  1. 1. Should we continue calling ourselves SubSpace? or finally after 10yrs embrace our Continuum name?

"SubSpace? I didn't think that existed anymore?"

"Well, you have to use Continuum now to play it."

"oh, so it's continuum now?"

---

My other brother asked me just the other day if I still play Continuum. Yes, Continuum, not subspace. He is your average joe player, who just logged in to play, nothing more.

I was "either or" and just started the topic because it came up in game and was leaning more continuum because of newbs. But the more I think about it, the more I realize it is all about the newbs, and they aren't just total idiots. Your average computer user today is nothing like your average computer 5 years ago, or really even 2 years ago for that matter.

distinctive and descriptive

Notice the crucial conjunction. All of those names are distinctive, none are descriptive.

EDIT: polix, you posted just before me. Polix, why does the name matter? Were you confused by what he was talking about? Are you less likely to play because of it?

I tend to agree with Dr. Brain,

Deciding the "official name" doesn't matter - What matters most is getting the players interested enough (new ones) to make them stay.

Think of the things that made you addicted to Continuum/Subspace/Subspace Continuum.

Hi, I'm MikeTheNose and I approve of this ad.

  • A player is going to download and install it no matter what it's called.
  • A player is going to enter a zone and play (usually Trench), no matter what it's called.
  • That player will stick around if they like the game, and leave if they don't, no matter what it's called.
  • Only then, once the player has decided to stay, will there be any confusion about the name. At that point, we've already won, and it doesn't matter what it's called.

Sense a theme here? I do: It doesn't matter what it's called.

I disagree entirely a name is very important. You only have to look at the money spent on branding by large corporations. Tbe amount of money spent repeating the name over and over and over to you. Every new product name you see advertised has been thought though very carefully by the marketing guys, down to the design of the fonts and text of that brand. Its all designed to sell you an idea, that you are buying into. I challenge you to name me a successful product with a name that is not distinctive and descriptive.

For example there are really only 3 companies that make washing powder... "procter and gamble" and "unilever" and a 3d one can't rememeber

They advertise what is essentially the same product under many different brand names.

I suggest we keep both the "Continuum" AND "Subspace" brands

- Subspace is the brand for the older experiernced player who "knows" this is the "real" game

- Continuum for the young and smart player who knows better than the lazy vets

I would argue we need to think of a better name than subspace or continuum and add it to our list of brands :D

Well, I did first know it as Continuum, then found out later that it was called SS, I call it mostly Subspace now seems a bit more legit name for it. But most downloading is called Continuum..

Changing it again might put Subspace in a lost cause...?

Why not call it .....

Subspace: Continuum

Incorporate both names into the banner and headings on this website, AND also when the game launches ? :D

Or at least on the top for the 'name' where it currently says 'Continuum 0.40'

Ppl will keep calling it however they want to. But having both names shown will reduce confusion.

Businesses do this kind of thing too when they change names. For example, in Canada, when the office supply store "Business Depot" changed to "Staples" (as the parent company is known in the United States), the main signs were changed to "STAPLES", but next to it was also a small banner that showed its previous name "Business Depot" so customers knew it was still the same store and nothing had changed but the name.

Even the current forum name could be a bit confusing ..... You launch a game called 'Continuum', and then you go to the forum and all you see everywhere is 'Subspace' and 'SSGN' .....

soooooo ..........

Subspace: Continuum

:good:

btw, the poll currently doesnt give us the option for to vote for this COMBINED name ...... :unknw:

I like SubSpace: Continuum because it still identifies the game as SubSpace. The ": Continuum" part makes it look like a sequel or expansion pack or something along these lines, but we still know it's SubSpace, yet distinctly the Continuum version.

This is stupid.

The next client after Continuum will be called the new Subspace client, not the new Continuum client. There has never been any doubt of this.
