Account Based Login

I've suggested this few times before during "the years",

but here we go again:

 

Change the SS login routine to "account based".

 

That's one account allowed to log in from one IP address.

 

And, the account owner gets to choose their alias after they've logged in.

 

 

I would prefer a system like what Battle.net uses.

 

You have one account that is tied to your registration key (in our case your IP and/or Machine ID).  You are then able to create say up to 5 aliases with that account.  With the master account in place, Mods are able to see all of your aliases and it makes banning people much easier to manage.  Doing this would also help integrate with the new features that are being built for MR.

Good suggestion. Very important for league settings and cheat prevention/punishment.

Dumb. An account shouldn't be allowed to only login via 1 IP address. You're forgetting, there are still people on dialup accounts which aren't static. Also, the fact that I can hop around campus onto different machines with different IPs could also occur.

Well, I would say suggestion 1 is out right away... what if I invite a frield over to play? He can't use his own alias then, if only my account is tied to my IP. And what if I am required to stick some silly behind my name for event hosting? And what if I want to host some bots from my own computer? And schools/campuses behind NAT would have many players with the same IP. And if I use my account from a friend's computer... the IP is different.

 

Suggestion 2 is sort of pointless. People could still have multiple master accounts (restricting to one is impossible, for example because of the reasons for why suggestion 1 was not good) and this would just add a layer of ambiguity to the user identification system.
