This is a direct quote from http://playinfantry....ic.php?f=5&t=15

After a night of playing around in Continuum I started thinking about how easy it would be to implement their zones with Infantry's engine. I got to talking with a few of the core players and they generally agree that something needs to be done to keep their game alive.

What I'm proposing is blatantly beneficial to both games' date=' and that proposition is a merge. (Taking subspace's zones and implementing them in Infantry.)

Why? We would be able to centralize the population and communities of two VERY similar yet very different games. The base similarities are what would make this merge extremely painless and easy, while the differences would make for an interesting upgrade for the remaining subspace players. Everything over there is super outdated and does not look to be due to any updates anytime soon.

How would this work? Very simply, Would need a few active Infantry developers to help implement the aspects of SubSpace's various zones into Infantry's format. And considering Subspace uses a pretty generic set of items/vehicles for each zone, All we would need is a base set of files to build each zone off of. (This would literally probably only take a day to cook the basics up)

This would mean that the players of subspace would have to download our client, but in many ways it is obviously worth switching.

I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this idea before moving forward with it so please leave comments/ideas.

Prove to us that it can be done. Take a basic zone with publicly available settings (like Chaos) and make an infantry version, changing as little as humanly possible. You probably don't need to spend much time on the map (I'm presuming it can be done if one takes the time to do it), but everything else should be duplicated. The things you can't duplicate will dictate how likely people are to move.

I've played Infantry a few times and genuinely prefer the client. If you can get this done, it would be fantastic. If you need anything in the lines of hosting let me know.

The big issue that I can see here, is that subspace really has no localized leadership. Your biggest hurdle wil be convincing the individual zone owners and their respective communities that this is what's best for them. I don't want to say it's a lost cause but it seems like a long shot at best, to me.

I can't speak for other zones but I've been around EG coming on 12 years now and I can say with a degree of certainty that any motion for change will NOT be popular in the community. I can also foresee other problems with a client switch, such as the loss of players who don't realize a change is being made. It happened when we switched to continuum and it will happen again. At this point in Subspace's lifespan is it really worth it?

I can see a lot of detrimental side effects coming from this and to be quite frank, it seems much more beneficial for Infranty which has a much, much smaller playerbase.

Alrighty. That's all I have to say. Back to obscurity.

How would they know to download Infantry? Personally, I stop in SS here and there but keep it installed. What about the people who only install when they feel like playing for a few days? What happens when they install the client and see all zones down?

I think it's a good idea, but I don't think you'll be able to get everyone to "make the switch" without butting a few heads. It could potentially make things worse. Some zones will merge, some won't, and that'll cause a whole bunch of unnecessary confusion.

Now, going with what the Doc said, if you could prove that this would be a quick and painless switch, I'm all for it. If it's a simple process to switch over to Infantry, then I'm sure it'll make more zone owners make the merge.

Oh and bring back MG.

I find a common problem within group projects extending another. Realize this, that you cannot interfere with lower levels of the game hierarchy without any form of corruption or issues happening.

In Aphelion, I feel strong about my project remaining unbaised towards the lower level, the community level (not lower in a sense of value). In this client I am purely looking at it in the game level, so I can remain focused on the game level problems, and not try to fix communities instead.

That being said, I see this inevitable in a community/fan ran setup.
