That's because this

is so much cooler than this

Don't worry, it only took me 5 minutes to produce in MSPaint.

they are pretty cool, but useless for 99% of people.

I have had the joyof using very powerful lasers and arc lamps in the past, but these are almost always built into a larger peice of equipment and you don't actually see them.

I've been thinking more about this (not in terms of buying one, because for one I don't have money, and two I don't think I'd use it):

This could be used in Iraq/Afghanistan/war-in-general. It would be REALLY bad if the Taliban and insurgents got ahold of these. D:

I bet you could quickly clear houses with a couple 1W lasers and some helmets with $150+ protective visors.

And then snipers ... just imagine the horror they could experience if a soldier shined it in the right direction. (Probably wouldn't even have to try very hard on the part of aiming to get the job done.)

Someone could build a minigun with 8+ pipes of 1W lasers.

Someone could make a ring that they wear on their body -- or maybe composed or multiple rings. Each ring could have a laser pointing away from the person, and have 8+ 1W lasers. Each ring would rotate in different directions/speeds.

Then imagine the potential chaos that could ensue in various places around the world ... like in New York, or Afghanistan, or Africa, or a FIFA World Cup soccer game, or a museum of glass, or a museum/place of jewelry and diamonds, or in prison (if you could manage to sneak one in), or in bathrooms of mirror-frenzy, or a swimming pool/center, or against a riot, or against anti-riot/SWAT (of course you could expect being shot at, but if you aimed carefully and had some luck on your side...), or in places like Korea/China when there are protests, or one of those nudist people that run out onto the field during a soccer game could use one of these 1W lasers to prolong their attention, or use in a [high-speed?] pursuit, or ...

Someone could even mod one of these onto a paintball sentry turret and have it activate the laser when it sights and engages at a target.

It's not a ray gun you know.

According to someone at HardForum who answers my question about the width of the beam:

It's 1.5mm wide at the exit point of the laser and expands around 1.5mm for every additional meter. The NOHD of this laser is 211 meters (692 feet)' date=' which means that anything closer can blind you (although, realistically, you could probably still be blinded by prolong exposure at further distances.) The problem is that, if I did my math right, at 211 meters the width of the beam is around 1 foot. So really you would only need to shine the laser at a person's face and they would have serious issues. You wouldn't even need to aim for the eye.[/quote']

If you are doubting the power of the laser, just go do some research (perhaps in laser enthusiast forums).

At 211 meters, your blink reflex would probably save you. 1W over 0.785ft^2 isn't much power. Let's say a single eye is a 1in diameter circle (this is being generous). Its surface area is then 0.785in^2. Given that the dispersion is uniform, that area sees only about 7mW at 211m.

According to replies following the quote at HardForum, 1.5mm per meter is probably way too high. :p

Anyway, I'm more interested in seeing actual videos and pictures of this in use. =D Then we can get a better idea of how powerful this is.

Which is still quite enough to blind you, seeing as even 1mW lasers can be dangerous.

But you're right that it's probably not instantaneous

Hey thanks for the find, I'm going to try to get my hands on one of these if they are actually what they are rated as. I've heard that a lot of Wicked Lasers' lasers are TEM10 or TEM20. Also It seems unlikely that it's actually 1W and outputs something near 1000mW. But, time will tell, this looks really awesome either way.
