why isn't there an "opensubspace.sourceforge.net" project going on?

Its possible to get a collaboration effort with experienced programmers contributing to creating a platform independant version of a subspace client and maybe even a new server software.

The only real concern with open source is cheat prevention, but there must be ways to create an anti-cheat module or some other solutions.

Perhaps even make the game in parts - single player client as open source then develope a multiplayer plug-in with a more secure code?

It seems quite unreasonable to me to read about all these talanted people slowly struggling to create their own clients when they can develope a single alternative much faster, especialy if it gets publicity on http://www.sourceforge.net and other people get involved.

Just a thought!

I think it's a good idea. smile.gif

It truly needs to be more than it is already, though - from the start.

CNL has a 3D environment that can also be 2D top-down, I think. It'd be choice if it could be either. The top-down would of course have to be like SubSpace in that there is only one plane.

For _serious_ showing off, it could also allow for an Infantry-style view. That'd be uber.

Hrmmm. I suppose just the SubSpace top-down and Infantry angled style would be enough. 3D would just be nice, though. blum.gif

Should make sure there'll never be problems with using "SubSpace", even with the prefix "open". For a more than just top-down client, though, I'd suggest a more broad name.

It's just a question of what you want to do.

Personally, I would make something that anybody could customize and run themselves. Something that could be 3D, Infantry-style or just plain SubSpace. That way you'd draw a big population.

Yes maybe so, but I think subspace was never meant to be 3D.

Obviously.

I find subspace funny and fun just because its 2D.

Of course.

Furthermore, you can't have both. It wouldn't be the same.

Of course you can, don't be ridiculous.

It wouldn't be the same, it wouldn't be the same fun.

You will get alot of 3D problems when having the screen in 2D. One obvious problem is that you have one axis less in 2D compared to 3D.

How are you going to stream 2D clients to 3D clients? That is not possible or very hard where you have to make alot of fixes which degrades the gameplay.

It is not doable.

Yeeesh. Your kind is part of why the human race takes so long to progress. Of course it's doable.

There are enough people out there at SourceForge that would REALLY LOVE playing a 2D version of Subspace on their BSD, Linux, and other OS.

The name has to be better then "opensubspace"

The game has to have plug-in capabilities - the first would be a module to connect to the current servers

In the same time superior server software can be developed along with another module, improved protocol and active anti-cheat protection.

(similar to punkbuster and that thing Gunbound has)

The new servers (or maybe the game itself) should have a restriction on resolution - limiting it to 1280-1024, to remove the requirement of having a large screen and limit the eye fatigue. This will allow people to compete on laptops and greatly expand population potential.

Subspace 3D is a completely different topic and you should not have derailed this thread for its discussion.

Fact - there are enough gamers and developers out there, especialy among Computer Science related people, who play games based on their gameplay and not their graphics. This is especialy true for people with alternative operating systems - you can often see them enjoy hours of emulator fun with 2D graphics from 1994.

They could double or tripple the current population of subspace if they get involved.

Another fact - one of the "project of the month" games on sourceforge is BZFlag, a CTF game with awful 3D graphics and mostly 2D gameplay.

What I noticed when trying BZFlag is that its much easier to control your tank using the 2D map (which i stretched to the max) and not the 1st person view. For the competative gamer its basically like subspace with worse graphics and boring 1-hit-kill settings.

If 'opensubspace' manages to be very low on resource demands, with improved protocol to reduce lag from/to europe and better thought out maps/structure it will easily become PotM itself and there will be a surge in population.

I was talking with sknox about this a few days ago (and The Ghost Ship a few days before that). All that needs to be worked on is a new protocol. Ekted and Priitk do not have the time, or in their words it is impratical. However, anyone with the time should be able to create a new protocol for a client and ASSS in about 6 months. That's not too impractical is it?

Physics and such are being worked on. A new protocol is not.

My suggestion: work out how to prevent cheating in an open source model of SubSpace. Do not limit yourself in thinking about the protocol, but limit yourself to SubSpace gameplay. Then go ahead and code an ASSS connection module & simple open source chat client for that protocol. Or better yet, make it a shared library. Do not expect any support from any SSC* people as they're pretty stuck up about open source.
