PoLiX Posted January 23, 2010 Report Posted January 23, 2010 For years we have made lame advertisement videos, minor attempts at greatness, but none have ever captured SubSpace itself. I was laying in bed last night, had been working on a video with a friend of mine helping him with some stuff for school, and was still thinking bout ideas for it. Had the music channel on tv and Breaking Benjamin's Blow Me Away came on. Reminded me of the old SS Video I was working on like my x-mas video I did a few years ago. I was thinkin bout the ss intro, and hundreds of ships fighting, etc. The downside to that video, though awesome, its 3D... we're 2d... Then the idea struck me... What if we got 100+ people in 1 zone, in 1 arena, some basic settings, simple map, and just had them dogfighting it out. Yes, a very hard feat... unless TW is down to help. In that, we have atleast 100 players already in there, and it is just bringing more in from the rest of SS. I dunno. Just an idea... and if people are willing to go for it and help, I think with some simple video editing, music, and the right graphics, we could really make something worth... showing regularly. Again, just a late night idea I thought I'd share. Quote
»Xog Posted January 23, 2010 Report Posted January 23, 2010 I 100% support this idea and think it would be freaking amazing. Quote
L.C. Posted January 23, 2010 Report Posted January 23, 2010 (edited) I support this idea. It has happened before already though. Remember when Continuum v0.37/38 was released and the Subgame2 updates haven't been distributed yet? There was only one [temporary] zone with support for the new v0.37/38, and that zone was loaded with 600 to 900 players. Each arena at least had 100 active players in it. The entire map literally had players EVERYWHERE! It is one of my best and most favorite memories ... there wasn't any lag either and it was fully playable as I remember. =D EDIT: Just FYI, Subgame2 supports a maximum of 250 players per arena (public and private) and 1024 players for the entire zone. This can be done straight out of the box on default configurations. However, you would definitely need to get a server with the bandwidth for such job, and may have to make some minor latency optimizations in server.ini and server.cfg. I would recommend disabling flags, powerball, ... If you want to accomplish this on ASSS, ASSS needs to be thoroughly tested for its capabilities. I could not get ASSS up to a 500 player count very easily on just plain MERVBot in spectator mode w/o plugins -- unloading modules was definitely necessary. My Subgame2 tests include being connected to a billing server, whereas my ASSS tests did not and are also incomplete in testing. Edited January 23, 2010 by L.C. Quote

»Lynx Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 It might not be a bad idea to use higher quality explosions etc, perhaps a Trench Wars or Extreme Games event. Also, you could use a fleet of AI bots, and as many real players as possible. Quote
PoLiX Posted January 24, 2010 Author Report Posted January 24, 2010 Real players. Want this legit. Thinking of using an old friend's modified SVS+EG sets. If he still has them. Quote
Acer Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 I'm down, and I'm currently getting Vegas pro 9 :/ And also I was thinking about doing this earlier today while watching the videos at SSO. Quote

Also, you could use a fleet of AI bots, and as many real players as possible.Just use original graphics. And I do not think the AI bots would work out very well. They are not compatible with doors, extra tiles, or wormholes. And, depending on the number of bot spawns being hosted, would use an extraordinary amount of bandwidth and resources compared to a regular player. (Assuming Bjorn's AI would be elected for usage.) I have a registered copy of Fraps and a high-end machine I could use for recording raw footage (note: I would disable chat, radar, GUI and messages, and use a high resolution). Then I could send the raw footage to whoever as 100mb RAR parts on DVDs to whomever. PS. Find multiple people to do recording of footage. EDIT: I also propose, whoever be setting up the zone, cap the maximum players in the entire zone to 250 and set the arena maximum to 250, and disable subarenas (ArenaMode=0). It might not be a bad idea to use higher quality explosions etc, perhaps a Trench Wars or Extreme Games event.All-the-high-pop.-zones event. EDIT2: When would this all occur? I would prefer this at least be on a Friday, and definitely not around finals time. Edited January 24, 2010 by L.C. Quote
aquarius Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 EDIT: I also propose, whoever be setting up the zoneI imagine this will take place within Trench Wars. Quote
Diwa Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 (edited) I'll be watching this thread carefully.... I'm totally down for getting my ass kicked by a hundred different people..... Would it be SVS or something... different...? It would be cool if it were SVS. I only skimmed the thread, sorry if this was already mentioned. I would also like to get my hands on any video that gets recorded at this event. Maybe do something with my little teaser video thing finally. Heh, I was just checking the videos on SSO. The one I made is up there... COOL Edited January 24, 2010 by Diwa Quote
»jabjabjab Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Im still trying to get those models from juan, if he can find them.. :/ Quote
Samapico Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Yeah... would definitely be great to have an awesome gameplay video, and I'm sure someone skilled could make some nice montage/editing with that footage and the original subspace intro... IMO the video would have to show the different settings possible with SS. Perhaps most of the video would show a bunch of people using SVS-like settings, but maybe you'd see some people with super-ships-like settings for a few seconds, to show the... flexibility/variety in this game. And to show that variety, you need to show very different settings, like TW vs anything super-ships-like. But yeah... > 100 people raping each other in the same arena = win Quote
whalz Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 if you guys want a dog fighting arena, use devastation... its dogfighting setting are WAY more exciting / intense than tw.. if you dont belive me, get a few of your friends and go to .?go dew [in ssca devastation]... or perhaps arrange for mulltiple cross zone addvertisments to all rally in one spot [pre determined and in an arena suitible for dogfighting / filming purposes].. hope for turn out [this would be advertised ssc wide for a week obviously to get partisipation] then jus get like 10 different zones , fraap it for like 20minutes, and go the next zone, ext.. complie vid with awesome music some text shit and whatever jazz ... would be best viddeo ever... would get subspace together, and show people why subspace is awesome [people together havin fun killin each other showing that all ships equal, you still gota have skill to kill the next person] ^latest night idea so far HAH Quote
»Lynx Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Samas point on a variation of settings is a very good one. Perhaps if we use asss to host this we'll be able to easily switch every bodies settings (maybe a few 5-10 minute games). Quote
aquarius Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 that would be cool we could actually use different maps as well, just ?recyclearena and have people play a few different versions of subspace settings/map for the length of the event and then chop it up in a video editor. is there a way to export ?gamerecord..? i imagine that would be the best quality. although it seems to me like it just records/repeats game actions, and never actually records a video Quote
Samapico Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 Perhaps it could be possible to playback at a slower speed, with all speed settings slower as well, record it, and increase the video speed after, so you get a higher framerate capture Quote
