With the possibilities of ASSS, has it been discussed yet, about making one superzone? When I say superzone, I mean all the current zones ran on an ASSS server, are combined to one zone. Inside the zone you can look at the list of arenas, and each arena is its own zone? like.. ?go hyperspace or ?go hsDuel

I think it would be interesting.. And I'm pretty sure BanG and mod/smod/sysop powers can be edited so they only work in certain arenas. I think it would bring more people to explore the different types of "zones" that are around now.. it would change the community a bit, and add more variation.

Thoughts?

Better than this would be a way to link up zones rather than forming one superzone (something that Snrrrub knows how to do but won't share with anyone). The problem with forming one superzone is that different zones rely on different modules. Instability in one module would bring the entire thing down, a risk that can be only multiplied the more modules you load up.

In other words, having all zones under one instance would be the worst for reliability and redundancy, as you have one single point of failure.

That is, unless you clustered that instance onto multiple hosts of different locations or something.

I'd rather run asss through multiple instances, anyway.

I think Xog was after something more like the ap_multipub module, or the idea of a single zone hosting multiple sub-zones kind of like my Algol idea.

Bottom line, there aren't enough zones devving, the zones that are devving may as well go for their own zone, and it's hard to say who owns what. Also, generally people are too worried about their zone being the best, and seem to think that people are too stupid to look for other zones. (attack at no advertising rule in general, there).

erm, didn't snrrrub opensource a module like that

Hmm, I suppose I can see why one superzone that contains all the zones as arenas could be set up for failure. In Trenchwars, EG is connected somehow. I'm not sure how it works but you can type ?go ExtremeGames and you'll appear in EG pub from trenchwars. It doesn't work for other zones though.

Is there a way to have this type of feature for ASSS zones, but have a bot have the arena open 24/7 so that it appears on the list of arenas when you esc+a or ?arena ?

The way I imagine it would be I can go to the Hyperspace zone, look at the list of arenas, and see the list of zones instead of quitting the game. It'd make for faster travel between zones, and people might be inclined to try out different zones more often, increasing populations now and then.

To the OP: There are massive political and massive technical problems with such a thing, but in theory it could be done with massive modifications to both the technical systems and the political systems. The latter will probably never happen.

Switching zones in-game will almost certainly be possible in the future.. I don't see a solution right now though.

I'm not sure why TW and EG have a bridge or how they do it, maybe they are hosted on the same machine and use a modified subgame.

I have a hunch that only the client is capable of 'zone redirecting', as it doesn't sound like something my as3 server could possibly (even with personal modifications) control. The server would have to say "You're no longer connected to 273.244.23.1:3000, you are now connected to 298.332.13.1:5000" and I don't think that's possible.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm, you're right, Snrrrub did release a patch + peer module to get it working on ASSS. Thanks for pointing that out. I just remember seeing him test it out with Chaos, since the eventual plan was to give a way for Subgame zones to link up with ASSS counterparts, but I hadn't heard of any of it since.

Also, the TW-EG bridge isn't a bridge at all. It's nothing more than a bot using the *sendto command, which isn't implemented in ASSS, but is possible.

Didn't one of the older versions of Catid's SSBilling2 have a command that could reconnect you to specified zone? :( I'm sure SSC could implement something like this.
