Well since prof of concept has already been achieved, and a fixed is possible for the "not ssc" tag, then what "road blocks" (and that's to be used loosely) are there to make this... an implemented feature?

The problem is, it is not for the decision of a host to give another host access to SSC unless someone like Ghost says it is okay to give it to them. Its a moral issue.

 

Well that sounds easy to get around also. You stick this on trusted hosts, and perhaps GS keep a closer look on those SSC slots that are available?

 

Since this has already been done, you can't hold an agreement that they shouldn't ... when it could already be in use and we don't know about it.

The problem, Sketter, isnt just the addition of more zones to the SSC Server, it is the lack of updates/etc on the biller itself. As it stands now, anyone with a zone that has population can achieve SSC very very easily. All of these non-ssc zones are dead and therefore have no reason to get SSC. Trust me, I've been on both ends of trying to get population for a zone. Both with SSC and with Non-SSC. I contest that neither work when building a zone up from scratch. It simply must be a good zone, and you must have a LOT of friends, or have a friend with lots of friends. I even got Trench Wars to advertise Super Fortress, and we hit 30-40, but then people left.

Oh I completely understand the concept on a zone getting SSC, but that isn't what my post was focusing on.

 

I'm focused on the truth.(Well that's a side issue really)

 

There seems to be an issue when adding a host to ssc, and that it takes forever, and the excuse comes out that it takes moving the world to get a hold of priitk.

 

So what better way then to offer alternatives to adding credible hosts.

 

So, setting the zone access aside, (and since we have hit proof of concept) will this feature ever be adopted, so that hosts no longer need to wait on priitk?

I was asked to make mention of this (again?):

 

I have contacted council members (including Ghost Ship, whom I have also e-mailed) a few times within the last few months in attempt to get SSC authorization/access, and have never received a response or indication that they have read my messages. The only time I received a response was when I took aboard Trench Wars (DEV), in which both I and RiiStar pursued its SSC access.

 

When I sent messages out to the council members, all of them (including Ghost Ship) had read their private messages and I received at least two responses about the request being forwarded to the council chambers. Soon after -- a day or two -- I received notice from either one of the council members or from RiiStar (what he was told) that Priit said Trench Wars (DEV) does not need SSC because it is a DEV zone.

 

Also, this proxy idea would open doors to SSC for hosts like I (BlueT). A trusting SSC host of present time could host such program.

There seems to be some confusion. The idea of a proxy, a (bridged) biller, or a bridged layer as I worded it earlier are all essentially the same thing. The only difference between the proxy and the biller part is that the proxy wouldn't have an independant banning or user authentication system, and it would also lack the ability of collecting scores among other information. The proxy would also not seek to potentially be a replacement to the current biller.

 

But they all function on the same principle that an intermediate application would act as a relay between the SSC biller and zones connected via this proxy by using the zone<->biller UDP protocol. It's possible, and was accomplished, but issues arose that hindered its/their continued development and adoption.

A proxy is perfectly possible, but would probably not be supported. I tried this idea back in... 2002. Me and BD Vine actually had a small discussion on the subject. I was wanting to setup a secondary SSC Biller for zones not capable of being on a SSC allowed host. We had a biller capable of doing such, but BD Vine was very much so against it. But funny enough, being the head of the biller at the time, was very open to making it easier for hosts and zones to connect. And at the time, so was most the council.

 

The current council is made up of mostly elitist egotistical spoiled sysops who inherited the zone they run. Never built it from scratch and seen the work and effort it takes to get a zone populated and running. Sadly a few of the ones who do get it, are out numbered by inactivity, or the elitists, and so everyone suffers.

 

There is a reason I do not wish to rejoin the council, and why the current billing ops are not council members.

 

Ghost Ship will add SSC slots for SSC hosts very easily. I know he rarely asks the council for approval on that. But the council has to approve non-ssc hosts getting ssc access. And as for Dev zones, this was something decided by the council, not by Priit. I talked to Ghost about the situation when Pure_Luck asked about it, and told him and riistar both that Ghost would add it if it was on a current SSC host. But the council said no to them, so asking for a server to deal with SSC hosting of dev zones to be allowed on the biller wasn't gonna happen. So that is where that ended up.

 

All these ideas are great and all. But noone runs with them or fully finishes them. If someone actually had a completed Client, or a completed biller that worked with subgame and asss, and wouldn't mind sharing the source and helping continue the game, they'd have support.

 

Its like a zone, or a website. Noone cares if anyone else likes it, they just build it.

What exactly is keeping SSC together? What (or if it's a who) exactly still gives them authority? And are they productive enough, and beneficial to be a driven force in this community?

* Keeping it together? The database. The players would leave if they lost their aliases. Not all, but many. Zones know this.

* Ghost Ship still gives them authority. If they decide it, and its not WAAY outta bounds (rarely is) he does it.

* No, sadly they are not. There are a few on there (Hoch, MTN, Freakmonger) who are actively involved outside of their zone, but the rest are moslty on idle. I once had an idea of creating a central government for the game, something that controlled more than just the SSC Zones, as the SS Council is really merely now the SSC Council. But never went through with it.

 

* Yes, they must approve any server added to the SSC Biller. Cons are that the proxy can be used to intercept player information. I think I did a long time ago, I know as I said I discussed it with BD Vine, but dunno bout Ghost. I think he really didn't care as he did have knowledge of other servers/zones doing this.

I offered to make a new distributed billing framework for the SSC, but was basically told that it wouldn't get used. So it ended there for me.

 

* Though, it honestly could be put to use. There is no definate yes or no answer here. It is all on timing and what we have access to. Ghost still wants to replace the SSC Biller last we spoke about the idea of it. So to replace it, means we need something else fully functional.

Your SVS zone is never up when I check for it.

You're the only one that has reported that you are unable to connect or find it. :S The dedicated server is located in Dallas, Texas, if this means anything. I did a directory server run:

Bjorn's AI bots don't play very well if the map contains special/extra tiles (which it does). :(

I misunderstood the dev zone we we're talking about.

 

I thought this was about the TW ASSS dev zone, not the TW Dev Zone. Priit had previously told them they did not need SSC access for the zone. So of course this was the same answer. Also council essentially had begun going down the track of saying no to dev zones on SSC also. So this would have also been a council decision, not just a priit decision eventually.

TWDev (not ASSS) was something dealt with on May 17, 2009. This is 6.5 months ago...

Ok.

 

TW Dev requested it, this I did not know about. I asked about it, and it was said Priit had said no to TW Dev getting SSC a long time ago.

 

TW's ASSS Dev, Pure_Luck Requested it, but the only way it could be done was on a current SSC server as the council said no to dev zones. But during this time Chaos was also working on an asss Dev zone, and the plan was for both zones (seperately planned but they ended up with the same idea) to move their sub-arenas onto ASSS to begin working on them and getting them together. This was seperate from the question/decision by the council as that was nothing more than just plain dev zones. Not something that was the development of an extension of a current zone. So, TW Dev ASSS could be on SSC as long as it was on a current SSC host. As I said, Pure_Luck asked me about it, and I got the ok from Ghost as long as it was on a current SSC allowed server, as he didn't think he'd be able to get Priit to add ip to the firewall. Pure_Luck's web server wasn't ssc allowed anymore, so he couldn't do that. And that is where that ended with TW's ASSS Dev zone having SSC.

 

Again, as I said, I got the 2 zones confused.
