opal is a good map, it could work as a pub map i think, but the bases are noticeably larger from what we ahve now, so we need a higher average pop playing pub before opal can become a good pub map. it'd be no fun in a 8v8 game.

 

and if your suggestions are so great akai make some maps and send them to vile/nbv/net because they at least usually give some feedback. and if you already did, send them again.

 

and the "uzi weasel" shouldnt come back. it was entertaining, yeah, but it pissed people off too (usually the javs :wink: )

why should league sets get put into pub? why not pub sets into leagues? i know that'd piss off rumblers, but i imagine alot of pubbers will feel the same about having rumble jav + the sets required to balance it put into pub.

Well if you want to speak technically akai, besides Mike, I've been on staff longer than anyone else. Now Jim was there before me and has been off and on staff, so theres an exception. And Vile was hired just after me I believe, it's hard to remember as it's been over 3 years now. So if I don't have the right to make comments about peeps complaining, what only mike and jim do?

Well Akai what you talk off are minor map changes and we all know that any sort of change no matter how you think it might benefit the zone will annoy people. I want to see north base gone.. in fact the new map i've made does almost exactly what you've said but with new bases entirely. Its just that unless the rest of the map is changed aswell there is no point in doing it if it will just annoy people.

 

The old sets have been tried and were even put back up at one point and have never caused an influx of new pubbers. I do agree that some of the old ships like the jav, terr and lanc were alot better than the current pub ships but the old sets never worked because of ships like the weasel, spider and warbird. Something i've made atm uses the best of the old and makes it more playable. My map and sets should be up in 17thpub2 so check them out.

there is nothign *WRONG* With the current public jav (or whatever we should call it now since it's maneuvering got changed to rumble jav's), except that it's not the rumble jav. now some of you may say "OH MY GOD THAT'S A SERIOUS PROBLEM!" but that's a bit... childish i think. the only reason why people aren't using javs is because... well i dont know. seems to me that people just like to whine about settings (while i am said to enjoy aubsing mod powers) and long for the good ol' days of 20 people in the zone overall (while i prefer to think of the future when we'll have 100 regularly if all goes well)

I was just using it as an example - the current map with just north base removed and turf flags added west/east would be just as good

if vile does anything good these days then it's obviously not allowed by Nurps or Mike because last I checked he felt the same as I do (opalmap-like map with old sets and uzi weasel)

it was much less "annoying" than the old one hit kill weasel and it was plenty fair

 

if you don't want to piss anyone off then you'll have to make every ship the exact same thing (which by the way is exactly what has been happening - 17th used to have very unique ships)

most people like JWL (when it's randomly hosted, not teh actual league games) with 6 teams of 4 instead of 4 teams of 3.

most people like blitz when there's 10 people, not 4

most people like pub when there's 30 people playing, not 10.

 

 

sometimes we have enough for having the really good killer events, but more often than not we are stuck with small games in arenas that are alot more fun with more people.

 

the trick is getting people to come to the zone and stay, so that when things get hosted we have more people in teh zone to go play the events that get hosted. sbl and sbljav would get hosted alot less often if we had 16 people who wanted to play events instead of 8 all the time.

 

the key to getting people to STAY in the zone IS public, as the only people who stay in the zone and stay in spec are people who are hanging around for events to happen. new players aren't likely to do that. if you dont care about getting new players, you're basically saying you prefer small scale battles. and if you like that, go to the svs leagues, you'll be happier in the long run.

as I said before - there were always enough people, pub used to have plenty of players and even during the really bad times (after the lame tweaking started) there were 30 people a day

 

so no, I don't necessarily prefer small scale battles - you seem to think the svs leagues are rather low on population...if so you are sorely mistaken

 

furthermore I am not looking for a zone to play in - it'd just be nice to see 17th restored to its former glory

ppub does get 30 people a day playing now, but that's at peak times. im talking more about offpeak times then, and that's were MORE PEOPLE come into the equation, because more people = higher population at offpeak times (generally).

 

svs leagues (Except the czl and other chaotic ones) are set up to be 4v4 or less. i play in the svs leagues, i know they aren't low in population

 

my point, which you missed judging by your reply, is this: the current settings have gotten us more population into the zone, and then they are staying more (whether that's due to events or their continued playing of pub isn't possible to find out i think). something has been done right. blame zeke, hate zeke, love zeke, kill zeke, HE DID SOMETHING THE OLD SETS NEVER DID FOR YEARS AND YEARS: make the zone grow.

I have had no aliases at all, and was infact away due to personal issues for some months last year, but the point is you made a frivilous remark about something you assume to be correct. I've seen the -*BAD WORD*- zone grow from having 8 peeps on a good day, to what it is now. I ran around other zones trying to get peeps to the 17th. For one, I am ALWAYS in the zone (as long as I am not deployed with the army). I always answer EVERYONE that talks to me as long as I am not AFK.

 

I will always look at new ideas, but all I normally get is COMPLAINTS with NO SOLUTIONS. As in solutions, I mean something better. People always have a way that will seem to fix the problem that is in their eyes.

 

Someone said we have killed the zone... Well, maybe someone needs to look back when the zone was Dead... When I took over SysOp there were only about 20-30 people in the zone at Peak Times. We went through a few map changes (which came from players and staff), some were good some were bad. Then we went through setting changes to adjust to the map we finally setteled with. Now we have in pub what we have. The pop is up in the 60's during Peak Hours.

 

So for those of you that say that we just killed the zone, you are the one killing it for yourself. Population of the zone is on the rise and you are just making the zone look bad.

Well you're not in there now.. but my comment was exagerated.

 

Its just the map thats in pub was the same one every veteran and even many ex-noobs got bored with a long time ago. It doesn't suit the gameplay because of the north base being there and the small soccer bases. The settings aren't compatible with the league ship which is what drags in people from all the other zones to play here. The settings are not easily used in leagues because there are too many cloakers and they are not balanced with the league jav.

 

Those are the problems as i see them.

 

My solution is in 17thpub2 atm. There might be some more minor changes to whats in there but thats 90% of what i feel will work better for us.

I'm complaining because I think that the pub settings changes were totally unnecessary.

I'm not complaining because the zone lost its "population", as in, woo how popular we äre, but because I lost löts öf contacts because of the changes.

 

Nurples isn't even involved in the community : He never really was.

So he doesn't (and never did) know what the majority of us wanted.

 

I remember when we complained in the old forum about the shark change, (first change I can remember) when he changed it so that using cloak and stealth drained energy.

He didn't even reply to the topic :/ I remember that madhaha read the thread and had to ask him personally.

And he replied "I changed that a long time ago, those people in the forum are nutts".

 

If he cared about the zone, he'd atleast be involved with the community :/
