Direction of Social Security

Today I listened to Pres. Bush strengthen his position on Social Security reform. Basically he would like to create some type of long term tax credit for generations younger than the baby boomers. This would mean that Social Security will essentially go away.

Personally I have mixed feelings because I don't know the complete agenda. If it means that I will lose most of the SS benefits that I have paid with my work, I find it to be outlandish. Most working people have some type of retirement fund in place called a 401k or IRA. Would the government assign more tax credit?

Undoubtably, we do need reform. I cannot understand how SS will make it through the next generation without a major increase in government taxation on individuals, but at the same time, I don't want to lose all that I have worked for.

Who said Bush was going to take down Social Security?

and earlier on that forum:

The agenda of the Bush Administration is becoming sadly and blatently obvious when it comes to domestic agenda. Republicans over the years have expressed anger at FDR's New Deal programs, the last two major vestiges of which are Social Security and Medicare. These programs are paid for by the government so that Americans can have some form of aid when they need it most (being elderly, being sick). Due to rising Health Care costs in both prescriptions and hospital bills (disclaimer: I am a biomedical engineer, I see this firsthand), many people even in the Middle Class need at least Medicare to assist them.

But back to that bit about the "government paying for these programs".

Guess what Bush has run up?

That's right, a record defecit based on military spending.

That is how the deficit bill will come due. When Medicare and Social Security are eliminated. And public education too, to be replaced by religious schools.

And we will be the ones to suffer.

I did ;)

I do so hate being right :

The only reason I appear to be a extreme liberal right now is Bush is -*BAD WORD*-ing up so much that I practically oppose everything he does, which makes me anti-neocon :p

When Kerry gets in invariably some stuff he'll do will be wrong too, and i'll be on the front lines -*BAD WORD*-ing about that, but right now I'm just an engineering student who doesn't want to be drafted to fight in Iran or Syria.

I wish I was making this -*BAD WORD*- up, but as this post proves, it's slowly all coming true, and even some Republican senators are bailing out on the Shrub :\

Nothing wrong with a little military service. Besides, you can only serve when you are young. After 35, you won't be qualified. As for college - you can do that your whole life.

But if you we're trying to claim that you guessed ss would be eliminated, you're far from being 'right'. It's a long known fact that ss wouldn't stand the test of time.
