Bak Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 It is rediculous when flagging isn't attractive anymore until someone finds all the flags when the JP is at 30k and flagging gets 300 seconds of fame. Flagging is probably the best part of hyperspace, and now that there aren't people who can buy hundreds of bricks and shields to keep you out, it should be thriving, not submitting to the rocket and repel war that is balling. Quote
Kilo Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Well, it's generally noted that balling is generally a bit more unbalanced in terms of rewards. As I said in a topic in HS-dev, manipulating the formula to be something like inverse-quadratic might be beneficial to fix this problem. However, now that there aren't people who can buy hundreds and bricks of shields, people will be trying even harder to earn that money, most likely. As for your note about basing the ball...people shouldn't be forced to play the flag game just because some frequency puts the ball in their base. To me, it makes the game tons less fun, and many people (especially now) are unable to retrieve a ball that is based, against any substantial opponent anyway. In my opinion, then, fixing goal rewards is probably the best way to go, possibly make FlagReward higher to encourage more flagging with huge populations. Quote

Dav Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 i thbink (if it can be done) a $500 minimum reward nshoulf be set to make balling attractive wjhn the pop is too low to play any fkag games, it will prevent people leaving tro allow pop to rise. Quote
Bomook Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 I agree, the balling formula is way off of what it should be. Unfortunately, with settings, the ball formula either must be a fixed number, or quadratic like it is now (even a linear curve would be better than the current one ). This is a problem though; with low populations, scoring is not even worth the effort, and the population plummets after a decent flag game ends. And because of the low population, no one else joins. Ahhh what a vicious cycle . With high populations, the goals can be as much as $5K each, making it many times more productive than flagging. Flagging should be the main thing to do in hyperspace, with scoring meant for newbies, or as a second-rate source of income. Though this aspect doesn't directly affect population, it is a very cheap way of making a lot of money very quickly. Quote
NinjaMantis Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Holy hejudas, Dav... you managed to go 4 pages with minimal typoes in a conversation with Funk, and now this? Is this some sort of compensation for typing well? Quote
Bak Posted July 22, 2004 Author Report Posted July 22, 2004 Balling just makes money faster than flagging. Maybe turn off ball on radar, so that it takes longer to score a goal, but is still just as easy for newbies to score as anyone else. Or have the flags be randomly distributed in the entire map, and have there be an initial jackpot based on the population. so after a 100k flag game the jackpot goes to like 20k and the flagging freq already has a base so they might as well keep flagging. And they can't win too fast cause all the flags are all over the map. Quote
Kilo Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 There are problems with changing the ball reward formula.Well, I didn't know if it was possible. Bak: Your idea for spreading the flags out is intriguing. Also, taking the ball off the radar would make it harder to score a goal, but if you have to search the entire map for it, then it's probably not going to be worth even having a ball. Quote
NinjaMantis Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Currently, only the most patient of people with a lot of time bother searching for flags that are spread out or hidden. If the ball is removed from radar, then few people would ever score, and as Arnk says, we might as well not have a ball.Or, the "elites" will do as they do for flags and send out their freq in search parties, thus only allowing them to score and making your idea highly counter-productive. Bak Posted July 22, 2004 Author Report Posted July 22, 2004 Solution: when the balls spawns the pub freqs are told what section it's in. Quote
NinjaMantis Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Counter: "elites" will make their own pub freq, and then continue to own goals. Quote

BlueC Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Money's fine, basing ball is bad. Recapping suggestions: No priv. Freq, better yet, No Vets allowed. Decrease ball time. Wider ball pick-up (goalie) Decrease prox. Quote
chocko_cc Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Or somehow get it so people over a certain point limit cannot ball. Quote
