L.C. Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 [15:55] Me: You know how if you had someone you know in the realworld... who wasn't a gamer like you and me and "of the Internet stereotype"[15:55] Me: and you wanted to communicate to them through chat[15:55] Me: and you did[15:55] Me: you know how that feels ....[15:55] Me: mmm say[15:55] Me: awkwardly different?[15:56] Me: but when you chat with me, or someone else "of the Internet," we're all familiar, right?[15:56] Friend: I sort of know that feeling.. but I have plenty of hobbies so maybe not as awkward as yours Quote
Dr Brain Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Are you looking for something like the phrase "In the know"? Or are you going more for the "Cadre of the basement dwellers"? Quote
L.C. Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 Both I suppose. When we communicate on these forums -- there's a sort of familiarity, even almost when you join a community you haven't been in before. It's common amongst gamers, but not just to gamers. Somewhat includes "the Internet" stereotype. It's just different when I put my mom or someone who isn't very much into the internet or computers as far as [social] involvement. My younger brother and my cousins have the same familiarity, but those are the only people I know in real life who "understand" this 'realm'. It's almost like.. we the internet.. the way we communicate on the internet (I am excluding voice comm because I have too little experience in that), at a very subtle and subconscious level, have a similarity, or a pattern. Maybe this includes similar experiences too. Quote
Yupa Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Yup. World gets smaller, more distinct cultures die. Quote
»Purge Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 If you spend enough time on the computer as other people do by doing similar things then you begin to sense some sort of camaraderie. Same as if you hang out with a certain group of people IRL you form a relationship. Except on the internet it's easy to choose friends with similar interests because they usually congregate in a specific area. Quote

Same with many jobs/sports IRL as well I tend to find. Quote

»Xog Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 Anyone else think of Dr. Brain as the old guy on the block sitting in his rocking chair shouting "You pesky kids!" while shaking his cane as they pass by? Quote
Dav Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 give the man some credit, his cane is at the very least wifi enabled and able to script python via voice commands Actually I want one of those! Quote
Dr Brain Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Its my goal in life to be that guy. Glad to see I'm well on my way. Quote
