Well it seems obvious prickt has no interest in updating zones/fix.dll. PB is waiting for billing approval of our new IP, and then we are inviting any asss zones to jump on our server (full shell access, some other perks =). Looks like we will have trisector, devastation, and hopefully EG on board; CZ disabled peering, so that leaves no "inflators" left..Then we can all move on from the SG handcuffs

WOW dr. brain are you serious? not in game much.... god damnit... You may not play or care about the game but others do. Even without eg dsb inflating, your zone would still have less population as it was for the last 6 years i was aware of your zone before the whole inflation. To be honest I think you are just making excuses to try to make your zone more popular and not look like a dipshit. From what I know of this and I may be wrong they just pretty much made other zones accessible through their zone. THAT ADDS FUNCTIONALITY. Your bullshit doesnt.

Surly if the aim was to lure people in a number less obvious then 1000 would have been selected. That was the point, because inflation in the other zones is not obvious at all until you dig deep and find noone playing.

Whilst I disagree with population inflation of any kind I can clearly recognise that it took somone pushing it to a silly level to make people notice. Short term the impacts are pretty bad, but a long term resolution to this issue is in everyones interests, system admins and TW trolls alike.

Brain doesn't care about population, he would be the first to kill his zone over his own interests than to accomodate 100 players. If 100 people didn't agree with his zone rule of no swearing, he would ban them all, and go back to being a 30 player zone. Edited by Lone Outlaw

Aren't you the guy that used to troll every thread in tw. I think this is the first post I've seen you make where you try to be constructive. Yeah you posted population for a year so what? what does that show? Am I missing some point? How does it even relate to what I wrote?

I find myself making this point over and over again...

Zone rules are made by zone owners, if you dont like it dont play there. Anyway thats a sperate debate to the population counts entirely.

I don't see any personal statements in my above post Dav, just some facts.. lol

it's his perogative if he wants to kill his zone or make it a gay bar or whatever, though no one saw it that way with Hoch, i guess people didn't want 200 players to quit ss back then. HS is no where near that important yet, but if the owner of trench wars wanted to kill Trench wars tomorrow, we could just say it's his zone let him do what he wants. Even though its likely the owner was an IDLE spectator through the years and the success of trench came from countless other peoples hard work. A zone in no way belongs to anyone but the dude who doesn't even care to login and play it. =P

except hes the guy who pays for the server it runs on and all the bills with his own money irl, and wrote the server running, and wrote the clients that connect to it

but who cares about that guy

except i never specifically talked about brain, i brought up trench wars as an example, and even then i used the word "likely" the owner is an idle spectator. (implying that i don't really know, but if that is the case, my point is valid)

Regardless paying for a server is not that much of a big deal, back to brain, if he wanted to kill HS, and spidernl didn't, it would make more sense to let spidernl pay for HS, especially since spidernl built alot of that zone, and then brain could retire as zone owner.

I've watched countless zones die due to change of ownership, and vowed to never have HS go through that. Better to kill the zone and have someone remake a similar one (with clear ownership) than to let it die to infighting. Hoch did not understand this, and rather than shut down DSB cleanly, he let it fester. I said as much at the time, but we were never on good terms.

It's officially over. I just removed the +1000 from HS, after confirming that PB, EG and CZ are no longer inflating their pops. Everspace still has to remove their random number, but I'm confident that will happen in short order.

It's only because we are on a new server and haven't gotten billing access yet..Once things are back to normal, we'll enable it again for asss or SG-fixed zones.

PS - Any asss zone looking for hosting is welcome on our new server, it is more powerful than you can imagine =)

The most time consuming and biggest source of mistakes are when dealing with threads in ASSS. I think it needs a different approach to threading if it should get more adoption.

I also suspect there might be a few bugs in the core asss code related to threads, but I am not sure about this.

See https://bitbucket.org/grelminar/asss/issue/118/threading-locking

First, you need to clarify whether you intend to return to a situation in which our pop (or our peers) is inflated. Second, since I'll be handling hosted zones, please don't volunteer me for more work, especially yet :p

If anyone wants to be hosted by PB's new machine, there are conditions. You will have to use bleeding-edge asss, testing changes to it as I make them. All your source will need to be on the server, and I will have access to it, to debug if necessary. And you will have to wait. The way I have deva set up is sloppy and I want to fix it first, so I have a good template to work from.

The latest bleeding-edge asss can inflate pops if you 'return to such a situation'?

Also didn't devastation go down because snrrub updated his server? What exactly did he update? Now you will be updating asss, will that not just bring devastation back to the previous problem? Where the zone goes down, because of some incompatibility or error, and no one is available to fix it? ie snrrub didn't care, so why would you change your schedule to bring a zone up within a day or two? Especially considering your time frames, of 1 year to fix inflated pops. How long to bring a zone back online? 6 months?

And why even go back to inflated pops? It's fine now. Everything is accurate for once.

i understand now why brain has to go to extremes to deal with this retardation.

Snrrrub changed to a 64bit machine and didn't have a compatible security.so. I have been told he was sent one (or pointed to one) that should have worked, but insisted on being given the src code. It's somewhat plausible that he really did need the src, but given certain concerning behavior of his, and the sensitive nature of the security.so src, he was denied. We don't have the same problem because I have access to the src, and have compiled it for our machine (also 64bit).

Deva's staff seem pleased with the setup. They have an ssh account and a couple devs who can do almost anything they need to to maintain their zone. If it really matters to you or anyone, I suggest you wait and ask them how they feel about us as hosts after they've been on our machine for a while.

tm_master is happy with you numpf and the hosting you provide, but he was happy with snrrub, and really he would be happy with anyone that helps devastation stay online.. he is always happy.. everything is fine while it's working, but i want to see what happens if shit hits the fan.. hopefully it never does.

And really why does stag want to go back to inflated pops? That's what i understood from his and your posts.

I see no way of answering your first question beyond what I have said. What might happen to deva if something weird happens sometime in the future? Shrug. We can fix problems with security.so, our host has been around for a multiple of the amount of time snrrrub has had ssca up, and our host is not developing a facebook competitor to cont. That's the best I can do for you.

I don't know what stag wants, which is why I suggested he clarify. Peering is only coincidentally offline in PB (and therefore all the zones that use PB as a hub for peering). I have set up a tunneling arrangement, but it would require extra effort to set up peers and make a mess in our firewall config, so we decided to just turn it off for now. I was under the impression stag wanted to put it back as-is once priitk adds us to the firewall, but now he seems to be saying something different.

Dr Brain, please restore Hyperspace's population adjustment. It was incredibly handy. You can see if people are playing just from the zone list. I don't see what all the fuss is about. You can clearly see the zone's true population count. It's not like some obscure number is being added. It only appeared when people were in ships. That in itself is the single most useful feature to come out of this whole shared arenas fiasco. Edited by P Nut
