There's something that really bothers me about this thread. Why is it that members of the council did everything they could to dissuade the revival and development of other zones, such as Alpha West, but yet, it's perfectly ok to have DSB branched off?

Nowhere was it said the name Death Star Battle could be used.

BattleZone SVS (Alpha Map/Settings) was authorize and given SSC access, but they didn't want to do it without the name. Rebel Star Battle isn't Death Star Battle.

On top of that, Alpha was a dead zone, where this is a zone where there is quite a few active players. There could even be another Star Wars and Star Wars Realm exception made here. Never know.

It's all just waiting and watching for most of us.

Lads,

You are free to discuss what was announced on Sunday. I for one encourage it. But

in the present climate nothing good will come of it. Everyone needs to settle down and

take a deep breath.

However, I will not tolerate such nonsense as mutiny, a new zone or the like threads.

They will be moved, not removed. Failure to ignore this call will result in forum accounts

being suspended.

Hoch and SSC have been pretty clear about their stance in this situation.

Right now we can only wait and see how things unfold.

Measures are being taken by the appropriate people within the DSB community.

All we can say for sure is that DSB won't vanish from SubSpace altogether as Hoch wants it to.

"At some point we all have to face reality. It is a cold reality and I do not like it as much as the next guy."

I swear, this is straight out of FFX. The big bad wants to end the world so there's no more suffering. I suppose it's logically sound, but it's still pretty stupid.

Look, I've seen enough bad jRPGs and animu to know exactly how this will end if you guys don't do something about this now (Hint: The only way to get the good end is with the emergence of four heroes/warriors of light/blue-haired teenagers with super powers and/or giant robots. Oh, and lots of level grinding). I've also a history of accurately predicting how subspace drama ends. My advice? Someone step in and forcefully hand the zone off before it's too late.

Was in spec tonite in DSB,and during the conversation the statement was made that Death Star Battle was copyrighted. Therefore any clones or copy zones could possibly and or actually be, sued by the current owner. After a little bit of research I found this to be a accurate statement. However it is owned by Lucas Arts lmt.Any likeness or terminology is EXCLUSIVELY owned by George Lucas. This also includes any fictional or non-fictional characters, and by the looks of it,it's all inclusive. It also expressly forbids usage of any kind without his prior consent. The term "Death Star" is one of these aforementioned licensed names.

I find it hard to believe that it would come to this.

Is there any chance of someone coming forth and acting as a mediator between Hoch and the DSB Players?

All I can see Hoch even potentially having legal ownership over is the copyright on DSB's config files and maps, and I doubt he even has that. As you note, the phrase "Death Star Battle" itself is already an infringement on Lucasarts's trademark, so Hoch would have a hell of a time suing to protect it.

I agree with Delic on this. DSB is a popular zone and a large part of the community.

I can understand wanting to end things on a high but this will be a huge blow to the game. I worry that when it goes offline many players will just quit rather then find a new zone.

There are people more then willing to host and run the zone and fresh leadership isn't always a bad thing.

Given the circumstances a shutdown seems absolutely senseless.

Posted
This is just sad. There are at least hundreds of players who like to play in DSB occasionally, some of them very actively. Then this one (1) guy gets a shutdown idea, totally against what everyone else in the community want but he puts himself above everything. I haven't seen anyone fully support him and I don't see why anyone would. Not even the DSB staff members have voiced any support for him in this one. Too bad the torch was passed on to him when the old sysops left, he has no intention to do the same.

Those in power are usually those who desire it most, and those who desire it most are usually those who abuse it. This applies to computer game moderators/sysops more than in most areas of life.

Hoch thinks only his opinion matters. He thinks he alone has the right and responsibility as "owner" (leader).

He's drunk on his own importance and eminence.

I will provide any funds/technical assistance (website/server hosting) necessary to secure the future of DSB.

If any of these things are needed, get in touch.

One thing is 100% certain, there WILL be at least a non-SSC clone of DSB. Someone will either get ahold of settings, or reverse-engineer them.

Whether or not the clone can get on the biller is a whole other concern...

Posted
Hmm, I think I might just come outta retirement and reverse-engineer them myself, just to rage this fag. Ive always been pro at it. Ill give it a try tomorrow, who wants to provide me with a test zone?

I have begun a project currently labeled Rebel Star Battle (RSB). RSB will restore CLASSIC DSB, and setup a true PLAYER RAN COUNCIL that will decide the path forward from that point. There are many long time players and several former staff members supporting of this effort. However, there are many unknown variables at this point, and another clone project that already has all the files needed to simply move the zone. RSB may never become a reality, but it will continue despite the other efforts going on. What should you as a player think of this? I have no idea. I'm just sitting in limbo like everyone else atm.

The Ghost Ship, being the original owner of Death Star Battle*, already has the classic Death Star Battle files.

*When Baudchaser was around, he summoned The Ghost Ship to fix the 0-player zone. Later, he gave the zone to The Ghost Ship altogether. The Ghost Ship was the one who made Death Star Battle what it mostly is today (without him, the zone would most likely be non-existent). Sure, lots of work and development has occurred since TGS' time, but that wouldn't have been if it weren't for him. The core foundation, which includes the map and settings, is a direct result of The Ghost Ship's responsibility initially handed down by Baudchaser. He is also the one who brought it out from the grave of being a playerless zone to the hundreds (no wonder he was later summoned yet again [with ownership] and given to take on Trench Wars).

If you get to know The Ghost Ship, you will also realize his motivations (where he comes from) are genuine.

Additionally, several of Death Star Battle's developers have its files, bots, and so forth.

FYI, I am not here to argue history. If you want to find out history, I suggest you execute the steps and philosophies of Critical Thinking for yourself. If you genuinely, honestly, and selflessly want to find something out, then the chances are you will (or be very close to the truth). The moment your research becomes insincere and/or for some personal and/or political gain, your output is fallible. Also, you cannot build off of invalid theories, assumptions, gossip, etcetera. Good luck! =)

so far, -3- people have offered full hosting.

also, players have all the arena map data sitting in their collective zone folders.

the only thing needed to completely back up DSB is -1- sysop to grab all the config files for the arenas.

only one.

i dont play DSB, is there another sysop?

Well, if Hoch is an asshole and nobody can/will do anything about it, wouldn't as-soon-as-possible be a good time to start trying to reproduce the current DSB settings?

No ones gotta reproduce them. Lots of people have them.

No need to run it into the ground so quickly, sir!

Been tried before I assume, perhaps if its more a republic then a democracy, and the right people fill the seats.

Yeah, that will work right? LOL
