Dr Brain Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 I didn't do search for a manual, but this briefly touches upon the subject for TI calculators: http://epsstore.ti.com/OA_HTML/csksxvm.jsp?nSetId=103110 1/2π (1/2pi for the ASCII impaired) springs to mind for convenience. I don't agree with it, but I know why they did it. You're not ever going to find a paper talking about it, because the rules are so clear. Multiplication and division have the same precedence, and are evaluate from left to right. To take it to absurdity, just because there's no paper talking about addition in the southern hemisphere of the earth doesn't mean it's different there. Freedom is the right to be wrong.
★ Dav Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 there probably is a paper on it somewhere, odds are though it is so old and widely accepted that it is never referenced anymore. SSCC Desert Storm OwnerSSforum Admin
★ Xog Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 (edited) Order of Operations (PEMDAS):ParenthesesExponentsMultiplicationDivisionAdditionSubtraction 6/2(1+2) 6/2(3) <== parenthases [1+2=3]6/6 <== Multiplication [2*3=6]1 <== Division [6/6=1] It's been a long time though, and that "division and multiplication have the same priority, so you must solve them from left to right" sounds very familiar and I could be wrong. It could very well be 9 if that's true. Edited May 7, 2011 by Xog Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/LooneyBandito Follow! http://www.twitter.com/LooneyBandito

Resol Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 The 'Multiplication' in 6/2(1+2) is not 2*3.. Its 6/2*3 So getting 6/6 is wrong. The equation ask what is '6 divided by 2' multiplied by '1 plus 2'. The answer is 9.

JoWie Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 (edited) I always hated that my calculator did the following:-2^2 = -4 And it was one of those calculators that had separate buttons for subtraction and negativity Edited May 18, 2011 by JoWie
