I use a gForce2 Mx 400 on a 17" vis HP M70 monitor. The maximum resolution i can use in subspace is 1280x1024. I wanna be able to use 1600x1200.

1600x1200 has worked before, but only during a mcafee security center crash. The display was flawless and the framerate was slightly decreased from 314 to about 280 average. Upon seeing this, i got greedy, exited and attempted 20x19 something resolution (21XXx19XX, whatever it is) and the game displayed as 1600x1200 with giant red box in the middle of the screen. 15 seconds later the monitor went into energysave and ever since i havnt been able to use 1600x1200 either.

My maximum desktop resolution with the most updated drivers from the nVidia website is 1280x1024. Ive attempted countless times to add 1600x1200 via the nVidia display properties, but each time it claims the resolution cannot be added. However it also does this when i attempt to add a simple resolution like 800x600 or 1024x786, which are already supported by my desktop.

I dont want to believe that my graphics card or monitor cant handle 1600x1200 since i used it for a good 10 minuites with no problem at all. Ive scoured the nVidia website but found nothing helpful as far as adding resolutions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a similar monitor (mx70).

Under Windows ME and with the old driver, it could handle 1600x1200 fine. Under Windows 2000 it could handle it quite a lot. In fact if I had stuck with it, I think I could've kept it at 1600x1200 forever...I prefer 1280x1024, though, so I only switched to 1600 sometimes to check things, and after maybe 25 switches my monitor decided not to let me use 1600x1200 anymore. blum.gif

Anyways, newer drivers don't let you get away with as much because they are _better_. Like my monitor, your monitor was not designed to handle 1600x1200 resolution.

You could undoubtedly find some program that can force the res for either your entire computer or just SubSpace, but it'll probably hurt you in the end.

As for the lower resolutions, I advise you to make sure you have not only the latest graphics card driver, but the latest monitor driver, too. HP's latest is for Windows 98 (and then 95), so it may just be time to get a new monitor (or monitor AND computer ).

You're 100% right on the monitor. Those specs are the exact model im sitting infront of right now. I tried to find specs for the gforce 2 mx 400 but no resolutions were listed and the original packaging is long gone. Even the drivers on the CD from the purchase are useless.

You did mention though that you were able to use 1600x1200 without much to cry about, so it seems the monitor should be able to play with it as long as you dont switch back and forth. I'd still like to try, worst case scenario, i get a new monitor and the problem is still solved. After 6 years its about time anyway

Since i use windows 98 i think i'll run through and install older drivers to see if i can find one that will support that resolution, but i dont expect to find anything usefull.

As for programs that force resolutions, as of now ive tried dcgenie and 12noon's Res Changer 2.x (wouldnt run the initial menu, so impossible to run the game), both of which did nothing but tie up about 1MB of disk space.

Anyone who knows of a program that works please share the wealth.

Thanks again.

That site's awesome.

I'll try it as soon as i reinstall my gforce (it quit on me yesterday, had to remove it from the pci bus).

Unfortuately i lose my internet soon so i'll have to field test it in subspace's old practice zone (should be fun its been a while) but look forward to owning hard from screens away when i get back blum.gif
