PoLiX Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 14 Years... Almost seems sad when you think I am 27 years old and that is more than half my life. Played this game on my friend’s dad’s computer, but never really got highly involved in it. Did get my own copy, but didn’t have the internet at the time on my parent’s computer so never played it. 12 Years... My cousin talked me into downloading SubSpace. Tried it, looked familiar to a game I remembered, but Quake2 was more fun. (Sorry Trench Wars). Tried out SCF West again a few months later when my cousin had moved there, and I was hooked. Eventually clicked on a zone I swore I recognized, but found it to be so much different (later learning how much SSX !EXTREME GAMES! had changed). But alas, I was hooked. Few months later I created “PoLiX” to work with new players and created a squad with another player. Lots of squads and history there… 11 Years… I found SSCentral.com while browsing SubSpace websites. It looked like it needed some help, so I hired on. Quickly I found myself helping update/add content, and even doing a whole redesign of the site. T-Man made me an admin of the site, and off I went changing the layout, updating the pages and scripts, and even managing hosting of zones and squads. 10 Years… Rowen and I decided to create a new central forum system to compete with ForumHQ. We dubbed it SSForum.net and it took off like a rocket. Still to this day I think it was highly successful and serves a valuable purpose in this community. 8 Years… Living far from family and friends, working overnight with very little sleep, and breaking up with my only connection to life (girlfriend) I decided to move back home as find a new job. But I had become so entangled in things SubSpace (Staff in zones, developer, programmer, website admin, etc. etc.) I knew I wouldn’t be able to dedicate the time I had before. I began trying to quit but people literally just wouldn’t let me and I felt more and more work was piling on. The only choice I had was to jump on the offer to sell SSForum.net to SA>SwiftAttack (swift) and then get myself net-banned. I know it sounds dumb, but it was the only logical way I felt I had left. 6 Years… Swift said he needed some help with the forums and websites, so I stepped back in and offered to help out. Little did I know this would begin my return to the game and a community of sysops who were highly against me being involved again. Luckily the sysops who really mattered in the long run accepted me back, and we worked together on various projects to enhance the community again. 5 Years… Ghost Ship messages me the constant bugging and spamming of Priit has paid off. He was going to send us Continuum .39 Final Beta to be tested. Being SSForum had the most active technical support, he figured we’d be the best to control it. We ran closed for a bit, and then Ghost gave the ok to pass it out publicly. So began a large divide in the community as some sysops were outraged the council had not been given 1st access. Luckily these sysops were all gone very shortly anyways. Well .39 worked out well, but due to a bug in Subgame, it was decided to rename it to 0.40 Final. This will honestly probably be the last version of Continuum. Sorry folks… 3 Years… Ghost Ship gives me Level 1 Netwide BanG to help the smaller zones without Level 1 ops manage net-bans, set net-bans, and manage their Level 2 ops (I would later fix this giving almost all zones a Level 1 Operator of some nature). I then ran into an issue with a player in TW stealing names, and this thrusted me into the next spotlight. To help manage the issue Ghost Ship gave me billing op, removing the previously inactive ones. I was then told Mom would be my partner, and we began trying to keep tickets actively managed and help players retrieve their lost/stolen aliases. 1 Year or so… After finding out my Wife was pregnant, I decided it was time to make my move out of SubSpace. I 1st wanted to make sure SubSpace had a decent domain name for me to leave it with. I had heared of .co domains, and jumped on SubSpace.co after seeing Continuum.co snatched quickly. I also recommended that a new BanG Admin be hired, and the trust I had begun to have in SpaceHiker made me feel he’d be a fitting replacement. I was working both as a BanG Admin and a Billing Operator (Mom as primary), which was something previously “Not Allowed” and knew it had to be someone trustworthy and level headed that’d be accepted to continue that. So as far as SSC goes, you are being left in very capable hands with Mom and SpaceHiker. We have also added Dav & Ratio/The Junky to the team not long ago. I began an admin search here in order to find my replacement. I had not had much success (though my admins have always been great) in finding someone with the knowledge and time to take over. Gallitin had offered before, and I figured “Why Not?”. He had proved valuable, level headed, and knows IPB very well. I believe he will keep the site running, and assist the community as needed. I will hang around for a bit to help him get acquainted as needed, and to transfer over what needs transferring. I am very confident though that you won’t notice much change in how things operate around here, though you may see improvements and projects I failed to complete completed. So… Long winded, sure. But I could type LOTS more. God knows I somehow did a lot for this game over a rather short period of time. I carried a lot of my experience, and the leadership skills I developed here into my careers. Currently am in line to take over as Trade Instructor and Work Leader for my trade. Many have asked what I do for a living, and it is very hard to explain without explaining things I cannot. But the simplest terms of it is I work for the DoD's NAVSEA Division, where we design and build specialized tooling to do repairs/upgrades on US Navy vessels (nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers to be precise). My main role in this is designing, and grinding the cutters used in these machines and the machining of them (IE: Tool & Cutter Grinder). I was hired to be a Toolmaker Machinist, but found my love on the other end of the shop. Might be the ability to use CNC Machines, but really is only part of it. I get to teach people every day, and help them learn a whole different part of our Toolmaking trade they don’t always get to on the outside. Well, I enjoyed my time here. I won’t be 100% gone, but I won’t be actively contributing to the community anymore. I hope I leave you all in good hands. As we say, “Fair Winds and Following Seas”… Or is that "Fair Solar Winds and Following Open Space"... Oh well Quote

Arry Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 One thing I've noticed.... nobody leaves ss for good (well unless they ded, bro). The community may shrink, but then things get simplified, and growth happens.... bringing in more players and revitalizing the game.Thank you for your service, PoLiX... I know I didn't communicate with you much, but when I did it was always a pleasure. The light will always be on for you.... maybe you can get rid of my warning points on the way out, lol Quote

Plutorus Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Thanks for all, Polix! Wish you the best with family and future A few months ago, we spoke for the first time, when I PM'ed you with a random question in chaos zone. You were both gracious in answer and generous with time. I feel fortunate that I had the chance to meet you then. -Plut Quote
