Greased_Lightning Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 I think this crisis really needs to be discussed on this forum. Give your opinions on the extent of US/UN involvment there should be (humanitarian, military, or both). And can we please not turn this into a Bush/Kerry topic? This is a serious thing that shouldn't be degraded by politics. I'll be the first to say I'd never heard of Darfur before this came up and still don't know much about the region or Sudan or much of the political structure on the African continent. I heard mention of the African Union (is that right?) during the... 'talking thing' last night. Anyone know any good resources to see about the situation? My opinion is that it's probably going to take a multinational force to stop this and that the US should be a part of it. Humanitarian aid is obviously needed but that's true of many African nations. Discuss
Aileron Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 My opinion is that multinational force should be used and US not be a part of it...the African Union needs to use this situation to show that it can handle problems on its own...otherwise countries won't respect it.
Bacchus Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 I'm really ill informed on sudan and the Darfour situation but i think that a multinational effort (i mean UN, therefore the USA are included) should be made to support the African Union own efforts. I doubt very much the AU can support a peace keeping military effort or that it can use political leverage on Sudan legates. But it can shows some alliances. Also, humanitarian aid conduit should be secured and prompt in responding to the situation. It shouldn't have to ask to many permissions or get lost in useless paperworks and petty arguments. Again, UN could hand out some of its own ressources to the AU, so that the latter have more chances at succeeding in bringing some more than needed relief. But i'll rerad more on the subjet and come back.
Aileron Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Well, that's my point...people don't think the AU can handle this on their own...which is precisely why they should. Other nations mayb should give token support, but they need to do the brunt of the work if the AU is to be respected in the future.
Bacchus Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 AU is a very young !@#$%^&*ociations, i think multinational support is of the essence. Anyone as interesting and concise links on Sudan and Darfur? [/lazy]
