Why not reset people individually, and automtically, after a set of inevitable goals has been achieved. Which means the player can't halt the goals to avoid their own reset.

I actually really like the idea of carrying an item or capability over to the next reset IF the above mentioned 'individual reset' system were put in place. The huge problem with that, tho, is that would actually be a disincentive. I played Hyperspace enjoyably for a few years. It was great. If the individual reset system you suggested were to be put in place the majority of experienced players will hate it because it makes reaching critical mass (maxed-out all of your ship settings / accumulated everything) pointless. Now, if players could CHOOSE to reset with a command, then the other idea of carrying an item or capability over through resets is actually brilliant. Although I'm not sure how much I would like self-resetting and I'm sure there's negative things I haven't thought about with that type of 'self-resetting' system.

The current system of seemingly random resets works pretty good in my opinion. Had fun for years that way. Many, many others enjoy it as well. It's definitely not broken.

Good thoughts, tho.

problem is, some players have already raped the zone, and are bored with it.... and spidernl can't keep up with them......

spidernl codes for the casual gamer

the rapists are bored, spidernl

and fyi, I lied..... I didn't buy any cobalt gum or eggos

I feel like we could solve all this arguing with a simple.... a/s/l....... followed by ?userid

What if you got rid of resets and allowed a player to reset themselves after reaching a certain amount of exp? After they reset themselves they get a permanent minor bonus to their stats that they get to choose at the cost of losing everything. So someone could keep working towards that exp to reset and gain a perma stat bonus or they could never reset and keep their stuff, up to them. This could open up further build customizing if you had to choose between several stat bonuses that stack. Kind of like a phoenix rising from the flame.

I asked for good solutions, not "reset some players earlier so they have absolutely no motivation to play anymore" or "let players reset themselves for a bonus". The latter is particularly problematic. What do you do about players who play so much they'd have reset themselves five times by the time the more casual player does it once? They'll have a significant and unfair advantage.

Doesn't work, needs better solutions.

Other MMORPGs tend to use money sinks. Maybe look into that. Money and EXP sinks..

I agree allowing people to reset themselves is going too far.. However i still think the idea of an individual, automated reset system is good. It's essentially the same as the current reset system, DIFFERENCE being, Instead of resetting everyone at the same time. They are reset at different times. With the added INCENTIVE, of bonuses to be carried over per reset.

If someone plays a lot and resets five times, how does it give them a significant unfair advantage? Currently if i enter Hyperspace to play. Guess what? Everyone has an 'unfair' (fair) advantage over me, because im a new player. i see many people in Hyperspace at different levels of building their ship already. It's not that big of a deal.

Now if you make the rewards that carry over to the next reset significant, then the advantage will be significant. But if you make it so after 10 resets a ship is only marginally better, and still killable by a noob. Then there won't be much advantage. The incentive however will be that small advantage, and the idea of customizaing your ship through the reset. For all we know one of the rewards could be, creating your own item to add to your ship which you keep forever. Such an item would have limitations, that spidernl sets in the creation menu, but you could name it and so on. So if such an item was a weapon, it could have only so much damage, and if you choose damage you lose some fire rate, if you choose more fire rate you lose some damage, and so on. But essentially you could scale it either way so everyones weapon would be different. Customization is Motivation.

i also don't see how players would have no motivation anymore. The motivation is that you achieved some in game goals. Allow me to make up some fake goals here so we can see how it works. One goal can be that a player needs 50 million for the automate reset to begin taking place. Second goal, they need at least 2 high end items. Third goal, they need a certain amount of kills/deaths. And so on, you have to figure out what the criteria would be for the module to auto reset a player. They play, they achieve so much. They get reset, they likely won't even know what the criteria is to be reset. So it still acts like the current reset by being suprising. But now they get a choice between certain rewards. A high end item, more starting money per each reset, or a permanent bonus to stats. As a player, this would give me more incentive to play not less. Especially when we have to go through resets anyway. Might as well go through them this way.

how is it an unfair advantage for players that play all of the time? if you look at current games they all cater to ppl that play all the time and make it impossible for someone just starting out to have any chance of winnig against someone with better stats and equipment yet they still play because they are driven to be the best, or at least have a chance at fair competition. the bonuses i was thinking of would be very very minor like +1 speed, repels +1, bulletdamage +10 etc etc. keep the bonuses as simple as possible so that if you do a new item set which would require a reset, ppl dont feel like they wasted their time. i think the zone has been deader than normal because there being a reset looming due to the talk of a new itemset, no one wants to waste their time just to lose it tomorrow, in a week, a month who knows.

i like alot of black ops' approach to leveling, especially the prestige system and it is a game that allows one to have significant advantages yet a new player can still kill someone whos level 50 becuase at the end of the day it is all skill.

Well you never know, if some of these clients pull through, particularly the Phoenix client, then all of these prestige systems, automated resets, and everything else will be more than possible.. I'd say Hyperspace would benifit most of all from the new client. As the new client adds many features that help your type of zone. Maybe spidernl will just wait until the client is more viable for half the changes he wants to do.
