A couple facebook quotes from a wise friend who spent a few years in Jordan as a missionary:

"Ideas are not destroyed by killing their creators but by providing better ideas."

"Usama Bin Ladin was an anachronism, a staunch anti-nationalist in an age of nationalisms. His movement was unsustainable regardless of his death."

"Let's keep in mind that it is not al-Qaeda and Bin Ladin who are currently killing NON-VIOLENT peaceful protesters in various countries of the Middle East, it is dictatorial regimes, many of whom are supported by the U.S. (Yemen, Bahrain). If Bin Ladin's anti-nationalism was anachronistic, so are monarchies."

I find it a little sick to celebrate the death of anyone. "Justice" should not be dealt out by the end of a gun...it makes us no better than the terrorists who deliver "justice" with a bomb...

It seems a very stupid operation. Killing him isn't going to change anything,

he has ceased to be relevant, and no doubt operations organised by him in the last 10 years are in progress now.

Would have been better to capture him, and stick him in guantanamo than put a bullet though his head,

just in terms of the intelligence you could have gained on future (an on going) operations.

I understand this sentiment, but at the same time, he was the leader of an enemy force. He never declared peace or truce or armistice. He was still at war with us. His death was fair according to the laws of war. He did not fight fair, but his death was fair.

;o

Besides, there are thousands of clones of him out in Arabia anyway.

Goldstein is dead? What are we going to hate during the two minute hate now?

They rushed at full speed to take the body and bury it at sea. The whole thing is a lie. If there is any argument to be had it's how much of this crap is true and what's the gains for who.

Osama is dead, it is all I have heard in the news for 2 days now, frankly I think its being blown way out of proportion.

Is it justice? I am not too sure for a few reasons:

1: Killing one man in a raid noes not make up for thousands dead

2: He was not rumored to mastermind behind 9/11 and subsequent attacks in the al quieda name

3: In the so war on terror many more innocent civilians have been killed then were killed in 9/11 and subsequent attacks

It is also clear that killing him will make no difference whatsoever to extreme views in the long term.

On the other hand I think he did deserve it, however much I am anti war on the whole.

I think what it allows is some sort of closure, not justice.

And like many others I would have preferred to see him tried in a fair court in a public trial, but I can also see how that was never going to be possible.

I think it's hardly justice, at best it's a war crime1 I'm not too worried about.

1) The actual shot-in-the-head, that is, not whatever our arabic friend did.
