I was under the impression that you quit playing to be more productive.

And I'm under the impression that you consider drawing and playing games to be of equal productivity?

I posted this up here because if anyone else was in the same boat as me and playing games all day well maybe this can inspire them. Obviously not everyone *cough* oid *cough* cheese but if just one person does that it wasn't a waste.

I admire your principles and your artistic talent. However, I do consider drawing and playing games to be of equal productivity. I measure productivity by output. Video games are unproductive because at the end of the day, all you have is points and e-money. While drawing does yield more doodles, that's all you're going to have. Only you and your friends are going to appreciate those doodles, similarly to points and e-money. Inspiring people does have its merits, though. Even if it's only an attempt.

I see what you're getting at here. Maybe by definition you are correct in that either task is similarly "productive", however if I draw all day at the end of the day I've gotten better at drawing, I have some drawings to show people, and if they are well done almost anyone can appreciate them. If I play games all day at the end of the day all I have is more content in the game, I probably haven't really gotten much better, and the only people who will 'admire' the time spent are the ones playing the games (In this case I know 1 person IRL who plays subspace), and at that it's not really something to be proud of to begin with. When I look back at the drawings I've done, I can see how my style has changed or progressed, and reflect on it. Whatever I do in a game eventually amounts to nothing.

I think drawing is still better than playing games. Just ask a random outsider that if they had to decide being playing and drawing for something that is meaningful and productive, I'm sure 90% of them will say drawing will have more purpose than gaming (it can get you somewhere more so than gaming).

With that said, heres what I did on my free time last summer before I got super busy with my final year at university.

Clicky

(I still cant draw hands for the life of me, and prob would redo it cause its too skinny)

Lol, I need more practice X3

I've been using modules and everything I find in art galleries using some of their methods, repeating the step over and over and actually getting better in that area...

Yo Swift.

Just out of curiosity, how did you draw/colour?

Tablet work and then computer colour?

Or handdrawn, scan and then computer colour.

And Op: Gj. You're doing exactly what I'm doing right now, just that the stuff I come up with has to be used in a portfolio for uni. D:

I'll be honest and say the only piece that I DO like would be the husky.. Anime drawings just... aren't exactly the same.

hand sketch on tablet then use mouse over techniques (because my hands are shakey) in photoshop with pen tool to get smoother lines then colouring using shapes and brushes (as evidenced by the tail, u can see theres a shape layer ontop of the base layer for the shadow). I tried to get into illustrator, but cant achieve the same effects as easily with it, so sticking with photoshop

Right all those anime drawings were from way back, maybe 3-4 years ago. I'll probably never do an anime drawing again. Not into that stuff anymore. Although anime was an awesome part of my life!

Could I see some of your work Shuuuu? :p

Zipping a PNG will typically increase the overall size.

Zipping as in making it a .rar or specifically a winzip file? Where is the logic behind this anyways? It is my understanding that to compress something you just make patterns from its binary and use that to shorten it. Maybe I'm way off I don't know I've never really looked into it.

You can't compress something beyond its entropy. So taking a file that's as compressed as it can get (or close enough) and then zipping it will only add overhead instead of reducing file size.

PNGs use compression algorithms optimized for real world pictures, and zips use algorithms targeting files in general. This means that PNGs will typically do a better job than zips, since they know more about how pictures work. If you're willing to throw information away, you can reduce the file size even more. That's how JPEGs work.
