Yupa Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 sounds good, i get more temted to go get linux each day.it's ridiculous how much better than Windows it is I mean basically what you use in Windows is just two applications in Linux: a file manager and a window manager...and believe me, the window managers available are far superior to Windows (which is pretty -*BAD WORD*- sad). I have as much screen space as I want. I can scroll my mouse say to the right edge of the screen...and keep on going to _another_ screen on the same desktop. I can go to a completely separate desktop. Another, another, another. Beating Windows at their own game is just the tip of the iceburg, though. Let's not forget you can get most Linux distributions for free...or FreeBSD, or NetBSD, OpenBSD, OpenDarwin. You can run a lot of the apps in Mac OS X if you want. For Gentoo GNU/Linux, you can find an application (or whatever) for just about any purpose just by typing "esearch keyword" and automagically download and compile (with options) just by typing "emerge packagename". They're all free. Let's say an application's source comes ready to work with the Gnome desktop environment or the K desktop environment, but _you_ use the XFCE desktop environment. You don't need the gnome or kde support, so just (the sloppy, but easier-to-illustrate-way) 'USE="-gnome -kde" emerge package' and you don't bother compiling what you don't want. I know I'm ranting, but it just owns.
