Keep the bans, start advertising. Even if a entire zone (excluding staff) were to riot to unban everyone, council will still not do so.
Bans have been purged by the council before.

A little off topic: You guys are talking about the council like this is star wars, isn't the council suppose to help gain people, deal with their problems, and help things run smoothly? I say just do it for one day, send some bulk mail out and tell everyone that's on this forum that who ever has been banned will be unbanned on one day. Only one day, if it works out and we don't have any problems then have a 'meeting' with the 'head' people of this community to see if we should keep everyone unbanned. Edited by Acer

The idea isn't supposed to be here to retain cheaters. I think the worst thing we can do is let the people who fuck up the game know that the game is free to fuck up again. Maybe just convert everything into name-bans would be an option, to be honest... I'd be sceptical of any.

do it. whats the worst that can happen?

A: you will have to wave the ban stick again. Lets face it, it was fun the first time, it will be fun this time too.

You are confused. The empire was a dictatorship with a distinctive leader with a Visionâ„¢.

The SSCouncil is a bureaucracy-ridden stagnant body of corrupt republicans that couldn't agree on whether or not to take a piss much less pick a pot to piss in.

A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows public opinion

Wrong. A wise man acknowledges that his decisions are formed by the opinions he was driven to via the illuminati's tools of world order. An ignorant man believes his opinions come from free will and cognitive thought.

Heh heh heh, I see what you did there.

If it were to be the decision that these bans should be lifted, then there is something wrong the ban policy. The ban represents a label of one who has been deemed to have unacceptable behavior, and must be removed (for a period of time directly related to the scale of the offense.) If these people are supposedly not worthy of being removed for so long, then the ban policy is a farce and should also be changed.

Honestly though, I have a gut feeling that the ratio of people quietly serving their bans to the rest (evading, quitting altogether, or even sometimes getting a banfree in a friendly zone) is not as high as many would like to believe.

Avoiding a ban +1

seriously.. kilo i think is right, if all bans are lifted then the way/ reasons people get banned should also be changed

i dont think anything OTHer than hacking should end in a ban, or unpluging during a duel.

I just think that you should be banned when you're bending any functionality of the game. This should include avoiding ignore (no pun intended) - and I don't think anybody gets banned for anything other than that. I still think that a year is too long of a ban, though - considering how shit our ban system is.
Posted
Ask yourself this, if you were banned, would you even bother giving a shit about the game in the first place let alone want to come back a second time and not commit the same offenses?
Posted
On top of that, the longest ban should reflect on how long it takes the average user to bypass the ban. I can honestly understand a name-ban lasting hundreds of days... But any other ban type lasting longer than a month seems completely pointless.
Posted
Why on earth would evasion be a factor in ban length? The time they should be gone is the time they should be gone, not the time "the average user" will be gone. If lots of people are evading bans and it's causing people to only get caught in old ones, then perhaps evaluate if bans really should be that long.
Posted
Evasion should definitely be a factor, let's face it a 12 month ban is completely pointless if you can evade the ban easily - the 12 month ban just leaves a bigger net for others to get caught in.

I've gotta say, lifting all bans could help this game a ton but also do more harm. It's kinda like playing russian roulette and your pointing the gun at Continuum, let's say each bullet is a cheater unbanned, Start pullin that trigger and pray.

While you have a good worry, Synister, as I too had the same worry (see my first reply to this thread), I think less and less that this would actually be a problem.

If you took a count of all the bans as a result of hacking and cheating, how many of them actually still play (based on gut feeling)? Same question (but based on what you would do if you were banned for cheating for 12+ months)?

If I got banned for cheating, I would either (in any combination)...

1) Leave the game, having taken out my wrath and ultimate displeasures upon the game

2) Leave the game, assuming I don't have multiple IP addresses

3) Patiently wait for my ban to expire and resume as a normal, innocent player

4) Patiently wait for my ban to expire to cheat again

If you get banned for 12+ months, what are you going to do? A lot of stuff happens within a year, which could ultimately change everything.

Why not just hire a few extra BanG operators and send out alerts to all zone operators? I really think all bans should be purged. Nothing ventured is nothing gained.

> 1 year bans should really be reserved for extreme offenses... script-kiddy-CE hacks are not included in this category.

I agree, and to be honest I think that if any ban is going to be even near one year, it should only be a name ban. I'd be pissed that I lost out on my alias, but I am 100% certain I'd be back on SS within an hour anyway. The only decent way (which is also the worst way) I've seen of bans actually working is banning entire IP ranges - which still leads in people evading anyway.

of course really, the majority of people who used to play left of their own will... maybe people who wernt banned only left cus someone else got banned or something. really ban lifting everything can only chain react in a good way if it will do anything at all. hardly something to consider as hurting subspace.

If it will do anything at all unbaning everyone will do no negative and only positive, since you can always ban um' again^ like im sure someone said before me.

of course really, who cares about the banned people.. really.. who cares about anything in this game LOL... until its on a custom handheld unit designd for subspace and subspace only... i think this game is flat lining ..

Which was changed after the bang guidelines we're created and put in place. Very few are left from the old days, and the only new ones are the ones on Prime bypassing.
