chocko_cc Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Ah yes asians parents are really tight. Quote
FunkmastaD Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 being asian, or for that matter being any race shouldn't directly affect -*BAD WORD*- all....We all deal with similar problems, so stop -*BAD WORD*-ing complaining....Life could be 10000000x worse than it is for you all. Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Hey I'm not complaining, Nike is so direct it at her... Quote
nikegurl637 Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Warning: Major rant below. Actually, being Asian really does affect a lot. Ask bomook. >_>Maybe where you guys are the asians are more americanized, but where I live... asians make up % of the school, and they're nerdy >_> "I'm going to MIT or Caltech" type of asians. Anyway, there's so many of them that they set the standard higher than ever.If you don't get a perfect 1600 on your SATs, you're a "dumb!@#$%^&*", and if you don't get straight A's there's "something wrong with you", and if you're up at 3am, your parents hover around your caffeine-drugged body, lecturing you on how in (native country here) they worked much harder than you, and got whipped for not being perfect! <_< People here are so sheltered and closeminded. I wish they'd get out of this place, be more cultured, and realize that there's more to life than doing homework. I wish they'd realize what the real US standards are, and how not getting into an Ivy league or a Tech school doesn't ruin your life forever. Argh. I wish they'd see that crying over getting a -*BAD WORD*-ing A- doesn't mean -*BAD WORD*-. I wish they'd see how other people in the world live, and how life could be so_much_worse but no. They get depressed over grades. Big deal. ARGH. It sucks. Where I live, people are messed up in the head. Which is why I'm working so hard towards college, so I can get the -*BAD WORD*- out of asian nerdland. Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Yes asians do have a tendancy to be stereotyped as being smart, especially in maths, but i stereotype asians having that funny accent they couldn't get over. Since I don't have a funny accent, I laugh at them. Anyways, how can a bunch of nerds demoralise you? What in the -*BAD WORD*- is wrong with a B? What in the -*BAD WORD*-... is with american asians.... Quote

nikegurl637 Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 FFS, it's nothing wrong with me, it's what's wrong with the general population here right now. And I'm not being racist, it's the bloody truth. Nobody elsewhere believes it, until they come here. Quote
Dr Brain Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 And I'm not being racist, it's the bloody truth.Of course not. I was joking. Racial stereotyping isn't racism. Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Yes, but it tends to get annoying. Quote
Bomook Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 lol actually nike's rant is true for most asians . yes, it is stereotyping, but that doesn't make it any less true. the fact is that most asian cultures are centered around education and hard work. So after coming here, the second and third generations are almost all pushed to the extent nike said. For AP classes, my parents are like "WTF! YOUR GPA IS TERRIBLE!! WHAT ARE THESE 2 B's DOING HERE?!" or "OMG!! YOU NEED TO GET HIGHER THAN THAT TERRIBLE 1440 TO GET INTO A DECENT COLLEGE!!" , so yeah, I guess I still am pretty lucky . Quote
nikegurl637 Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 Yeah, I'm glad I'm not a chinese acrobat. They starve those little girls so they can fit through and some of those tubes and rings. And they beat them. >_> Quote
Wargh!!! Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 Well, in the ways of schooling grades, and parental rant/lectures... I guess im the luckiest of the bunch.  My graphics report comment: "Sam doesn't like graphics. He made this clear by doing no work at all. What work he did do, he did to a standard which proves his poetential."  All i got was (Actual speech follows)Mom: Hey Sam, i've been looking at your graphics report, and im not too happy with it eh.Me: Well, i never did like graphics, and you'll notice thats the only one where i didn't do work...Mom: You social studies one wasn't too flash either, "Could do more work"Me: If the teacher knew how to control a class, she'd have more work out of me.Mom: Thats no excuse to slack, Sam. I know you've been cruising through your school life, but now its time to make some use of yourself and that great mind of yours and do some real commited work.Me: Ok.Mom: me: That went on for 10 minutes. Wow, i've got it as good as it gets >_>Either that, or my mom wasn't really in the mood for a fight Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 No offense, but I kinda laugh at Nike and Bomook, my parents looked at the C+ on my report and went "C+?!?!??! Oh well", shrugged and laughed it off, also with the comments. However in other situations.... Quote
»D1st0rt Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 A chinese friend's father was mad at him because he got a 1590 on the PSAT. "What is this?! You missed one!" Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Asians... smart... my school? Today was -*BAD WORD*-! I don't prounce in with the heavy groups at school, but i am aware its now asians vs. whites at our school now in the yr 9 and 10's, someone graffittied a racist slogan where the asians stand, and today a person i knew chased the guy who did it around with a trolley pole until he hid inside the general office... -*BAD WORD*-. Luckily, I have my own friends who aren't in that scene, thank god. But god knows what will happen next.... Quote
Power_P Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Wow parents pushing you to do good in school? That sounds like a mojority of parents to me. No asians dont have it harder. I dont care what you say. Youre just more scared of them is all. Ever tried not getting an A or B and then stand up to them? Yeah thats what I thought. Youre scared. Parents want you to succeed in life, they dont want you to have the same life they had growing up. They now probably have good jobs and they wish you would have a good one too when you grow up. For several reasons actually, one being that all the money you will earn will send them away for some expensive-sunny vacations when theyve past the age of eating with a fork. If you do keep doing what they want its either because you actually want that life where your job is destined by how much money it makes and not because you like what you do OR because youre a teen , scared of grown ups, scared to stand up and tell them youre going to take it at your own rhytm and do what you like.  God you kids are getting dumber by the second ... I swear. Ps : Asians are no where near smarter than the average joe. I just watched an Asian look for his copy of his paper he just printed out. It was right there, underneath the machine and I told him it was...he nodded and press the -*BAD WORD*-ing copy button AGAIN. Stupid I know asians , 60% of my clients are asians. Theyre dumb most of the time. Quote
FunkmastaD Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 I agree with PPBeing asian or not doesn't have any bearing on how smart you are, or how hard you are pushed, only on how much you push back I dropped everything to switch my major and my parents complained, so I told them that this is my decision and that it won't be changed.Eventually they supported it My mom continually pushes job search papers into my face from jobs that will make me more money but is just -*BAD WORD*- work...I say no these jobs are not what I want go awayAs long as you put in some effort you can do what you want with your life.Stop being -*BAD WORD*-s Quote
Bomook Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 I never said all asians are naturally smarter than anyone else. I said that in general, asians are pushed harder than most other people. Culture inevitably has an effect on parental at!@#$%^&*udes, among other things. Most asian cultures put the biggest emphasis on education and hard work. As a result, that's why the US government gives asians no minority amenities despite the fact that they receive less than 2% of the representation in Congress. Denying differences due to ethnicity and culture is narrow-mindedness and naivete. Such differences are why companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on people familiar with other cultures and how socio-cultural psychology exists. Quote
nikegurl637 Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 I'm sorry I brought this whole thing up. You will continue to not understand unless you go to a crazy asian school, and there's not really a way for us to have you relate to us. I never said that asians were smarter, but like Mook said, education has such a huge emphasis in asian culture. Other cultures tend to also put a lot of emphasis on sports or the like, but most asians nowadays couldn't care less if their child was a weak little thing with the palest skin ever from never going out in the sun. Just sitting at home and studying constantly, or practicing music. Heh, in fact, if you're asian, adults consider having a tan a really bad thing. Which is why formally in asian, in many plays and occasions, people paint their face white. Bleh. And as for calling us pussies. You really have no right to, as you merely !@#$%^&*umed that we never stand up to parents. I've rebelled so much that my mother actually lets me go out on weekends, and doesn't mind a few B's here and there. It really is a different culture, and you guys cannot claim to be an expert swordsman by merely touching the sword. You guys have probably just touched apon the surface. Now let's drop this topic. You all can clearly not relate, and us trying to explain is like trying to walk through a wall. And Mook and I can really not let go of our arguments either. Let's drop it. Quote

nikegurl637 Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 So how's the weather? We had an earthquake last night at 3:30 am. I slept right through it, even though the house was shaking fit to break. Hehe. And -*BAD WORD*-, heat wave in Cali. Quote
chocko_cc Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Today the sky was covered with the clouds it rained heavily for about 5 minutes then the clouds disappeared and instantly crystal blue skies appeared and it was sunny... no joke >.< Quote
