Jumbone Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 I just upgraded from my old Athlon 1400 system with WinME to a new a64 system with WinXP. I'm having trouble with subspace/continuum, it crashs my system. What happens is I'll be playing for a bit then all of a sudden my the screen goes black, my speakers hiss, and my system reboots. This doesn't happen every time, but it does happen often. Any idea what's causing this ? I haven't experienced this type of crash with any other games. Quote
Guest samhere Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 I have the same problemP4 2.4C 512MB RAMWinXP SP2Radeon 9800 PRO The game will freeze up and my machine will reboot. Only happens when I am playing subspace. Never had this happen on this machine for any of the other games I play. Thanks Quote
Guest samhere Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 oh yeah I have updated the latest Radeon drivers, latest MB BIOS, latest AGP and sound card drivers. I've ran scandisk, turned off all other running programs (including virus scanner) and I still crash. I've also tried to use the lowest video settings, run in 256 color mode, full screen, windowed, avoid page flipping, limit the frame rate, disable clipping, software emulation (various combinations of the above). Now I am getting some invalid password error and I've been locked out for a few hours from any of my computers behind my firewall. I can't create a new user or log into an existing user (I'm guessing until 4 hours as indicated in one of the forum postings b/c of a user security measure). Anyways, any other ideas about subspace crashing in game and causing my machine to reboot? Thanks Quote
»Maverick Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 A computer usually reboots while in a program if that program (or game) writes data to the memory or does requests to the processor that are not allowed. The computer reboots to minimize damage to the processor or memory. This can happen with graphics drivers, which try to do things to the graphics card that are not allowed. Its a hard problem to solve, best thing is to revert to the most current drivers you know that worked. Also check your device manager for any conflicts. -MMaverick Quote
Bargeld Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 A more general answer is simply that you have a "hardware" problem. It could be memory errors, could be resource sharing problmes, could even be a broken sound or video card. As far as a solution, try disabling things, like the sound card, and see if that helps... hopefully you can stumble onto the offending piece of hardware. Quote
Jumbone Posted August 23, 2004 Author Report Posted August 23, 2004 I don't think it's a memory or heat related issue. I've ran prime95 torture test for 6 hours with no errors. My temps don't get anywhere near high enough for a reboot. When this happens after windows reboots I get a message asking if I want to send an error report to Microsoft. The error code it lists is Bccode: 9c (then it lists a bunch of other weird numbers). I'm thinking it's maybe my Augidy2 Gamer card. .. Anyone know what Bccode: 9c means ? Quote
Jericho24. Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 What version of DirectX are you using? Quote

It might only occur when, f.ex subspace, sets a video mode which makes your graphics card do weird things and makes your computer reboot. So it might just be your Gamer card? What I suggest you do, is to put another graphics card into your computer, or remove your Gamer card (what is that anyway) and then see if you still have the problem. -MMaverick Quote
Jumbone Posted August 24, 2004 Author Report Posted August 24, 2004 Creative Augigy2 Gamer Sound card... really just an Audigy2 card. The package it came in had about 6 games included, so they call it a "Gamer" card. I am really thinking it is my sound card. I've been playing subspace with no sound. No crashes. Oh yea... using DX 9c Quote

Jumbone Posted August 24, 2004 Author Report Posted August 24, 2004 Creative Augigy2 Sound card. Gonna try my onboard sound once I get a chance to D/L the drivers and work on my PC. Quote
MasterDrake Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 nah its most likely your graphics card, I have almost the same set up, Windows XPAMD 64 3200+1.5Gig DDRAMATI RADEON 9800 PRO 256MBCreative Augidy 2 ZS Platium Gameretc etc My games were crash also but ati recently released a new driver becase doom 3 was cause problems it cleared everything up with any problems I was having before try that. Jumbone Posted August 25, 2004 Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 I changed over to my onboard sound and haven't had any errors. I found I also got the lock/squeel/crash error in FarCry Demo and once in Medieval Total war. Since I swited to onboard sound I haven't gotten this error. Sucks I can't use my Audigy2. I guess I'll have to try installing it into every PCI slot till I get one that works or something. MasterDrake, could you elaborate more on how it could be my video card ? I'm running a Radeon 9500 Pro (using the current/non-beta catalysts). Do you think my 9500pro could be conflicting with my audigy2 ? I don't see how. They had different IRQs. Quote

MikeTheNose Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 Try uninstalling the drivers for the card. Turn off the computer and take the card out. Turn computer on and let it boot as normally. Turn off after it's finished all it needs to process and put the card back in, you may try a different slot if you like. Reinstall drivers, disable onboard and run those games. If fail, check waranty. The Nose Knows. ------------- Have a good day. Quote
