Like most other operating systems using binary prefixes, Ubuntu currently represents 1 kB (kilobyte) as 1024 bytes (base-2). But starting with 10.10, a switch to SI prefixes (base-10) will denote 1 kB as 1000 bytes, 1 MB as 1000 kB, 1 GB as 1000 MB, and so on." Quote
»Purge Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Why the heck would they do that? Besides easier calculations and shorthands. Quote
BDwinsAlt Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 There should definitely be an option for how you want to do be displayed. I don't like base 10 though. Quote
whalz Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 SIMPLICITY! however much i dont care, if they simplify it.. at least .. well at least its simpler perhaps with this update, it will spur more of the same, bringing the basics all simpler and leaving room for the advanced and unknown! progress at its finest right here Quote
Samapico Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 The thing is it will be much more confusing.... Insert your USB thumb drive in one machine, you get X / 1.024^3 GBs, then insert it in your ubuntu machine, and you have X GBs... And all the files will have different file size than expected. It could almost be an April's Fool. But to be honest, I don't care about Linux Quote
MikeTheNose Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Anyone who uses Ubuntu SHOULD understand file sizes. Quote
BDwinsAlt Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 Anyone who uses Ubuntu SHOULD understand file sizes.Dell ships it out with certain computers now, so somebody may want to try Ubuntu instead of Windows. It's really stupid-friendly for a Linux distro. Quote
