Are you looking for something like the phrase "In the know"? Or are you going more for the "Cadre of the basement dwellers"?

Both I suppose. When we communicate on these forums -- there's a sort of familiarity, even almost when you join a community you haven't been in before. It's common amongst gamers, but not just to gamers. Somewhat includes "the Internet" stereotype.

 

It's just different when I put my mom or someone who isn't very much into the internet or computers as far as [social] involvement. My younger brother and my cousins have the same familiarity, but those are the only people I know in real life who "understand" this 'realm'.

 

It's almost like.. we the internet.. the way we communicate on the internet (I am excluding voice comm because I have too little experience in that), at a very subtle and subconscious level, have a similarity, or a pattern. Maybe this includes similar experiences too.

If you spend enough time on the computer as other people do by doing similar things then you begin to sense some sort of camaraderie. Same as if you hang out with a certain group of people IRL you form a relationship.

 

Except on the internet it's easy to choose friends with similar interests because they usually congregate in a specific area.

I think this is pretty accurate.

 

Same with many jobs/sports IRL as well I tend to find.
