Gravitron Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Dr Brain: Obscene.txt is not an option Sadly, however, re-*BAD WORD*-ecy obviously is. Quote
Dr Brain Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 You obvisouly had my detailed and well thought out arguments that supported that point go sailing over your head. Alas, it is my fate to be misunderstood by re-*BAD WORD*-s. Quote
Gravitron Posted May 15, 2004 Author Report Posted May 15, 2004 I still will never grasp the concept of banning someone because of what they say when the game has 2 FOOL proof methods to not have these comments affect your gaming experience. 1) Block Obscinities. 2) ?ignore . I fear the staff has lost focus of what this game is for and the place where games should reside in people's lives. Quote
NinjaMantis Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 Have you people ever thought of growing up, perchance? There's no physical item forcing you to type out curses! In fact, when people swear in real life, the tendency is for it to be in a fit of pure rage. Now, saying a word like s**t is very easy. Typing it is an entirely different story, and should be too much effort for people to type when they're pissed off.Besides that, there's still no point to swearing in an online game. Quote
Animate Dreams Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 I wouldn't call it fool proof either. There's lots of ways around obscenity.txt, and people do it all the time. Besides, the fact that if you don't want to see it, you don't get to see what everyone says is annoying. Put yourself in Brain's positon: He doesn't want to see the words. So, he puts his blocker on. Now, someone says something else illegal, something racist or something, and they used a word in the Obscenity.txt, and Brain doesn't get it. Now, he can't prove someone did it, and he doesn't want to do it without proof, so he gets away. It's reasons like that why staff can't have blockers on, not and expect to be very effective in similar cases. And if the staff are the people that don't want to see it, they'll just ban you, so there's no conflictions. Or at least I would. Quote

Obcene.txt is optional to the end user as is ?ignore. As the older and (supposedly) more respocable playes of SS we need to maintain the integraty of chat so it is sutable for younder players. Ig a parent sees F*** this F*** that you F***ing B**** etc they will ban their kids playing it because some immature peropn like you has to swear before they can press enter. Quote
Gravitron Posted May 15, 2004 Author Report Posted May 15, 2004 G'ah, stupid laggy thing made me double post. Read below. Quote
Dav Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 Obscene.txt can be forced if zone owner chooses to. Since originally it's user optional and client side (and you get to say which words go in it and which do not), no one feels compelled to byp!@#$%^&* the filter, since those who swear ussually aren't aware of them being censored. In 8 years I've never heard of some kid getting in trouble with his parents over his SS chat. If everyone who do not wish to see "naughty words", will not see "naughty words" then there's nothing to even argue about, if no one is being crimed against, what does it matter if the mods see someone typing a racial or not, if there was no one to be offended by it in first place. No victim = no crime, law 101. Zone owner or not, why should the rest of us be punished because pinky here, err I mean Brain, is a little child who's scared of "naughty words"?If he doesn't wish to see it, he has a choice to make use of said functions. And besides, I'm sure everyone else who are toughskinned and mentaly hardened enough and do not use it, will make sure to run right away with screenies and log and report a racist offender (and there is always plenty of those colaborators in stock). People who think like the PTA have no buissness playing games, hosting games, wathcing games, whatever that has any relevance to do with games.Game world < -------------------------------------------------- > PTA.Stay at your corner, and we won't have to start WW3, and trust me, gamers are going to win (after all, we're violent enough, nope? <_<).but parents may not want kids to see naughty words, frankly "naughty words" are unsutable for 12 year old kids to see anyway. Swearing has nothing with immaturity, it's about habbits of venting and mundane language use. Whatever convention you have about typing taking some divine effort and not being instantenous reaction like speaking, is mistaken to the bone. Kids today swear more than me. Kids today know about using computers, game clients and what not with general rapid orientation with their envrionment more than I ever been. Your underestimitation of kids, and the !@#$%^&*umption that there are many kids even to begin with, and that they're incapable of protecting themselves and swears being so alien to them, makes me think you landed from the moon or walked out of a cave. Quigybobo Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 Gravitron, I will let you know this now. Do not get into an arguement with Dr brain, because you will not win. Just give up now and save your self the effort of thinking. Something that I doubt your to good at. Quote
Dr Brain Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 In 8 years I've never heard of some kid getting in trouble with his parents over his SS chat. You don't pay attention then. Regardless, weeding out the swearing prone has other benefits. It raises the average intelligence of the zone population. You, already on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of intelligence, would naturally resist this sort of trend. The use of a computer to censor words doesn't work. Filters can be cir-*BAD WORD*-vented, and removing data from the chat isn't a good idea. It introduces unreliability into the system. ?ignore isn't an option either. People don't want to spend all their time in a zone figuring out who to ignore. Maybe that's how you get your kicks, but normal people like to actually play the zone. So, I have the moderators warn first time offenders, fine repeat offenders, and ban trouble makers. All in all, it creates a friendly atmosphere after the weeds have been pulled. Eventually, this whole thing boils down to private property laws. In essence, Hyperspace is my private property. I don't want people swearing on my property. If you don't like that, you can go somewhere else. If you can deal with it, great, we'd love you have you here. I'm not forcing you to do anything. But if you want to play in MY zone, you will have to obey the rules. Oh, and take quigy's advice, he knows what he's talking about. Quote
Gravitron Posted May 16, 2004 Author Report Posted May 16, 2004 All in all, you're nothing but a lousy trash talker yourself, can't run with the big wolves, can't stay at the bottom of the barrel, so you try to create your own level like the common rookie. With a few some of those words, you've just managed to both make me understand how vocous and obtuse you are and turn it onto a personal issue as well. Too bad invision is so amatuerish, it doesn't even has an ignore feature. With that, I'm ending any further discussion I have on the matter. Quote
Dav Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 I agree that Strong language should be avoided, Obsene.txt shouldnt have to be used. As long as its doesnt get ridiculas like -*BAD WORD*- or -*BAD WORD*- getting a fine im 100% with you Brian. Quote
nikegurl637 Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 Heh. I always let "-*BAD WORD*-", "-*BAD WORD*-", "-*BAD WORD*-" and "gay" slide. Quote

FireFox13 Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 I completely agree with brain on this one, and what's wrong with the word "gay"? Last I knew it wasn't a cuss word, it's just a word saying that you're happy. Quote
NinjaMantis Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 The word gay is like the word -*BAD WORD*-. Some people find it offensive, even if it's being used to mean "happy as a schoolgirl". Quote
Dav Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 depend how the word gay is used if somone says thats gay or just gay its fine but if your gay is used its diffrent. Quote
