Dr Brain Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Yes, you claim the population number is meaningless, but if you don't inflate it you're going to put yourself at a disadvantage... so it it meaningless or not? Quote
spidernl Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 It definitely worked for Hyperspace. While we had OVER 1000 population, we got 'round 20 new players who actually sticked around. And another 50 or so who just wondered what the population was about. Claiming inflated population is meaningless, is silly. Everyone knows that whoever inflates population when others don't is more likely to get players to 'come in and have a look'. However, that's also the key to this all. When everyone inflates population, nobody gains from it. The only effect is that whoever doesn't inflate population, if anyone, looks bad in comparison. People get used to 100 population meaning 'nobody playing in a pub arena at all', and thus expect (for example) Hyperspace's 40 population to mean that as well. And then there's the obvious effect of looking like a bunch of elitist idiots to any player new to subspace. And the fact that it completely wrecks population statistics. Quote
Avast Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 (edited) Hyperspace is also a zone where people who played 5 years never tried Hyperspace before. Ovbiously It will work slightly for zones like that. However EG, Trench, Chaos, are all more well played, and people who played 5-10 years tried those zones out already, so sharing arenas, or faking populations, will not suddenly change peoples minds to go and play there. Unless of course those people are new players. Or never tried the zones before. Unlikely. Except in the case of HS, I played subspace over 10 years and only entered HS a total of 20 times, so of course with your 1000 population even i would be curious to see how lame you are. it will never work for DSB. Unless they fix their zone. On a side note..(20 players is not a big achievement) And they are not 20 players who stay constantly, Or are you saying 20 people came all at once? Or perhaps 20 different people over a period of 24 hours. Or maybe 20 people and you will never see them again. But you can keep dreaming, also in the long run you are harming yourselves. Never try to assume you know more about psychology than the troll god. Edited November 19, 2011 by Avast Quote

Stag Shot Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Update: DSB has implemented a patched fix.dll (patch is 2 bytes btw), and all appears well so far. Population bug fixed! Now, can you guys on prickt's box find a way to update the file? Quote
PoLiX Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Highly doubtful. I'll bug Ghost and see what access he has to the server again, but there isn't much we can do. Or send it to Priit and ask him to replace it for our zones. Again doubtful, but worth a shot. The side effects of priit zone hosting.... no development, just like the game. Quote
baked cake Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Yeah we got a tons of people come in and check out our "new population boost." More than half were trolls from other zones. The only people who stuck around for more than five minutes are the children who probly still think there 1000 more people playing somewhere in our zone. CON - Sales men are not dishonest to thier customers when they know its something they cant hide. PRO - It sparks attention to continuum if not just for a split second, and gets people looking at us. IMO - We just caught some poeples attention, I dont think its wise to start off with a blatant lie. It is 100% an act of desperation, and that is tthe only way other (new) players will see it. Quote
Ghost Ship Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Well, isnt this fun. No I dont have access to the servers to modify the fix.dll's. I can try and contact Priit about this, but it looks like he may already know about it. I know he still cares about SS, as he is still running the biller, hosting a couple of servers and off and on modifying subgame. I will contact him and see if he can fix the dll for the inflated pop count.Ghost I have no access, your arguement is invalid. Quote
»LtNirvana Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Thanks ghost. It's amazing that you or Priit are still involved with the game in any fashion, so I think we should be grateful you're still around. Quote
Stag Shot Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 I hope this can be fixed, it's literally one line of code in fix.c (pop += peerpop). I suppose the better question to ask is why SG binaries are off limits to the zone ops. It's not for security, the Cont protocol is pretty well characterized at this point..Passwords are hashed for all SG zones afaik, so pw stealing is no longer a worry. Speaking of security, I've also heard that TW (prickt's unofficial zone) is running some sort of bot interface that probably represents the greatest security breach since twister.. So why the limitations? I heard ops can't even reset their own zones. That's extremely prohibitive, and counterproductive. Heck, when SSCX was run out west (~2004), we had a little web interface to restart zones/processes. SG zones on prickt's box are the least of the security concerns; you do realize anyone running asss on SSC can still run in the old billing mode with plaintext pw's (PB was inadvertently running this way until ~2 months ago) . So it seems like this security "model" is not only antiquated, but actually backwards. Sorry for the progressive mindset, but I've never accepted limitations well. We don't want the keys to the castle, but leave a door open at least =P Quote
»Maverick Posted November 23, 2011 Author Report Posted November 23, 2011 (edited) :offtopic: Ofcourse it's not great that nobody but the server host has access to the zone files and binaries. I know that Priit K. does it because he's afraid of abuse of the access and mistakes people can make. I've seen a couple of people (in high places) go absolutely nuts and try to ruin the zone. Speaking of security, I've also heard that TW (prickt's unofficial zone) is running some sort of bot interface that probably represents the greatest security breach since twister..I'm not that involved in Trench Wars anymore but I highly doubt they do anything that makes the zone less secure. Can you elaborate about the bot interface? I only know of TW Chat that could expose a security risk but with enough moderation it really isn't. Edited November 23, 2011 by Maverick Quote
PoLiX Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 Having the ability to login to any zone on VIE encryption is a huge security risk that shouldn't just be publicly allowed. The only benefit they have is people don't have access (yet) to the old cheats that got you partial sysop access, could crash subgame, or steal arena settings, etc. etc. Most of those cheats were just fixed with Continuum, not subgame. When I brought it up to them, it was cause it was brought up to me by not so trustworthy people. More of a "hey, look at what TW is letting us do now" type of thing. But hey, this is the same zone who was sent a list of website exploits, and I doubt most any of them were fixed. And the same zone when their players had their passwords stolen, they didn't alert them with news.txt, arena messages, or anything. I don't doubt Priit's caring for the game. Just wish he had more time to spend on it again. Obviously he wouldn't spend the money on it, effort to fix major bugs when we find them, or the time playing with TW's subgame if he was just done with us. TBH, I sometimes wonder if he just got tired of trying to come up with all the ideas for Continuum that didn't help just 1 zone, or that were really worth the effort. Especially being he had .39 final (now .40) done for so many years, and just never released it. Quote

No_Remorse Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Whoever is in charge of this needs to assess the usefulness arena sharing, which imo is not very useful. All that is being accomplished is making our community out to be deceitful. However, I'm sure this nice "population boost" of imaginary players will help maintain Subspace for years to come.... SMH.... Quote

SMH.... No, it's a great feature that's being marred by a ridiculous policy that handcuffs several zones. You realize some of these zones are running SG versions from 2004? It's ridiculous that development isn't even an option for these zones. Quote
No_Remorse Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 It would be an alright feature if implemented properly. Besides, using esc+q and scrolling to another zone takes fractions of a second unless something is wrong with your computer, I suppose... I stand by my original sentiment. Quote

Alium Posted December 4, 2011 Report Posted December 4, 2011 No idea what direction this thread was going before it crawled to a halt. But that last statement... Lol? You speak of things which you do not know my friend. fellow continuum player. ...Was fucking stupid. Interestingly as of this post Extreme Games, Trench Wars, Chaos, Powerball, and Star Warzone all have a healthy pop of 200+ it seems. (LoL) Hyperspace leading the score with 1031. (LoL) Everspace doing just, just awesome with its' bipolar population of 11-869. Oddly enough wanna say yesterday they were all reporting their real population minus the bots of course but eh. Somebody having fun trying to adjust everything but not much activity on this forum reflecting it. Wonder whats going on? Or what almost did. Quote
