Should the human race be extinct?

We are thriving, granted our populations is "unnaturally" large but we have adapted to our world very well so my answer has to be no.

lol the context is pretty simple. L.C. and I were having a discussion about the state of the world and I've had this discussion with a few people recently and we came up with extinction as a possible solution.

 

As far as us adapting to our world very well I'd be inclined to disagree with that statement. Third world countries are a testament to that fact. And while we may have adapted "ok" to the world... the world hasn't been so fortunate to adapt to us. Therein lies another problem lol.

Third world countries develop based on adapting, actually. There are numerous evidences of third world countries fully establishing themselves as an economic power. Nature will always have an advantage over humanity, but it will never cause the human population to go extinct.

Oh I see, extinction as a way to undo human damage to the planet.

 

I think population is a major issue, simply put there are too many people on earth at the moment and the environment is paying the price.

 

Extinction is a bit far though, sensible population management (this is another discussion, here I am taking along the lines of making contraception more widespread, improving education...) and new green technologies are the answer IMHO.

I doubt it very much. Half the issue with our current way of living is the issue is not pressing enough. Devastation of rain-forest, burning of carbon fuels e.t.c are still both financially and environmentally viable in the short term. Sooner or later this will no longer be the case and we will be forced to increase the rate at which alternatives are made available.

 

Unfortunately modern society works in the short-medium rather then the long term, we all know that fixing these issues now will be better in the long run, but it will not work with economies and society functioning as it does now.

By should, I say yes. This is decided by the fact humans as a species take a lot more from the world then they give. It makes sense that something like this shouldn't live, as what it's taking can't last forever if it's not giving the equal amount in return. (Think of all natural resources we're depleting etc)

 

But on a more logical level, I highly doubt humans will ever go extinct, as up till now we haven't had a single threat, and we're at an exponential level of development in science and technology, only making that streak stronger and stronger.
