I don't follow the issue like I used to but I do know Russia is becoming much closer to America, and I would therefore expect them to cease previous alliances if it makes their new friend happy. If McCain had won the election then Russia would still be opposing sanctions.

I think Russia just want's to make the International Community happy by making a statement about possible sanctions. They also gain some leverage points when they want to discuss their concerns about our missile defense plans. It's not like we pressured them into siding with us on the Iran issue like we did with Turkey. Read some wikileaks cables about it.

 

Smells like another war to me though. I believe that Israel is likely to feel forced to launch a strike if international pressure doesn't halt Iran's quest for nuclear power (and it wont) and then all hell will break loose.
