Guest kid Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Hi I am having a problem with connecting to the internet with Continuum .40. I am using a Dell XPS laptop computer, I can connect fine to the internet with other programs like mozilla, surf the web and check email, but continuum will not connect. I do not know what the problem is, i un-istalled and installed the program, I made the program an exception in my firewall to give it internet access. And i just can't figure out why in the world i cannot play on my laptop. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas or solutions to this problem... -Thank You
Dav Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 what happens if you shut down your firewall completly? Is it home or a work/school network you are tring to connect on?
Samapico Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Have you updated your zones list? Click the 'Zones' button, and change the directory servers to the following:ssdir.playsubspace.com, sscentral.sscuservers.net, ds1.krslynx.com, ds1.hlrse.net, sscentral.com, dirserver.ssnecentral.net Then hit download
Guest kid Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 It is a personal laptop computer and a home wireless network. At the moment I do have the firewall completely off. But when I click on my firewall it says its on, while the settings say its off. So there may be some time difference between when it actually goes off, even though on the settings i have turned it off. I copy and pasted the zones list you provided, (hope commas don't cause any trouble) and nothing happened. I got the same response "could not refresh zone list, check zone addresses and make sure you are connected to the internet" This is really starting to get aggravating for the fact that i cannot play, but also for the fact that i can't figure out the problem. and i don't wanna change all the settings on my laptop and mess it up trying to fix it...continuum is a simple program so i don't know why a FIREWALL would even block it, plus its supposed to prompt me when blocking a program and it has not done that. Either way, i don't know what the problem is... -kid
L.C. Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Continuum virtually utilizes the entire port range from 1 to 65535. In other words, if you have your laptop connected to a Watchguard Firebox (which has all ports blocked by default), you would be unable to connect to any zone, be unable to attain fresh zone listings, and would see all zones as offline/red. Then, in this scenario, you would have to forward the zone ports for the zones (in specific) that you want to connect to and be able to play in. You say you are connecting to the internet via wireless. Is this through a wireless router or something through Alltel/a mobile carrier? If a wireless router, then I will assume you either have (1) a LAN network or (2) that router is connected to your modem from which you receive your internet. In the case of #1, you need to locate the router that is connected to your modem. Please report back its brand and model. Run a tracert on one of the zones such as SSCU Trench Wars with at least 100 cycles. Then report the log back here. From my perspective: something is blocking the ports necessary for Continuum to contact one of the zones in your list and/or directory servers. It is either (1) Windows Firewall or (2) wired/wireless router that is connected to modem. That's where I would be looking.
Guest kid Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Im connected to the internet through a wireless router which is connected to a motorola cable modem.the router name is Linksys WRT 300N Wireless-N Broadband Router. Exactly what is written on the router. I am using a Windows Firewall, but like i said before, i made Continuum an exception so connection between my computer and the program should be granted. I did a trace of Trench wars waited 100 cycles but the trace.txt file woun't show up as i tried to attach it. The ave/min/max ping from the 16 hosts were anywhere from 10-60ms. I did however have 100% loss on three hosts:ae-41-99.car1.Washington1.Level3.netge2-2.core1.dca2.hopone.netvl3.msfc1.distb2.dca2.hopone.net -kid
Samapico Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 The trace goes through, but not the connection... that can only be a blocked port somewhere between you and the server. It's probably in your router.. or you can try disabling Windows Firewall... Even if you made it an exception, it's possible it doesn't open up all the ports that are used.
Guest kid Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 ok so i downloaded continuum on my girlfriends laptop to see if it was the network or my laptop. The game worked perfectly fine on her laptop, connection was good. So it is not a network or a router problem, just the settings on my laptop, the only thing i can think of is that damn Windows Firewall. I did turn it off for the firewall for the time being but for some reason when i click on my firewall it says its ON even though the settings say its off. So im gona check that out and see if can't completely shut it down... -kid
