Both computers connect through the same internet connection via a switch connected to a modem. Both have static IPs and I have firewalls disabled and the hyperspace ports (5005 - 5006) forwarded to the IP of the compuer I am using. Can someone help me? Is it just because my laptop isnt as good or do you think its a connection problem? I live in australia. Samapico Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Well, I'd say it would be hard for you to get a good ping from Australia, no matter what. The power of the machine shouldn't have any major effect on the ping, but it can change whether or not you get specced for "latency". I used to get specced for latency a lot because my CPU usage was spiking once in a while and the packets couldn't be processed properly. If you notice that your graphics are jumpy on your laptop once in a while, it could be the same thing. Mine was spiking every 10 minutes or so, and the whole thing froze for 1 or 2 seconds. Few seconds later I'd get specced. If you're using a software firewall other than windows' one, like ZoneAlarm or whatever, uninstall it and get rid of it. These things will add latency to everything, while being totally useless. Quote
L.C. Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Buy a router. There's no reason you shouldn't have a router between your network and your internet modem. And do what Samapico suggested. Edited January 12, 2011 by L.C. Quote

bluecrystals Posted January 12, 2011 Author Report Posted January 12, 2011 Why should I get a router? A network switch is fine if you know how to manually set IP addresses. Living in Australia does give me higher than usual latency, but if you read my OP you will see that I can play all zones fine on my desktop PC without ever getting specced. So I dont see how that can be the only problem. Quote
»Xog Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Go to Start -> Run and type cmd.exe or if you have win7 or vista, click Start and type cmd into the text field to open the command prompt.
