First of all I am not sure why the topic was locked and I apologize for starting another.

I know at one point Audrey had a server for MG hosted by LYNX. I'm sure he would be willing to host the zone and the reason its not there is because no one was using the server.

It seems that its worth it to the community to have a zone like Metal Gear up and running. I know that the zone isn't up know because Team Audrey doesn't want to manage the zone, I assume they don't have the time.

I know for a fact that I could make an MG Clone zone on ASSS and be a fully functional CTF zone. As for events and sub arenas, thats for someone else lol.

I guess the real question I have is, who's going to be the person to "run" the zone? Which really only takes a few dedicated people and may not be needed at all if the zone gets developed further by the right people. I know that Cheese! had interest in remaking the zone and I know he is 100% capable of doing that.

Is this going to happen with other people? I mean, I'll through the zone up and see what happens.

Oh yeah, Happy Independence Day America!

There's a lot more to it than just putting the zone up.

First off, you have zone ownership issues. I think it's pretty much up for grabs right now, so I don't think that would be a problem. It could still be a concern down the road, though.

Secondly, how are you going to get a community? I mean there was a large community for MG, but it revolved around our metalgearctf.net forums, which are dead. Those kept players involved, even though they weren't actively playing. If your goal is to revive the community, your first step would be reviving the forums on the old address. I would assume TT still owns the domain. Once again, ownership issues.

Third, it's not just one person who runs a zone. You need a dedicated staff that consist of hosts/ERs, development, and staff organizers. Yes, you need someone that will organize all that, but without a community, who do you hire?

You could give it a shot, I have the majority of the files needed if you'd like them. My only concern is the general loss in population of SS as a whole. EG and TW have trouble keeping 100+ anymore, and MG was popular when both those zones had an avg of 300. MG was my favorite zone in SS, and it always will be, but helping the SS community at large would be much more worth dedicating your resources to.

I mean christ, if a game like Minecraft can become popular, we shouldn't be struggling that bad.

P.S.- I love Minecraft

EDIT: I don't know why the topic was closed either, especially when it ended with what seemed to be a love note. "Audrey is busy with me!! So now I'm closing this topic that has little to do with Audrey! "

For this to work, the following is required;

1. Somebody/people who can get the zone running on ASSS - preferably with Linux experience (Resol, Cheese!)

2. Somebody/people who have the time to sit in the zone and get some games started (X_PennyWise, Any MG players that read this)

3. Somebody/people who can try and re-create the previous community (Any MG players that read this)

To put it short, if I'm going to host MG again I need some evidence that you actually have a plan of some sort - if you do I'm happy not only to host the zone but to get the majority of bugs ironed out with you.

If you can't prove that to me you can either find another host, or you're not the right person to run the zone (as you're just getting peoples hope up for nothing; which is frustrating).

Also, as a question to X_PennyWise: if there is a community left from MG (I'm doubtful) - then perhaps you should speak to one of the forum administrators about setting up a sub-forum - if you can get some momentum of players posting then I'm sure it will be enough for a community effort in bringing MG back. Having one person do all the work is completely unrealistic now-a-days.

Why would someone need to prove anything to you? Unless this type of proof is something you require for hosting every zone. However I highly doubt you have the time to go through that much trouble for each zone, before you host them. And ask for references, and 30 pages documents, and peoples friends lists, to prove they have connections now. You want someone to basically have the 150 population zone, before it's even hosted online. That's ridiculous. If you don't do this for every zone you agree to host, then don't do it for MG simple. If someone wants to host MG. It is after all a NEW MG. It doesn't need to live up to shit in the past or have 100 people.

Having one person do all the work is not unrealistic. I could do it. I have 18 hours free a day. I know Linux. I actually play Subspace, instead of spec. And it's pretty easy to recruit for a zone. There is not many people who would decline responsibility and powers in a zone, if you are cool, and treat them nicely, and represent their ideas well.

I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make, Avast. However I'll try and fight my urges to make you look like a moron and reply to your post in a way that saves you some dignity.

Firstly, nobody needs to prove anything to me - I have nothing to do with MG. You're free to prove yourself to SSCouncil etc for billing or another host; I have no squabbles what-so-ever. :o

Secondly, what I expect really isn't a tall order - especially if you're considering throwing hours of your free time away for a video game. To know what ASSS is and some Linux basics is what I'd expect from most rookie subspace developers.

As for your final comment, if you feel you can get MG back up and running, on your own, with NO help then go for it!

Edit:

I'll just add a 'for the record'... Yes, every zone I host I expect some basics of Linux and ASSS knowledge as I host ASSS game-servers on a Linux machine. (With the only exception being TWDev)

"Firstly, nobody needs to prove anything to me"

Um...

"If you can't prove that to me you can either find another host, or you're not the right person to run the zone (as you're just getting peoples hope up for nothing; which is frustrating)."

Really and you go on about making people look like idiots, No need for that or you will just get the same treatment back. Plus I am a troll god, It's my job to be an idiot.

As for your final comment' date=' if you feel you can get MG back up and running, on your own, with NO help then go for it![/quote']

No I didn't say with NO help. I just commented on your statement that "one person doing all the work is unrealistic". I merely said It's possible. Is it preferred probably not. You could do all the work to the point of getting it hosted, and having it functional. But bottom line is every zone benefits more with more people involved in development.

To put it short, if I'm going to host MG again I need some evidence that you actually have a plan of some sort

A plan of some sort. This implies more than just "To know what ASSS is and some Linux basics is what I'd expect from most rookie subspace developers." You ask for a plan then contradict and say all the person needs is Knowledge? A plan and knowledge are two different things. I can be capable of ASSS, Linux, this has nothing to do with plans. You were obviously saying you expect people to have some further ability. I suggested what some of those might be. Like personal popularity. If the owner is popular, then the chances they will make MG a success is greater. If the owner can hire staff, and have lots of staff, that might also follow with having a plan. And so on. I mean what other plans are there? If you know ASSS and Linux, and played MG before, then you obviously know what an MG zone needs, and can provide it as far as Bots, events, graphics go. Especially since all those files already exist somewhere..

Lol 'troll god'. Although most trolls only pretend to be a dumb-ass you go the whole nine yards. Say no more.

Well with vague comments like that, I will have to say no more. OH WELL, at least you saved some of my dignity.

Someone really needs to take some initiative. I don't give a shit who owns the zone, I just want to play it again. SSCV Devastation has deathball in ?go deathball with green MG ships and settings if anyone wants to get a fix in the mean time.

The only way it would work is if metalgearctf.net was back up. A sub-forum here would be a ghost town IMO. Old players like myself would still frequently check out the old mgctf.net address and see if anything was going on, and with a few exceptions I doubt those same old players check here. Bottom line, a sub-forum wouldn't help revive it's population initially, but if something was started, it'd be worth trying.

haha I remember mg. I just stumbled back to the ss forums yesterday and discovered that audry was restarting the zone. I remember I was an idiot back when I played. It would be nice for it to restart, seeing that the community is still strong.
