an old player on the email list posted this

Here is the best info I can find in my archives about the league.  First email is the tournament which led to the creation of a league (6/1996).  Second is the email officially kicking off the pyramid league (7/1996).  Third is the latest email I can find about the pyramid standings (3/1997).  Finally is the last email I can find with individual league records (3/1997).  I think after that everything went to the message board instead of email (or Ego ragequit, I'm not sure because everyone ragequit multiple times in those days).  Unfortunately, I can't find anything that lists the outcome of every match in one place.  If anyone wants to post this on the current message boards, go ahead.

Interesting trivia, I played for Strychnine in the first tourney before later joining DD.  I think Rod was on that squad too, and Phunistle was captain.  Enjoy,

DP

This is an email about round one, I believe this was the first round ever of the league.  I think this was single elimination, and that the next tournament in July instituted the pyramid system.

This email from Egoslasher was the genesis of the pyramid league (sent 7/30/1996):

"Ok Im going to start a new tournament even thought the
old one is not finished. This tournament will be a
status based tournament. Its going to be run similar
to boxing (without the corruption :)). Any team can
enter the tournament at any time. The goal is to achieve
the Ultimate Champion slot and defend it for as long as
possible. Here are the rules:

There are 8 levels or tiers in the tournament. Each one
is a ranking, 1 being the Ultimate Champion. There are
limited slots in all the levels except for level 8
(Newbie rank). Hopefully in the future we will get
graphics showing the pyramid, and maybe even symbols to
put on the names in the game for the higher ranked teams.
The Pyramid looks like this:
Level 1____Ultimate Champion (1 slot)
Level 2____Star Lord (2 slots)
Level 3____Elite (3 slots)
Level 4____Star Gladiator (4 slots)
Level 5____Expert (5 slots)
Level 6____Veteran (6 slots)
Level 7____Novice (7 slots)
Level 8____Newbie (unlimited slots)

The slots represent how many teams can exist at that
rank. In order to raise a rank: 1. If there is an
OPEN slot one rank above you, you need to challenge
and beat a team AT your current rank. The winning team
from that challenge will rise to the next rank, the loser
will stay. 2. If the rank above you is FULL, you need
to challenge one of the teams in that rank above you, if
you win you will rise to that rank and they will drop, if
you lose both of you will stay at your present ranks.

ANY TEAM CHALLENGED HAS 2 WEEKS TO PLAY THAT GAME (rounded
to the weekend). If a match has not been scheduled by the
end of the 2nd week I will chose a play time. What this
does is force teams to defend their positions, and rewards
teams for being active with challenges. If you dont challenge
then you wont rise up.

The matches themselves will be scored like the last tourney:
3 deaths an out, must be positive bounty to be a legit kill,
1 hour time limit, 5 minutes to powerup prior to the start
of the match. Btw burst and energy depletion have been
taken out of the League zone, and the minimum (self)
bounty base to become positive has been raised to 30 (from
12 or whatever it was).

See next post for current tournament seeding and entering."

"------next post------
Ok here are all the teams I have entered for this
tournament and the captains of those teams. The
emails of these captains I list here I will use as
a thread in which to email up-to-date info.

IF YOUR TEAM IS NOT LISTED BELOW YOU ARE NOT ENTERED
INTO THE TOURNAMENT, EMAIL ME AT  {email removed}
TO REGISTER!!!!!

Doomsday_____Tryam
Harvester of Sorrow_____Nightshade
Armageddon______Xenon
Bloodlust________another Backstabber
Strychnine________Slaughter
Happy Miners________Lost Boy!
Sea Queens_______Reinhold
Charlie's Angels______Foghorn Leghorn
Round Table______King Arthur
Hell Knights______Vijay
Black Dragon______ccm???
Phi Choda Pi________Solkanar
Iron Fist_________Tasslehoff
Alliance________ScOrPiOn
Thornake________Thornake
The Hive________Iceman

Some of these teams may no longer exist, and I may have
missed some. Either way is no problem, teams that are
not active will end up filtering down to Newbie rank.
You can enter a team anytime, drop a team start another
one, ect...and just register with me starting the
tourney at Newbie rank (level 8). If you lose a game
dont worry, there are no eliminations in this, just
moving up and down.

To start off here is the tournament grid:
(1)Ultimate Champion_________1 open
(2)Star Lord_______2 open
(3)Elite________3 open
(4)Star Gladiator_______4 open
(5)Expert________5 open
(6)Veteran________6 open
(7)Novice_________Armageddon, Doomsday, Harvester,
Strychnine, Bloodlust, Happy Miners, Black Dragon
(8)Newbie rank:
Sea Queens
Charlie's Angels
Round Table
Hell Knights
Phi Choda Pi
Iron Fist
Alliance
Thornake
The Hive
anyone who is added further

So to start: Newbie rank teams need to challenge
Novice rank teams, Novice rank teams need to challenge
each other in order to advance to the next rank.
Again, once a team is challenged they have 2 weekends
with which to complete their game. Who you challenge
is totally up to you. You cannot REFUSE a challenge
however.

If you need captain emails let me know. I will be
sending all of the captains of the teams above the
emails of the other captains. Please save that letter
for future reference when you desire to challenge a
team.

Explanation of terms:
# Available - They may challenge available teams above them, may challenge
at their rank, or be challenged from their rank or one rank below.
# May challenge only, available - They are not challengable from one
rank below them until the forementioned date.  However they may challenge
available teams above them, or challenge teams at their rank.  They may also
accept a challenge if they so chose.
# Challenged by/challenger to - They are involved in a challenge with the
following team and are not available to anyone else.
>>
Amoeba rank (lvl 9) teams may play each other for record, and the team with
the most victories automatically moves up to Newbie rank when a slot becomes
available.  If there is not a slot available on levels 7 or higher and a
same-rank challenge is won, that team is "in line" for the next available
slot. This is done chronologically by victories.  Amoeba rank teams are also
"in-line" chronologically, but only when the records are tied.  More
victories always takes precedence at level 9.  The order shown in Amoeba
rank is the order to advance to open slots, in all the other ranks the order
shown means nothing.

Subject: Pyramid League Rules - Revised 1/21

Please save this letter to a file:

1.  The Pyramid League is a fluid, continuous League in which teams have the
opportunity to raise up in rank through challenging and defeating other teams.

2.  The Pyramid consists of the following ranks (followed by maximum number
of slots):
Lvl 1 Supreme Champion (1 slot)
Lvl 2 Star Lord (2 slots)
Lvl 3 Elite (3 slots)
Lvl 4 Star Gladiator (4 slots)
Lvl 5 Expert (5 slots)
Lvl 6 Veteran (6 slots)
Lvl 7 Novice (7 slots)
Lvl 8 Newbie (8 slots)
Lvl 9 Amoeba (unlimited)

3.  All new teams start at Amoeba rank.  To raise to the next rank you must
challenge a team at that rank and beat them.  Or, if the rank above has an
OPEN slot, you may challenge a team AT your present rank, and with a win you
will advance up.  This is considered a "same rank" challenge.  Occasionally
a team will win a same rank challenge and then for some reason the Open Slot
at the next rank will be filled.  In this case the winning team will be
considered "in line" for the next available open slot.

4.  The team that wins a challenge rises to the next rank, and the losing
team drops to the lower rank.  If it is a "same rank" challenge, the winning
team moves up to the open slot in the rank above, the losing team stays at
the present rank.  The team that rises will then have a 1 week grace period
in which they get first opportunity to challenge a team either at their rank
(if there is an open slot at the next rank) or a team at the next rank.
They may be challenged by a lower team once the 1 week grace period is up.

5.  Teams have 2 weekends to schedule and play the match.  If the 2 teams do
not come up with a schedule within a reasonable time, I will assign a time
on the Fri of the last weekend for either that Sat or Sun.  If one team does
not show to either an agreed time or the default time I set, then they will
be disqualified for that match.  What this means is that the challenging
team will either get an opportunity to play or get a default win within 2
weekends.

6.  Challenged teams cannot refuse the challenge.  Any team presently
challenging or being challenged cannot challenge/defend any further until
the current challenge in affect is resolved.  These teams are considered
occupied and can not set up or negotiate matches with other teams.  Once
teams have played each other, they may not have a rematch until both teams
have played a different opponent.

7.  The games will be played in the League Zone under the following conditions:
# Teams can start up to 4 players, and have other members spectate.
# Teams will be assigned a GHZ of either 100 or 200.  The starting players
and possibly spectators must go to that GHZ.
# Each player in the match will have 3 lives.  These lives are for the slot,
so subs will inherit lost lives.
# Teammate kills will count as a death to the player affected, but the
teammate who got the kill will not get a kill credited to his/her stats.
# The match has a 1 hour time limit.  If the game is a tie after 1 hour of
play, the game will go into Sudden Death over time (or can be replayed
another time with approval of BOTH teams).  The next legitimate death ends
the game during Sudden Death overtime.
# Subs are allowed upon approval of the opposing captain, if they are not a
member of that team.  Team members may sub in for each other upon approval
of the referee.  All subs inheret the lives of the player being replaced.
# Non-team member subs may only be allowed before a match starts.  Once a
game has started, only teammate subs will be allowed.
# No subs during the last 15 minutes of a match, even if there is a disconnect.
# If a player is eliminated (3 deaths), that player cannot sub into the game
for another player.  Also, if a team has a player eliminated, the "slot" the
player was in cannot be subbed into.  Subs can only take the place of "live"
players.
# Each team slot (1-4) may only be subbed for once.  What this means is each
team can have a maximum of 4 subs, one for each slot.
# There are no burst, shield, superpower, or negative affect powerups in the
League zone.
# There are no safe zones.  If a player needs to take a break, they need to
announce it and switch to spectator mode.  If they leave while in the game
(to save their powerups for instance), then they are a free target.
# When a player dies, the referee should announce (in green letters) the
player who died, and the player who killed him/her.  This is to confirm that
the referee witnessed the score and has it recorded.  If you do not see the
referee's announcement after a score within a reasonable time (multiple
scores take longer for the ref to record) please message the ref with the
information.
# Changing ships is only allowed under the following conditions:  First you
must be away from any combat.  A good rule of thumb is to not have any enemy
on radar.  Then you must ask the Host referee to change ships.  The referee
will spectate on you, then give you permission.  You may only play each ship
type once during the match, and may not cycle back to the original ship.
Cycling is used for ship variety, not to refresh lost powerups.

8.  The match is won when either one team is eliminated, or the time runs
out and the score is NOT a tie.  Score is taken from deaths to the other
team, not kills.  If there is a teammate kill/death, the other team will get
a point for it. Elimination takes precedence over score.  For instance, if
team A has 2 players and scores 7 points, while team B eliminates all of
team A (6 points), team B will win regardless of points.

9.  When a game is scheduled, if one team tells the ref they are ready and
the other team is looking/waiting for members to show up, the game will
start in 10 minutes regardless of the number of players present.  This time
can be adjusted by the referee's decision depending on circumstances.

10.  Every team can play up to 4 players, even if the other team is short.
Non-team subs to replace missing players must be cleared by the opposing
captain, and do not have to be approved.

11.  Spectators must be on GHZ's 0 - 5.  Spectators who are members of the
playing teams may spectate on their team's GHZ as long as a ref is present
on that GHZ also.  If not, they must spectate on 0 - 5.  Spectators may not
give any information to either of the team's players, such as locations,
bounty, directions to go, strategy, ect.  If caught doing so the spectator
will be banned from League play.  General cheering, or information such as
time remaining and score, are allowed to be transmitted from spectators.
Spectators may be asked, or (if situation warrants) forced out of the zone
at the discression of the ref, or any of the players.  Spectating is a
priviledge not a right, so please be considerate of the ref and those playing.

12.  Changing rules.  Rules can be changed the following way:  A team
captain must send in the issue, describing what they want added or changed.
I will then make it a "Vote issue" to be sent out to all the teams.  After 1
week, if there have been at least 50% of the teams casting votes, the
majority will win.  If there is a tie I will break the tie with a vote,
otherwise I do not vote.

13.  There is no double squading allowed in League play.  If you play for
one team, regardless of how many accounts you have, you may not play for
another except as an approved sub (see sub rules above).  Anyone caught
double-squading will have the following possible consequences:  Stats
erased, team disqualified, banned from League.

14.  All matches will have a Host referee, and possible other referees
assisting in scoring.  All messages must be sent to the Host referee in
regards to the match.  Any disputes that arise during the match must be sent
either to the Host referee, or emailed to the League Administrator.

15.  Conduct must be appropriate while in the League zone during League
play.  If a player or the ref asks someone to stop certain types of
messages, they must stop.  If a player is argumentative or belligerent to
the ref, they will receive a WARNING and/or be asked to leave the zone.  If
the conduct continues, the player may be kicked out and banned from the
League zone.  Depending on the situation, the League administrator may
assign the banned player a "strike".  The first strike will only result in
the player being banned until their team's next scheduled match.  When a
player receives 2 strikes, they will be banned from League play permanently.

16.  All players playing in League play must be registered by their team
captain.  In order for a new team member to be eligible to play in a League
game, the League Administrator needs to be notified of the roster addition
at least 24 hours in advance.  If a player switches teams, the League
administrator must be notified of the switch at least 24 hours in advance.

17.  Sub rules in detail:
# Non-team subs can only join a game before it starts, and then only upon
the approval of the opposing captain.
# Team subs can sub any time, up until 15 minutes left in the game.
# Each starting player has a slot (1 - 4).  A team sub needs to be inserted
into those slots.  In order to sub, someone from the team needs to private
message the Host referee.  The Host will then announce the subbing, and then
tell the entering player and leaving player to switch.
# Once a player has subbed out, they may not sub in again for that game.
# Each slot is limited to one sub, meanting that there is a maximum of 4
subs for the game per team, one for each slot.
# Subs inherit the deaths of the person they are replacing.
# Anyone subbing without the direction of the ref will be considered an
illegal player and be asked to come out of the game by the ref.  It will
then be the refs judgement to allow the subbing if attempted later.

18.  Here is a few FAQ's commonly asked about the League:
?I want to get active in the Pyramid, what do I do?
First, you need to look over the latest standings.  Find what rank you
are at on the Pyramid, then look for teams labelled "Available" either at
your rank or one rank above.  These are the teams you can challenge.  If
there is an "Open slot" at the rank above your own, you can challenge teams
at your same rank, and by beating them immediately rise into that open slot.
If the rank above you is full of teams, playing a team at your rank and
winning only gives you a win for record.  To rise to that rank, you must
defeat an available team at that rank, in affect you "take the slot" from
that team.

?How do I challenge?
To challenge, find the captain of the team you want to challenge on the
Captain's list.  Send email to that captain, and Carbon Copy the letter to
email removed  so that he can register the challenge.  Inform the
captain you are challenging his team to battle in the League zone.  The
captain is obliged to honor the challenge within 2 weekends.  Offer
suggestions on times and days to get together and play.  It is important to
carbon copy all of this to EgoSlasher, so that he can find out when the game
is agreed upon.  It may take several letters back and forth before a time is
agreed upon.

?I've challenged a team, and have not gotten any response over several days,
what happens now?
Once EgoSlasher gets the carbon copy of the challenge, a deadline is
set for the game.  The deadline will be 2 weekends from the time the letter
is sent, usually.  You can find confirmation of the match in the next
Standings update.  If a captain does not respond to your challenge and
offers of times, EgoSlasher will assign the match a time.  This will be done
only if a time and day to play is not agreed upon (or responded to) by the
Friday of the deadline weekend.

?The rank above me is full, and none of the teams there are available.  Is
there any reason to play?
Yes, you can always challenge a team at your rank.  If there are no
open slots at the above rank, then beating a team at your rank will just
give you a win.  However, if a slot opens up later, teams with the most wins
will be first in line to automatically advance to that rank.  A win at the
same rank will put you "in line" for the next available open slot at the
next rank.

?My team just rose in rank, and is labelled "May challenge only".  However,
there are no teams to challenge at my rank or above.  What can I do?
The "May challenge only" label is just a grace period, giving you a
chance to make a profitable challenge.  If there isnt anyone to challenge,
and you want to play a team below you, you can mail EgoSlasher to change the
label to "Available".  You can't challenge teams below you, but you can
informally dare a team below you to challenge you.  Just keep in mind that
playing a team a rank below you will only result in stats and record, but
will not advance you.

I will mail current Standings and News for the Pyramid League every so
often.  If you have a question feel free to email me at removed
The League has a home page at miso.wwa.com/~wef/noware/league...it will
contain standings, stats, and other fun stuff.  It will be upgraded
continuously and suggestions are welcome.  There are other League home
pages, the links can be found on the Virgin Subspace home page.

Print some interesting tidbit of the code, then have it put on a "continuum" t-shirt.  Post on ebay.  Send gruntster the link.  Profit.

Doomsday was never GREAT at League. We were really good, but we were a squad composed of 1v1 duelers. I don't remember the exact placings, but at the end of that first, huge Dueling Tournament, something like 3 or 4 of the Top 10 were from DD and there were a SHITLOAD of competitors. If you counted the Top 20 it was something like 7 or 8 from DD. Again, I don't remember the exact results, but DD far outweighed other squads. Maybe someone has the record of that?

That was also when trixter cheated (not sure that twat is capable of not cheating in life, at anything), "Oh man I just happened to dc right when Prozac was about to fuck me up my fat ass". Paraphrased, of course.
