»Purge Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Ah, I'm using 3G mobile broadband on my PC as well, but it's terrible at around 384 Kbps. Quote
L.C. Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Also, what kind of latency do you guys get on your cell phones? :? Did anyone bother checking this? 384 KbpsThat is 48 KB/s. More than enough for Subspace. And if you have low latency, it's overkill for Subspace (the higher the latency, the more the purpose of your speed is defeated in terms of Subspace). »Purge Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Well, that's the advertised speed. It actually runs at about 56 Kbps after 2 weeks into the billing cycle. They call that their "Fair User Policy". Quote
Samapico Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 56kbps... few years ago, most SS players were using this on their PC.SS was made with 28kbps (or maybe even 14k?) modems in mind; a few somewhat-laggy people on their phones wouldn't cause much trouble. If this topic is about science: yay Quote
Audry Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Well i do use my cell phone internet sometimes to play... and im not that much laggy Quote

If this topic is about science: yay I wouldnt be wanting to mix the phone players too much with PC players, because of the screen resolution differences, they would find it pretty challenging. My idea would be to have a separate zone for phone players (one with a low screen resolution limit), but it would still be possible to play the main zones if you really wanted to. Subgame2 compatibility is the aim here. Quote
BDwinsAlt Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Hmm, what if they don't have a qwerty keyboard on their phone? I think a chat client for each phone would be nice. I made one for my phone, but I know it won't run on every phone. I don't see a client being possible on a cell phone. It would be hard to play anyway. Now if you could spec in a zone like hyperspace and chat, that would be cool. Quote

They call that their "Fair User Policy".That's still overkill. To play Subspace like in old times, you need a download and upload speed of 2 to 3 KB/s and a latency between 200 to 300 milliseconds. As long as you get a latency below 230ms,as long as you get a speed of 4 KB/s or higher, that's practically overkill for Subspace. (The better the stats are in comparison to dialup; if you get dialup speeds, it's only better in that you have a constant stable connection.) Subgame2 compatibility is the aim here.Sweet! How do you intend to bring this about if you allow them to play? ie. Wormhole physics Quote
»Purge Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Not sure about "overkill", as I can't enter any zones. My ping is about 380ms to each SSC zone with some latency. Oh, forgot to mention I'm living in Sri Lanka. If you want the equivalent speed of 56Kbps connecting from here to the closest SSC server, it's probably around 8Kbps (guesstimation). Quote

»Purge Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 I'm talking about my computer... But, yes, all I'm limited to is chatting. Quote
Nokia Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 i played ss over EDGE last week. bit high ping but no problem rly besides not being able to pick up balls Quote
rootbear75 Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Well i do use my cell phone internet sometimes to play... and im not that much laggy I do that too Hmm, what if they don't have a qwerty keyboard on their phone? That way you can use any IRC client on any phone to connect to it.That's what i do right now. Quote
»D1st0rt Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 OR use Jowie's chatnet script and then any IRC client on w/e phone you are using.I use ccc over ssh but to each his own I guess. Quote
