They are.. what is that on the terrier?

They seem more hostile.. except for the terrier which would just make me laugh if it approached me. New goal! try to shoot a bullet inside the circle!

Honestly jabjabjab, i think you should take more community advice, if you do your own thing it will be original but doesn't really represent community well.. Also what happens when your client is completed along with 1 or 2 others? Will it be decided which client to use? Will all be used splitting off the population? Will the best one win? Or will you and say Richard join together and choose 1 client to back only?

I like em jab. Nice work. Sizing would be my only critical comment. WB too small, Jav could be a bit more bulky, Spider too big. Light ships: WB, Spider, Wzl. Medium ships: Ter, Shark. Heavy Ships: Jav, Levi, Lanc. That's just how they feel to me SVSish.

I like 'em. In fact I'd love to use them for HS (although they'd need some different sizes, but that's a matter of zooming in/out I suppose) if they aren't 'reserved' for Aphelion.

Edit: I do agree with Cheese about the Terr. A little more saturation would help. It looks like it's trying to decide whether it wants to be a deep red color, or a pink unicorn.

Terr actually is close to the color it is in current game.

If you notice colors on warbird are more red, than the color of the terr in continuum. (i think) not gonna bother logging in to check. (going from my poor memory)

Honestly that circle under your terr is what throws me off, structurally not needed at all. My opinion on ships is that they look better when they are more based in reality. So it could be space art, But i personally think it's better when designed with engineering principles in mind. ie aerodynamics if it's a space-to-atmosphere combat ship. Or fuel cells, shield generators. If your going to break off the wing of the warbird, and add two bars, and then recontinue the wing, there has be more of a reason than "i just want it to look different from the original, and can't think of anything else" changing things in an attempt to be unique is the worst reason to change things. Because usually you make something already good, worse. Now one reason to add that break in the wings, is that the wings themselves move up or down, like in an actual X-WING, or the flaps on a real plane. Of course you made the wings straight, so it doesn't really do anything, if the wings curved downwards after that break, it would fit the design. As for the terrier, perhaps if the circle was closer to the hull and more rectangular it would fit more.

Then the ships seem a bit sharp, perhaps removing the 1 line things on Jav, Spider, and Weasel,

Weasel is missing something, there is absolutely no hint of the old weasel in it (unless you want it to feel like a new ship entirely)

How do you know the circle on the Terrier isn't, say, a shield generator or 'warp drive' of sorts? Can't really talk about "lack of realism" if you're going to assume it's an unnecessary object added to spice up the model.

Yeah i can imagine things too. Maybe its a type of energy formed deflector shield, i've watched star trek. Obviously i thought of all the possibilities of what it could be. In question here is not your imagination or mine.

What i learned is that, in order for something to be 'science fiction' it has to deal with what is plausible. i could make a more plausible heat sink, deflector shield, warp generator, given by the thousands of better examples of such things that are out there, from startrek, or starwars etc. The problem here is that many people assume what is in games, books, or other areas, are things that developers or writers made up, but they actually take designs and ideas from the real world.

So is this design ever likely to happen in the building of a spacecraft? Probably not, at least not to me. Engineering wise there are better ways to implement a warp drive on a ship (again based from other designs i've seen). If one had a degree in engineering they would know beyond words, but through experience, that some designs are better for various reasons, either saving materials, or for stress/structural integrity purposes, for more efficiency and so on.

If it's not plausible, then its called 'fantasy'. Unless your talking about gene splicing then maybe combining a horse with a Narwhal can get us to unicorns someday.

It's just a bad design no matter what purpose you can think of for it.

it's not offensive or anything, i could live with it (and most likely will), it grows on you, plus in a 2D game you'll barely see the underside of the ship. But meh.

At any rate, something has to be said for all the work Jab did, and effort he put into the ships regardless, i never did as much work to put forth my own ideas, so good job either way. i am not trying to be ungrateful or anything, the designs are all almost perfect, i just focused on one or two things that bother me, but don't take it as if i think they are horrible, i just focus on negative aspects more. The ships are good. Some parts of some ships, are very impressive. i just tend not to talk about things i find i like, or find no fault in, i usually don't express what i agree with, because well, i agree with it.. So basically if i only narrowed in on the circle under the terrier, it likely means everything else i think is good..

And all spaceships should be aerodynamic!

Anyways to answer testtube, we are close to being able to fly around with each other.

I could achieve that within a day, but that would just be crap code we would throw away a week later.

Posted

Out of context is a nice way to show you are intelligent!

Aerodynamic, if it's a space to atmosphere combat ship. Not that any game is capable of such a game play, but books i've read have such things anyway.

Posted (edited)

How is a space to atmosphere ship not plausible? I'm talking about plausibility in science fiction as it pertains to someday existing in the real world. Not plausible in continuum. Almost shit is plausible in this dinosaur of a client (continuum). Even the Java client doesn't allow for as much possibility as the Phoenix Client.

Transparent windows in space, probably not. But windows comprised solely of a force-field may someday be possible.

The realistic renderings by rocket engineers of the possibility of what an actual trans atmospheric space craft might look like are all pretty darn boring, and would most likely not make for a good SS ship.

Slender looking, fragile things.

SS ships are bulky armored war machines, far removed from anything even being considered by actual engineers.

Outlaw you sound a bit manic.

We are not competing with phoenix;

I am not assuming that any existing zone must use aphelion, they can do whatever they want;

I want to create a platform out of my own interests, a decentralized platform in which every part is free and remains free (copyleft, such as agpl).

i asked you what your doing a few posts back, and you never replied

But thanks for the reply finally, btw do you know the 4 D's of a morally corrupt institution?

Denial - Deny there is a problem until it's so obvious you can't deny it anymore

Delay - Since you can't deny the problem, delay the action on it, send people to do a study first, or claim you have no money, give people the run around, refuse to talk to people, etc

Discredit - Discredit the person presenting the problem to you in hopes no one pays attention to them after

Divide or Minimize - Make the problem seem small, so you can continue your abuse.

You asked jabjabjab directly, I am not going to answer for him.

Your last post is very offensive, you could try to tone it down a bit.

Secondly, browse the forums of phoenix and see how I have tried to contribute.

I started working with jabjabjab on this before phoenix was announced. Things are moving this slow because I have a job in which half the time I do the same kind of work as I do for aphelion.

I work on aphelion in my spare time. Usually 6 hours a week at most.

I am not going to stop working on it because someone else might complete a similar project before me.

And as far as I have read (but I could be wrong), phoenix is going not going to be FOSS and it will be dependent on a single person. This is not a bad choice, it's just a choice I do not agree with.

My number one principal in this project is that there is no central authority/distributor/developer/ban hammer/etc. This is reflected in the plans for the supporting services (like user authentication) and the copyleft.

Posted (edited)

What do you mean by no central authority?

Right now Java Space (Aphelion) is being worked on by Jabjab and Jowie (maybe others). If something goes wrong, or an update is needed. Does this mean people will not need to rely on you? locate you? etc. Everyone can access and work on the code? So the client itself is not dependent upon one person? Is that what you mean by no central authority?

What is the copyleft?

Phoenix is dependent on Richard right now, because he is the only coder for the project, But i am sure every zone will have access, be able to make their own zones, hosted on their own servers etc. and Phoenix will be customizable enough to never require any interference from him, as people can use the client, to do anything they require. Only thing that might be needed are security updates. And who knows, perhaps Richard won't centralize authority on Phoenix updates. Maybe he will bring others into the fold. Can't really speak for him.

You guys are not that slow, still coming along pretty well.

what you dont understand is that when you get to the level of skills of jowie or rb, you couldnt give 2 fucks about whose whatever is whatever

you also need to understand that phoenix is completely separate from ss and is radically different
