the_snake Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Just something i was pondering about while I was reading some development forums here.. It seems that two different people are working on two different standalone clients Discretion and Phoenix...... But it puzzles me how come no one is working on a flash based game that could connect to existing and future servers..A flash based game that could be incorporated into facebook as a game... Hell it can even be java or c++ or python.... they are all supported by facebook :S. I'm not sure of the complexity of things, ive never studied computer science/software engineering or made big programming projects, but it can't be that much more complicated than 2 different game clients.. :/ Just thinking about this because our community is slowly dwindling and stupid games like farmville and cityville got like 100M players, coz they are easily accessed via facebook and are simple..... ss is simple too compared to modern games -Snake Quote
Dr Brain Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Because flash couldn't connect to our existing servers, and it'd be too easy to cheat. Quote
L.C. Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 It seems that two different people are working on two different standalone clients Discretion and Phoenix......This is false. Quote

Hakaku Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Well, the statement itself isn't false, but I think what L.C. was trying to highlight was that Phoenix is designed as a completely separate game with some elements reminiscent of SubSpace (kind of like Cosmic Rift), whereas Discretion was created to supersede Continuum while still retaining compatibility. The Facebook idea was raised in the past, but this community as a whole lacks people with the skills, time and patience to bring about something new, yet similar onto the current playing field. Quote

PoLiX Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Rather than just coming out and saying it, LC is eluding to another client being worked on. Unless we find a way to move on without Priit, this game will die. It might die even if we get away from his control, but might as well try something new. Quote
Hakaku Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Ah, my bad. But if we tally up the number of game clients said to be "worked on", then we have at least 15 or so unfinished and abandoned variations. Quote

Sass Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 Oh God - the game is about dead now. Screw it. Who f'n cares anyhow. Quote

SpazTick Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 First off.. i don't do forums.. i hate them.. but i love SubSapce. So please forgive me for not posting here more, i have browsed these forms on several occasions looking at status of the next generation of SubSpace only to turn up failed project after failed project. With the depressing theme of this post above.. I'm guessing this will be a good time to let the cat out of the bag. I currently work at an (unnamed here) social network in northern California as a developer. As a side project, I have put a team together of top notch software engineers, 3d modeling and texturing artists... (and others). Subspace IS being resurrected, many long hard hours are being put into this project. Game play will be familiar to everyone who knows and loves this game, however its getting a little bit more then just a facelift. And yes.. due to new technology both just released and currently in development it will be available for web-based deployment.PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, xBox360 and PS3 are all possible deployment platforms as well, but lets worry about that when the time comes. That's all i can say for now... more information soon... Hope this post will lift your spirits. Have a great week, im off too bed. -B Quote
»Xog Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 When you can give more information, I'll let the word out over SubSpace Pirate Radio. Quote
Dr Brain Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 That's all i can say for now... more information soon... It's a rule of reporting in SS: if there are no screen shots, it didn't happen. I think you'll do better with generating excitement if you wait to post anything more until you can really show it off. Talking about hugely diverse platforms that haven't been implemented makes me think you have no idea about where this will go (and makes me sad). Quote
Kilo Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Two things.. "Resurrection" is a joke. Some zones might not be here that were a few years ago, but so what? I think "reinvigoration" might be the word you're looking for. The rest of us who play in zones that have a modicum of integrity haven't imploded or eroded and are far from it. THIS game will not survive if it's under the control of a single person or business. Original subspace lived when VIE died/let go, Continuum is now experiencing the problems of having a choke point authority person. Now people are actually trying to go back to how it was over a decade ago, and also probably ignoring the idea of backwards compatibility. You think you can "resurrect" Subspace that way? You don't know what Subspace is. You're trying to make Cosmic Rift 2. Quote
Cheese Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 did someone just use the word modicum Quote
L.C. Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 did someone just use the word modicumYes, it is the 43rd word of Kilo's post. And??? O_o Quote
Dr Brain Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 For your edification, it means a small amount. Iota is a good synonym. Quote

Good luck and looking forward to seeing it in action! Quote
PoLiX Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I agree that it sounds like Cosmic Rift 2.0 not some resurrection. A resurrection would be a new client that worked with what we have now. Quote
SpazTick Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) i do share some of the worries of the other posters in this thread when it comes to the realization of this project, however i encourage development and the will to do it above all. Good luck and looking forward to seeing it in action! Big,Thanks for the encouragement, i for one totally understand the optimism this community has about an updated version of SS. Once again... I'm just not a big forum guy because i despise the fanboy flaming that coincides with forums. However.. I do understand the reasoning behind it. SS was a game we all know and love and many of you have played since the beginning. I personally did not pick it up until around 1998. I was hooked on it for nearly the rest of my college experience, while friends were out drinking i was huddled over a keyboard in a dark room talking smack to those i would lay waste too. I also have been taunted by talks of a new game only to be let down. I can assure all of you of this.. a team has been put together, we are working on this project. The team consists of members who have worked at many prestigious companies from Symantec to Blizzard. This project is not our main source of income. This is a side project for us. The opportunity for me to facilitate the development of a game like this has never presented itself until recently, i am surrounded by great minds and brilliant developers. This was not a project i could do any justice to what-so-ever if i would have attempted to do it on my own. I will leave you all with this. This game will be MMO. It will be a top down space shooter.Physics will be very familiar to SS fans.Graphics & performance will be vastly improved.Security will be a MAJOR aspect. I'll introduce the team soon.Feedback welcome. Edited January 26, 2011 by Brady W. Quote
Dr Brain Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 You missed the fundamental part of SS in that list: individual run zones and more broadly, community driven content. Without that, it's Cosmic Rift 2, as many have said. Quote
L.C. Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 SubSpace isn't SubSpace if it isn't SubSpace. Quote
