divine.216 Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 I originally wrote this as a reply in another thread, but seems more approriate in a new thread. Jesus Christ! Does anyone who uses MERV actually know how to program? So far all I see is people who keep tweaking code until it compiles. Does anyone know what they are doing? So -*BAD WORD*-ing sad...and annoying. Since mervbot seems to be used by non-coders to make bots, one of you who know how to program (are there any merv "devs" who do?) should write some kind of bot-wizard that would just generate "bots" (write one or two bots that are very very configurable and then an additional app that generates config's for them)... that would be a much better approach than trying to have people code who don't know the nature of application development (let alone your language of choice). Sorry to rip on merv coders, but it seems like many of them just hack up examples without really understanding them. I suspect alot of this is so that they can feel justified in calling themselves "bot devs" or some such. If you want to be helpful to your even less technically inclined peers, then write an app so they don't have to pretend. This would only really be useful for small utility-type bots -- but that's what most (all?) merv bots are used for anyways. Utility bots would take care of most of the completely programmatically disinclined (Joe Sysop who wants a bot for pub that says '-*BAD WORD*-o' and performs generic functions X, Y and Z). I haven't seen many really novel (read: creative and fun as opposed to useful and utilitarian) ideas from merv coders anyways.
»Dustpuppy Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 I have thought of this in the past: making a super-bot which has a huge ini of settings. But, to really make something useful would require an insane amount of configurability. And I felt that even after making the bot, people would constantly ask me to add more settings to do some tiny thing which they want.I think I've said in the past, if someone gives me a list of settings I might consider producing them. But I can't say that I think it will work... I haven't seen many really novel (read: creative and fun as opposed to useful and utilitarian) ideas from merv coders anyways. Gtfo What about my sig as an example?
ExplodyThingy Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 Lets see what i made for RWZ, shortlived as it was. "Winnable turf" with an adjustable arena based on population. The more people, the more map you can play in. Also freq sizes were changed based on the pop. Even the ammount of captureable flags changed.Cmon, that was quality. No, i dont consider myslef to be a real c coder, or even a "real" perl/html/you-get-the-drift writer. I used bots to learn, and now im better at what i do. We all are better after experience. Lets not rip on the merv people, most of them are like me and used MERV for practice. And such a master control program (a la Tron) seems impractable. So many control variables will just as easily confuse joe-schmoe sysop.
DeadlySoldier!! Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 All i can do is a little bit of bots, iw ouldnt be albe to make any program at all lol shame
videege Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 I don't know, some of the people who come here are probably more confused with mervbot's protocol than with the language. I know I was one. I have a fairly strong grip on C++ right now, and I write programs for a software company as a part time job. I think a lot of experienced programmers might look like noobs just because of the adjustment you have to make to merv.
Mr Ekted Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 90% of the questions asked here are by people who can't possibly know how to program. They are trying to modify C++ code without knowing C or C++. Anyone with even a couple classes under their belts should not be asking the questions I see.
divine.216 Posted September 9, 2003 Author Report Posted September 9, 2003 no matter how complicated/confusing the config would ever be for a sysop, it couldn't be more confusing than learning an entire discipline (programming). -*BAD WORD*-, most of the sysops are fairly used to complicated config's from using subgame anyways. It would be worth the time and would make the entire thing more usable -- you'd have a handful of coders who would work on updating the "core" (which would actually itself be a module) and a whole slew of technically disinclined sysops reporting back / making feature requests. Would be far more productive than the current hack-compile-repeat_until_errorless process. Again, it's easy for me to suggest this because I won't be doing it. But if you want to be useful instead of just known... Also, I wasn't ripping on merv coders; everyone starts somewhere, I was not making a character judgment as much as a tactical judgment.
Mr Ekted Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 How about a handful of clued personel making bots for the masses? Most of the requests are probably 5 minutes work for someone with MERV experience.
ExplodyThingy Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 Better yet start from scratch. I could easily turn my core (which is isnt really anything you havent seen before) into something like this. The only reason i see that people make merv plugins, is that merv is the only public bot that allows for modules or plugins. Java and powerbot (nudge) arent available. And Logic Bot isnt the most user friendly code ive ever seen.Worth a shot.
Dark Nexus Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 I used to know how to program, before the whole floppy drive "accident", but that is another story.....or something bad.....real bad.....
Dark Nexus Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 what kind of a freak are you?! some peoples kids....
DeadlySoldier!! Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 Ekted is some 40 year old man (something like that, im guessing? no offence ekted lol)
Dark Nexus Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 that's it, i'm never talking to my mom again.
CeinWyN MaN+ Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 rofl, how does kill.exe relate to this post? anyone can make a SIMPLE program, its as easy as pissing.

divine.216 Posted September 10, 2003 Author Report Posted September 10, 2003 This simple enough for you? http://home.planet.nl/~faase009/Ha_BF.html
CeinWyN MaN+ Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 not for me, might be simple for you tho
