»Xog Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) here's a video of lynx, who you mentioned, doing everything. in the description is a link to the steps as well if you can't follow along also, the comments have a lot of solutions Edited February 4, 2010 by Xog Quote
»Lynx Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 I've said I'd be happy to re-write the walk troughs to put them on GetContinuum.com - but the admins of the site (not sure who) are no longer active. If your friend has any issues with the walk trhoughs I've made on my site (they're not great) then tell him to make a post under feedback and support here. Quote
Dr Brain Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 I gave Continuum a try on Sun's free version of VirtualBox, with the DirectX extensions enabled, and it works quite acceptably. I was able to get a FPS of between 120 and 150 while flying around and shooting in Hyperspace. That's slightly less than I get running Continuum on Wine, but it's a helluva lot easier to setup with VirtualBox than Wine. I was running this on Gentoo Linux, but presumably the same thing could be done on a Mac. Quote

The same thing can be done with either Parallels/Virtual Box or whatever your favorite flavor of virtual machine is. The wine setup is very easy too, but perhaps not so easy for your average mac user. It's just a matter of downloading Mac Ports (an OS X package manager), downloading a few packages then doing the usual steps of patching and compiling wine. It doesn't run as well on OS X as it does on Linux though (because X-Code 3.x has issues compiling 8/16-bit code). Quote

He's mostly worried about the use of the sudo. »Lynx Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 It took me a while at first as I was using Darwine - which is unsupported. I had to do a lot of external code for even the menu to run but running it through standard Wine took me a couple hours to get running smoothly. Anywho, I'll explain that sudo step: $ sudo port install bison ftgl libpng xrender fontconfig freetype xorg port install refers to Mac Ports, which is a package manager for OS X, similar to aptitude (apt-get) on Debian, pacman on Arch or RPM on RedHat. All of the above will require sudo, as the files database needs to be unlocked (which is outside of the normal user permission level), and various system files will need to be written to etcetera. Click any of the following for more information about what you're installing. You can take my word for it that none of the below will compromise your system or any of your files, and I've not had any complaints in the 50 or so e-mails that I've replied to regarding Continuum on OS X via Wine. That doesn't include the youtube responses, and the in-game help I've provided. BisonFTGLlibpngXRenderfontconfigfreetypeXOrg If he's still unsure, I am also available on MSN: krslynx gmail or AIM: krslynx Quote
