Can someone get me in touch with the Power Ball sysops / owner. I personally love the zone and game and would like to get their permission to at least keep it alive within TW, with their permission of course.

Any contact details anyone has for them would be appreciated. Thanks.

Numpf isn't active anymore, but StagShot has access to the server, so you could ask him. I'm not sure what the state of the server is considering the ddos'ing.

Powerball has been hosted in Chaos/League SVS Zone for several months now. Come and play (when the zone is back up!). ?go powerball

We could use someone to organize/schedule/advertise game times/nights so people know when to show up.

Whats the time frame here for everything to go back to normal if ever? Another week? A month? A year? I know Priitk knows but are you able to make some sort of guess based on what you know?

That was honestly the date he gave. This is out of his control. The host shut everything down not him.

Unlike most wish to assume, the biller isnt even on the same server as the zones. Heck its not even in the same region of the us. So it being up has no connection to his servers or the datacenter.

I am just wondering, if the hosting company was difficult to begin with - that they had suboptimal provisions to defend their network or recover it more quickly why is he sticking with them and sending them money?  It is of course amazing and tremendously generous that he has kept it running all this time.  I am just curious why he does not shop around?

There are plenty of other hosting companies that won't crash out like this so easily and would also work nicely from a performance standpoint.  This is what I'd set it up to use: http://www.internap.com/business-internet-connectivity-services/performance-ip/route-optimization-miro/

I would guess he has a DS3, not a cheap thing.. I have not looked at the rates anytime recently but I imagine it's still at least in the $4,500 /mo. range.  That is probably overkill for a few subspace zones unless there is a lot more traffic (which would be nice.)  I really hope that this is not the end of the road.  If nothing ever happens and others are interested in saving it, this is something I can setup and I also may have access to some existing networks I created (with fun toys like http://www.brocade.com/products/all/switches/product-details/bigiron-rx-series/index.page which might be possible to use but not without a bit of partitioning as they are heavily secured.  While I set them up, I do not own them so I would need to ask for favors.

Honestly at first thought I was surprised at Superb's failure to handle this. They are actually a rather large company backed by Level3 (one of US's biggest internet backbones, amazing for gaming), but it sounds like the attack was almost equivalent to a small datacenter hitting them.

TBH, this has been something we have thought about and discussed a bit. A lot of our players work for ISPs and at datacenters; many even hosting zones and other servers from their work with very little notice. I also talked with 1 such player about the attack, and he agreed that Superb's reaction was one that many would have taken to have a quick and simple resolution.

As a former Superb customer, I do know that they have montly options for support tickets. It is possible that Priit is not paying for any sort of support, thus they took whatever actions were needed in order to keep the stability of their network. We were casualties until Priit could be contacted, and the proper fixes then applied by either him, or the cost of support from them.

There is some recent info that shows the servers will most likely be back on new IPs (with even the possibility of new ports). There is no real confirmation from Priit on this, but some data does support it.

Personally I think it is time Priit got out of the zone hosting side of the house, and his zones found a new host. He was more responsive back in the days before he had to handle both the billers and the zones. Requests may have become too much of an annoyance to him, I don't know. But that is just my 2 cents, up to those zones to decide.

Just to let everyone know, we have a team working on solutions to all the problems. There are a lot of issues to sort out here, which unfortunately I can't go into detail on. But we have a plan that will get us up and running as close to the way we were as possible. It's going to take a little time but we are not simply hiding our heads in the sand, so don't disappear everyone, we will survive this!

In case anyone is interested in what a Denial of Service attack is and doesn't want to read a wiki. Basically explains about Amplified DDoS's.

"Can't do security through obscurity" Good quote.

I believe a proper DDoS could easily take down any company's servers or data centers. Their name doesn't matter. Superb is likely a great hosting company. Doesn't mean shit =)

I have an idea on how to mitigate this kind of attack in future.  It would be somewhat complex to implement however.

It would be possible to hide the real ips of the servers from outside though the use of reverse proxy and multiple login servers.

in the event of attack it would just be a matter of changing the login servers ips (easy to do as they would be lightweight proxies, rather than whole game servers, and would be easy to spin up in the cloud)

It would be quite an effort to implement however....and probably not worth it given the rarity of this kind of event.
