Developing with Source requires either a license, or if we can make it some kind of mod (somehow), the players would still have to own a source game...

And I don't think Source is a right engine either...

Possibly the Unreal 3 engine. It's been open source for a year or so now. I've seen a TON of non-fps games using udk. And, for all intents and purposes, it's relatively simple to program.

cyanyde has a def point. One of many problems is that when/if it does go open source, there's a high chance of turning a sort of dead game into a completely dead game with hacks targeted at vulnerabilities of the biller or whatever. Just saddens me to see my game go right down the toilet due to infighting with devs getting bent, taking their toys, and going home. 55 versions of the same client is great and all, but it doesn't help shit overall.

I know that's an old post, but whatever.

Being open source only means the code belongs to the community as a whole. There will be ways to allow only the official build on the servers. If 55 people make their own versions, they should instead commit the changes to the official build, which would get reviewed before being released as 'official', and there we go: 55 new features or bugs fixed, easy as pie. That doesn't stop someone from making its own wacky client, but that's just part of the fun, as long as the servers can detect them.

An open source client means we also need an open source server and biller. We already have ASSS for server, and several billers exist as well. Open source means you need extra precaution against hacks, but it also means you can answer quickly to a new hack, if the protection is broken.

fine. reviving an ultra dead topic.

don't go open. at least get everyone involved with making a CORE client. just one. one that works and is able to do all the stupid bullshit people want with addons or plugins or whatever. however, i know X-person is stuck in their ways of OH THIS PROGRAMING LANGUAGE IS BETTER or I CAN DO MORE WITH THIS HORSECOCK. one client with support, through addons, for the biller would be ideal.

but this is a gigantic pipe dream ten years too late. :D
