Due to recent issues with ssdir.playsubspace.com, and sscentral.sscuservers.net being down for quite some time now, I decided to setup a directory server on SSCentral.com.

The list is very limited right now, but I have contacted a few zone sysops to add sscentral.com to the directory line of their server.ini. So if your zone isn't listed, or a zone you frequent, go ahead and add it or ask one of the sysops to please add it.

For sysops - *s*Directory:IP:sscentral.com,ssdir.playsubspace.com,sscentral.sscuservers.net

And then *recycle

And for those interested in stats, they update every 15mins @ http://www.sscentral.com/stats/.

Thanks and Enjoy!

Both.

Manual in the sense that the zones in the list may or may not have sscentral.com in their [Directory]IP=, and mirroring in that it will check a list of directory servers for zone lists, filter out duplicates, and add it to its own list.

EDIT: I would say that sscentral.com and ds1.krslynx.com could be considered as stable (and ssdir once doc resolves his server issues), and ds1.hlrse.net as a secondary/backup.

EDIT2: At the moment, none of the three currently-online directory servers have a large list. By "default", all zones publish themselves to Priit's address (forgot what it was), and this directory server is offline. Then, I think the way ssdir worked was that it would cache its listing for x amount of time or indefinitely (as coming across offline zones in ssdir's list was not uncommon) - resulting in a larger list. Unfortunately, ssdir is also offline.

I think the council should make a mandate either encouraging or requiring each SSC host to also run a directory server (does not matter which software they use) for the sake of redundancy. :X

I plan on going around to each and every zone sometime to make sure their sysops/owner updates their [Directory]IP= with the latest + Priit's.

Don't be so quick to say something is "stable" when it hasn't proved itself. Let time be the judge. Directory servers have come and gone; the majority never living up to their initial advertisements.

Should be:

*s*Directory:IP:sscentral.com,sscentral.sscuservers.net,ssdir.playsubspace.com,ds1.krslynx.com,nanavati.net,ds1.hlrse.net,hlrse.net

EDIT: IPB is being really weird and randomly adding a space ^^

Well I apologize, you are right. Amidst my own excitements I have unintentionally allowed myself to become a bit hasty. Ultimately, this game has no stable directory server (or at least has not had one for quite a while). Edited by L.C.

Nowhere am I saying it is a replacement. But I will do everything in my power to keep it up and running as long as possible.

It uses so little resources on the server I dunno why I didn't set it up before. Might let TT know how I did it so he could set one up also. The only thing I don't get though... is zones have added it to their directory, but it isn't adding them...

And it'd seem SSCU/SSCX are firewalled from other dir servers.

Central gets round this restriction by allowing the manual addition of zones from a txt file.

if you give me a list of all the firewalled zones (i think i have the 5 main ones), i will add them to PSS's startup.txt

Hmm, just noticed 17th Parallel's description has an ugly double quote at the end ô.o "

(not a bug on your side, just to make it clear blum.gif It's really the description that is like that)

Even though that pretty much defeats the purpose of having directory servers in the first place...

dynamic updates do override the static settings, so if for some reason, updates start coming in from the firewalled servers, they take presidence

Turning it on. Guess our DC had a power outage. Dunno. I didn't notice anything, but I don't get home til ~1700 PST.

Back online and getting updates from zones.

Think I am either going to setup a cron job to check occasionally that the directory server is running, or give some of the other admins access to restart it. Maybe both...

Or use the script i provided for LC, which auto restarts it when it crashes blum.gif

(because ssdir seems to crash randomly sometimes...i have this script -_-)
