Xeterax Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 Is it legal to copy another setting by manually creating them yourselves? Manually as in figuring out the settings for every ship/weapon/bomb etc. Just asking out of curiosity. Would I get in trouble?
Paxil Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 I doubt your trying to copying someone elses. Or are you o_O [edit]
»SD>Big Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe he wants the pyro setts from GW, neva!! but you can keep our tank
Dav Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 well your best bet is to make a few small diffrences. Do that and no one can accuse you of copying them.
Tascar Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 Oh, they can accuse.... how far they get with their accusations is a different story....probably no where.
Xeterax Posted March 16, 2004 Author Report Posted March 16, 2004 Umm.. I copied a zone's first two ships. They're exactly the same .. and, it took me 2 hours to figure the settings out. I'm using a desktop + laptop while working on copying. -*BAD WORD*-, I got some testers to test it.. it moves and feels the same o_o. Note: If anyone would like to see, goto KA | Development and PM me a couple of times. I'll be waiting.
Himura Kenshin Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 lol kame what zone is that from? i liek them
Xeterax Posted March 16, 2004 Author Report Posted March 16, 2004 It's in a private arena, you haven't tested it yet
Paky Dude Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 No, its not "COPYING". You are making them right? If no, then you won't be accused of copying any setts. MM did the same thing. He copied a TW and made it into 3D.
Paky Dude Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 LoL, whoopz I mean to say "If Yes". Not "If no"
Dav Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 the problem is that if they are exactly the same you have a hard time proving you didnt copy them, diffranced make it diffrent and therefore not at all copied.
Mr Ekted Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 SSC has a policy of not allowing similar zones to prevent this very thing. It's not formalized or even consistently enforced, but it has been invoked in the past.
Tascar Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 The world is full of copiers. Why not do something original with your spare time?
Xeterax Posted March 17, 2004 Author Report Posted March 17, 2004 Well, we'll see if the zone I'm copying gets mad or not. I'll probably just add a few graphics/sound to change the whole ordeal.
Xeterax Posted March 17, 2004 Author Report Posted March 17, 2004 Umm. I'll show you guys later when I'm finished. Here's how I manually copy the settings: I use two computers both running two continuums at two different resolutions. I'll tell you guys the technique later on how to copy settings from another zone (it's really easy, only a few steps and you'll be able to copy them). But, it takes me at a maximum of an hour to figure out a ship. If you have any questions about this, post something.
attackmonkeys Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 u must reallllly like that zones settings if u go through all that to copy a ship's sets
Xeterax Posted March 17, 2004 Author Report Posted March 17, 2004 Not really, I'm doing this for a test so I can copy other big zones in the future
Tascar Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 what would be the point? big zones are big zones because new players flock to them...not that they have anything good - well, ok, MG breaks that cliche...but still. Imagine if someone just now developed EG or TW. It would have like 10-15 people playing it and something like DSB and Chaos would rule the community??
Xeterax Posted March 17, 2004 Author Report Posted March 17, 2004 If the zone has the basic requirements of a good zone (settings, gameplay, etc), then people will play them. I've been making zones for quite a while now and I already know that settings make up huge percentage of a good zone. Just because one has good graphics/maps, doesn't mean that people will play. If the gameplay/settings are good, people will stay. It really doesn't matter what graphics you have as long as they match whatever the settings are about. An example? The first DS zone. Extremely crappy ship graphics I made using shipmaker (the crappy program). People still played even though the graphics sucked. Why? Settings. I just have an idea at the moment. If I could copy a bigger zone's settings and add graphics + sounds + a new gameplay, then people would play. But then again, that's just my philosophy.
Tascar Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 but won't many people say "this is just a copy" then get mad and leave? But...since you have me reading this (again)...how about this... go and figure out the settings to each big zone's good events. Then make a zone which is just a big mess of those events. I still think people will reject it because of its unoriginality....but good luck.
Paxil Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 Umm, I wouldn't teach anyone else your technique.
Paky Dude Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 True, I wouldn't either. It's just waste of a time.
Xeterax Posted March 19, 2004 Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 Alright, here's another question. Would it be legal for me to post the settings on a website somewhere or these forums? Since they're re-created and all, would I get in trouble? Just curious because I'm copying a pretty big zone at the moment. I'm already done with 5/8 ships. I did one a day for 30 minutes. I'll finish the rest next week.
