Darksonic Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 Hey I installed Cont, but when I run it, it just wont load. I'm on WinXP, I've tried with 0.38 client and 0.39 but it just doesnt work with anything. I have tried reinstalling, deleting registry entries, everything but it just wont load at the beggining. It's like it loads and loads over and over but never show the splash screen. Hope anyone can help
50% Packetloss Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 Continuum works fine on XP, so there is probably something else wrong. Go to www.windowsupdate.com and make sure that you update your system. Its unusual taht a program wont start at all
Darksonic Posted July 22, 2004 Author Report Posted July 22, 2004 I have all the updates, it still doesn't work. This is very strange <_<
Nurples Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 Is continuum loading at all? Is the main screen comming up and you simply cannot connect to a zone? We need a few more details of what is happening. You say the splash screen doesn't even come up, are you saying that the "Continuum" banner doesn't show or that the "fly-by with the stars" splash screen isn't working? Also, when you try deleting the program and reg entries, did you physicaly go into the continuum folder and delete the program files? You may want to try that also. When you run the uninstall program, continuum is not fully uninstalled.
Guest keg Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 I have the same problem. running xp pro. have the latest direct x, latest vid card drivers... my system is literally a week old. there is no issue on this computer running anything else. any ideas?

Bargeld Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Short lesson here: Servers should never be used as workstations. When you run a server for anything, you set up a machine to do it, start it up, then walk away and never touch it again. The reasoning behind this:When you run different applications, and start and stop them, you change the configurations of the computer, no matter how miniscule. To the smallest degree, you need to cache memory or files to the hard drive, and the hard drive's data storage changes. The more stuff you run, the more you change your computer. Web browsers are notorius fiends, especially because of their integration with the operating system in a windows environment (explorer and internet explorer are basically the same thing.) What it boils down to is this: Computers don't change themselves, they react to user input. If continuum worked 2 weeks ago, and now it doesn't, then you changed something during that time. You can swear up and down that you didn't... but that's the same thing as swearing that you will never find the solution. Find what changed, fix it, and you will be straight.
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 been there, done that, got the t shirt, no i havent installed ANYTHING, drivers, browsers, games, programs, any hardware or any software absolutely nothing ive allready done a system restore to my last good config with continuum and nothing, and please do not patronise me with this useless information, ive used a program to remove all traces of continuum from the registry, and reinstalled it again ive got a shareware system monitor which sees software conflicts, and nothing, more info:if i try and load it and log off or shutdown etc a dialog window comes up with DLL initialisation failed!"the application cannot start because the window station is shutting down" then whats even stranger if i start up continuum again it worx however when i close it and open it again for the second time it doesnt load... nowtell me whats what cuz i dont have a clue i can still play continuum on my other hard drive however...
Bargeld Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 The message about dll failed because the workstation is shutting down makes sense, especially when you say that you start continuum, then shut down the computer. if i try and load it and log off or shutdown etc a dialog window comes up with DLL initialisation failed!"the application cannot start because the window station is shutting down"And the load once and wont load the second time.... I bet you can hit cntrl alt del and see the process still running... which prevents a second instance of it from working. You can swear up and down that you didn't... but that's the same thing as swearing that you will never find the solution. Find what changed, fix it, and you will be straight.Obviously you haven't been there, or done that.
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 ffs, ok i open continuum.exe, ok it doesnt loadthen i log off i recieve error message i log back in on same account and when i open continuum.exeit works, then if i close it and reopen it it doesnt work, mmm kay
Bargeld Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 ok It's because the "first" time you try to run it... it was already running. You can see it in task manager. So you log off, it stops the process of loading it. In task manager (when you log back on) it will not be listed. Therefore when you run it the "second" time it works because logging out stopped the process. And I use "first" and "second" because the application was already running when you started your motions. They are actually the "second" and "third." BUT this proves that it's not loading. So lets go from there.
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 yer when i see it in task manger under processes its jumping up and down the listi cant end the task, cuz continuum.exe is going up and down the list when i do it real fast i get an error message saying "this action is not valid fot the process" or something to that effect
Bargeld Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 use the arrow keys to select it, then press the "end task" button.
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 no u see u dont understand when i do manage to actually click end process when i do it fast i get that error message. and i besides ending the task will not help me play will it? im going to sleep 00:54 here... g'nite y'all
Guest Derelan Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 If you look at the task manager, you will see that Continuum is constantly trying to shut itself down and restart itself. Thus you get the error when you log off your computer because it can't restart itself. This is also why you can't close it with the task manager, you either have to reboot or rename the file.
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 tryed it, i reboot practically every day ive deleted all traces of continuum and reinstalled it....nothing continuum.exe just goes up and down the list
Samapico Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 hmm... maybe i'm wrong, but I think you can sort the processes by name/CPU usage/other things if you click on the column's !@#$%^&*le... if you sort them by name, continuum should stop jumping up and down the list, therefore making it easier to end the task? I'm not sure if you can do that with your OS tho.. I'm on a win2000 system at the moment... But.. is it jumping up and down the list or disappearing and reappearing in the list?? ...
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 disappearing and reappearing but sometimes both so the program is trying torestart itselfpfft i dunno
DJ muppetmaster Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 yes bargeld i have tro ctrl alt del each time my comp starts up because i have three firewalls on and they all want to start up, i use em all tho when i uselimewire etc, so stfu Know it all which u dont
Samapico Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 maybe... desactivate those firewalls instead of shutting them down with ctrl+alt+tab? ... ending a task is never the best way to shut down a program
Guest Derelan Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 AHEM, as i said, if you had read my post, YOU CANNOT end the continuum.exe task when it does this! It is shutting itself down and restarting itself! The only way to interrupt it is to rename the file! Sheesh.
Samapico Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 i have tro ctrl alt del each time my comp starts up because i have three firewalls on and they all want to start upmaybe... desactivate those firewalls instead of shutting them down with ctrl+alt+tab? not talking about ending continuum.exe task...
