Hello TestTube,

We humbly apologize for leading such activity which has inevitably brought your hosting resources to its knees. We further apologize and admit that in the way the download was conducted was unethical and wrong. L Y N X and Cre have nothing to be blamed for because their acts were merely a continuation of my original desires and objectives. I realize our lack of participation in this controversy has further caused damage and grief, and we apologize for this too. We are sorry - I am sorry.

We respect your privacy, resources, worth, and services to this community and in no way wish to undo great charity. The last thing we want to do is make enemies. BlueToast's original purpose in this community is to be independent and partitioned from politics and nonsense, and I believe that we have unfortunately crossed this line through childish, stupid and immature acts.

I would ask for everyone's forgiveness to L Y N X and Cre, as they are not the responsible party. It is my fault, and without furtherado I (BlueToast) formally resign current and future activities within this community with the exception of BlueT hosting services through Isometry.

This is my doing, and I have caused enough damage and nuessence to this community. I am done.

In humility and embarrassment,

Joshua Szanto (BlueToast CEO & President)

EDIT (12/3/2009): Applied strikethrough.

Just to clear up Testtube and I have sorted things out privately. For the sake of my own credit, I am only holding back the Python scripts so it takes more than any kid to come in and effectively DDOS/DOS any site they like. Although the download function on the script did wait to complete for a move-on, the assessment was that because 30% of the database consisted of approximately 1300 of the files, and there was no wait timer on the script too many PHP requests were made in a very short amount of time. Ultimately, it's a shame that things had to turn out like this, and it's a shame that L.C. is quitting over something that will probably be forgotten about in a few months. Oh well, I guess that's how Subspace goes. Maybe L.C. will rethink this decision.

Peace,

I just don't get why you didn't just download all the files pertanent and useful to the game 1 by 1. This was all I never understood... or even just download everything 1 by 1, rather than risk bombarding a server like what happened here.

Personally I don't think its worth quiting over, maybe just rethinking future actions.

I personally think everyone needs to CHILL THE FUCK OUT.

Its not a big deal, a mistake was made and the situation has been sorted out, theres no need for anyone to quit at all...these things happen...

Yet you informed me that I have 7 days to collect the zones files cause you were/are going to take it down.

lezarwerks: You have 7 days to backup your zone content.

me: Why?

9:56 PM Please respond.

10:00 PM lezarwerks: BlueToast will no longer offering zone hosting for undisclosed reasons. This is final.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you.

This wasn't some malicious attack, it's even been said it wasn't by everyone by those who created it, and those on the other end.

What they wanted was a simplistic way of getting the content using s script. They didn't want to sit there and go page by page.

They have apologized, and the feeling is that it was accepted, and for it to not happen again.

What is unacceptable is to now have L.C. leave the community because of what? guilt? self punishment? remorse?

LC and co. you don't give up on life because you made a mistake, you learn and go on with it.

Leaving the community is the inappropriate way of handling this to what you may call a resolution.

Wipe those tears, lets go on boys.

My reaction to the first post was "Great, now everyone can have all these files locally." So I decided to get started with making little sub-archives of maps, tiles, repels, bullets, ect.. When I tried to download them I was disappointed that A) The files have been taken down. :D That there's been such an argument about it and C) That legal threats were made concerning files that were authored by hundreds of people.

I'll leave it up to those who know me to understand where I stand on this issue, as this thread is obviously not the place for constructive communication.

I will suggest this: (and this is just off the top of my head) A torrent file containing all the content of SSDL should be on the SSDL site. This way it's not hosted on the server and the downloaders can actually check/uncheck what they do/don't want to download.

team A builds script, downloads all files from ssdl. ssdl server goes down 3 hours. bandwidth go boom. team B gets mad. A & B falconpunch each other. team A loses, runs away. team C says chillax. team A comes back. everyone happy happy.

Lol, team A loses? I think the assessment was more-so a dead horse was done getting beaten. This could have been easily avoided by better communication, and better planning on each side.

Edit:

I think a torrent file wouldn't work, I can't see enough people seeding for it but perhaps I could be wrong.

Its easy you setup a server as a permament seeder. I'd be happy to do this..

Mhmm, true. I've got a RapidShare acct. I can upload the files to, too. I don't know if L.C. still has them, though. I also don't know whether the files include any files that belong to TT, he'd need to clear that up.

So this doesnt have anything to do with the SubSpace Public Library?

Nope. I didn't think anyone used that zone, so I "turned it off." I also found out about some Subgame2 bugs that could let a user who has ownership over a subarena take over the zone.

It was a very basic summary. In the end, the files were removed and the members of team A split in three different directions which reflected each of their personal views on the matter, while team B remained status quo. No matter how it's worded it'll remain subjective.

And you laugh that it could have been avoided with better communication, yet you are the ones who opted not to go down this path. I'm not really sure how either team could have 'better planned' the situation, it wasn't even planned in the first place, it was just done. This is kind of redundant with the entire thread discussed already.

How is the torrenting going to work if you don't have all the files? It would be respectful not to use SSDLBackup.zip (if you still have it), as Testtube wanted to package it himself this weekend to make sure it doesn't contain material that he doesn't want in there. Unfortunately I have told him already, through my overreactive hastey forfeit drama, not to put together the ZIP archive. I have messaged him a few times, but I don't want to overdo the messaging...as I am not getting any responses back.

You haven't fallen down the stairs just yet. Wait for him to say if he will or not, you never know. Just be patient.

You should really improve the sequential file id stuff, there is a firefox extension which does the exact same thing as that script, takes like 10 seconds to set up. Edited by JoWie

The problem wasn't the sequential id's... it was downloading each file with a connection, which kind of killed the server.
