i have been thinking that but when i uninstall the driver plug and play finds the device again. I want to consider an xp bug (again) fisst as i dad a similar usb problem where thay didnt work at all after installing SP1 and upgrading to pro from home. I cant fiond anything on the maze that is microsoft knowelege base though

done that, it detects it immidiatly which is why im reluctant to call it a hardware error atm.  Will safemode stop the uato install process?

Hmm not sure but you could try it out.

Do you have a drivers cd-rom for your laptop?

lil its a laptop so thay are plugged in. Also of the speakers were fried it would work with headphones and wouldnt return the driver error so thats not whats wrong.

I was speaking with theior tech support team and they think its probably a windows bug.

remove everything !@#$%^&*ociated with the AC 97 sound from the device manager. restart puter...dont let windows load. bring up the bios right away and disable the onboard sound and the on board game port if you see such an option(if your lt has one). then restart the computer(save changes and exit).

let windows load. and it shouldnt find any new devices !@#$%^&*ociated with sound. cept maybe the gameport if its got one(serial) look in the device manage to verify.

restart and enter the bios and enable the on board ac97 sound & game port again and restart the computer. windows XP shouldnt need any driver disc for ac97 sound or the rudimentary controler support when it finds it. (i dont think)

you may be having some interupt problems. why this would suddenyl occur unless you recently changed something is beyond me...but hey this is windows were talking about, on a lt to boot. eheh

worth a go maybe. sounds like youve done tryed all the update your driver junk.

thats what i would try smile.gif

you could get some diag proggies to maybe give ya hint as well. like SIS sandra. it gives you quite a bit of tech info about your puter's status.

i will try that when i get home Zig, thanx.

fluffy - a hdd swap is out of the qu, it woulkd void the warranty and i dont plan on paying for hardware faults. Also i dont know anyone with an identical system so they will have diffrent drivers.

Last night i tried drwatson and check disk and no errors were found by them so i may have to try formatting C: and starting again :( which i really would rather not do.

That voids the warranty too.

Accually the warranty is for hardware only.

well i phoned their tech support and they said that all options have been exhausted so i used the last resort dissk, installed all drivers with the driver cd and im still getting a code 10. This means that the hardware must be dead and its being sent off for repair.

thanx for the help guys, we tried blum.gif
