I closed Hyperspace while I rebuild it from the ground up.

 

We're the only zone using ASSS that's still around. BZ died, GTA never lived, and ASSS test zone hardly counts.

Extreme Games is preparing to do a day trial in the next couple of months, maybe not even that. Was talking to Junky about it. So I think that will prove or break the chance of ASSS becoming the dominant server.

Yes, but if it can't handle a large zone, it will chase most newbs away from using it, and we all know who creates 90% of new zones.

I've done some consulting in the past with The Junky, and I've made it clear that ASSS will not yet support EG.

 

That said, I don't know why you think it'll make or break it. Most newbies don't get scared away from software that can't handle 100 players. They get scared away because it's ASSS.

 

ASSS is the most complicated peice of software in SS to install and configure. It's more complicated than MERV, TWCore and custom billing--combined.

 

Most newbie zone owners can barely get subgame itself running.

 

BUT, any newer zone that wants to be able to seriously compete in the next year will need to move to ASSS. There are some things that just cannot be done with bots.

Doesn't make sense to me. If it can't handle a large zone, it'll keep the large zones from using it, sure, but newbs last I checked don't think all that much - they use what people yell at them to use.

It can be made to support more users far more easily than subgame can be hacked to add all of the features

It's a given fact, most newbs copy their favorite zone. Think bout it, if EG or TW Announced they were going ASSS, then so would a lot of smaller zones just so they could say they use the same thing as them. But if they hear that EG and TW won't use it cause it can't support them, then it will make some people look less upon it, and turn away from it.

 

I'm not saying it'll make or break it, I'm just saying it will decide which will become to more dominant server software. The more dominant one will obviously get more support from client updates and other software.

If _anybody_ does something like that, I will personally !@#$%^&* them up.

 

Now, once again - ASSS will be the more dominant, because it has a great deal of potential and subgame has next to none.

It's fine with me if other zones don't use ASSS. It'll just take that much longer for them to catch up to me when I go back online.

Yes, but it would not be fine if Pointman and Zeus and those EG guys publically announced something like "!@#$%^&*S bites, so we're not going to use it after all". blum.gif

I'm a little confused. I've seen the !@#$%^&*ertion repeated that "!@#$%^&*s can't support large zones", but nobody's explained why. Perhaps it's not the easiest piece of software to configure although I could argue it's no harder than subgame, it's just that people are used to subgame). But that's not really a problem for larger zones, just small ones with limited staff and expertise.

 

I think the main reason large zones haven't adopted it is because they've invested a lot of time in their bots and their current serving infrastructure, and it would be too much effort to switch. That's a valid reason, although I should point out that recent releases include a "sgcompat" module that should allow most bots to work with no modification. If I'm wrong about the reason, though, I'd appreciate if someone actually told me, so that perhaps I could help address it.

Hmm, so it is just hearsay? Well that's a relief then. I was rather surprised at hearing it did not support larger zones - it might be ugly but it certainly seemed powerful enough.

 

ASSS needs a marketing team :D

ASSS is far too unrealistic to ever be implemented. It would take far too much effort to change something that does not need to be changed. The most I see coming out of ASSS is it being on dead zones for the rest of its existance. Why are we trying to fix something that isnt broken. There is no real need to completely trash the current server software and add in some "magical" ASSS software that will fix every known problem in ss. It wont. As far as I'm concerned the things ASSS does are not major enough to change my zone, or to convince any other zone for that matter to convert to ASSS. It is far too much work for a community basically run by very few compitent people in the first place. I'm not attacking the software, but I think people should probably stop wasting time with it.

Perhaps you've forgotten the lag coma bug? It's still around when you get about 35 players per arena.

 

This prevents larger zones from hosting big events. Also, some zones have their players per arena cap set higher than 35.
