L.C. Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 (edited) seriously who gives a shit about dedicated servers.... whats so special?Rootbear, imagine if the server files for Subspace were never released. Now remember VIE pulling the plug on Subspace. What do you think would happen? In other words, if you remove dedicated servers from the picture, chances are there would be no Subspace today. By being able to run your own server, you have the freedom of will to configure, shape and run it to your likings. EDIT: If the developers of MW2 one day decided to finally pull the plug on their MW2 servers because the game was too old even though a small population of players continued to play the game, then playing MW2 would be no more. By allowing dedicated servers, the lifetime of the game is in the hands of the players and fans. Edited November 18, 2009 by L.C. Quote

Gravitron Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 Only so long the console owner company is still around (or even still supporting the old console). What if your console is Dreamcast? Also, Modern Warfare is a game published for both console and PC. Quote

There's a lot of old games that aren't supported on the 360 (Mostly arcade games) but they all allow you to make a private match with friends so there is really no point in having/needing dedicated servers. Even still: Matchmaking usually works fine... and those dont use dedicated servers either. It picks a host with the best connection of the people in the game. Quote
LiDDiS Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 (edited) seriously who gives a shit about dedicated servers.... whats so special? Are you fucking kidding? Just because you're too dumb to 'get' why they're so 'special' doesn't mean they're not important. I mean every FPS since like 1996-7 (quake) has had dedicated servers. Peer to peer games are archaic shit for FPS games. Dedicated server pros:-100% customizable. Servers can use mods, custom graphics/maps/sounds/mods/settings almost anything.-Free mods/maps/skins/models made by the community.-You join a server near your location. Lag free. Try telling me a peer to peer game is ANYWHERE near comparable to a 30ms ping 100 'tick server. -Due to lower lag you can support more players. MW1 supported 32 player games out of the box, and 64+ servers are common.-The so called 'cheers effect'. Being able to join a familiar server with familiar people and game settings. 'Where everyone knows your name!' Imagine how long SS would last if you just played with random people all the time. It's the same for any game.-Server admins. IF there's a hacker/douche he will be removed and you never have to worry about it. Some guy is being a douche or hacking in a peer-peer game? Tough shit! IW will catch and ban him, don't worry! (HA HA) Dedicated server cons:You may have a difficult time if you have a sub-80 IQ. Instead of asking 'why do PC gamers need dedicated servers' you should be asking 'why can't consoles support dedicated servers too?!' (they could but it would kind of obsolete XBOX LIVE so they wont) PS: In response to original post: I heard that there is already a team reverse engineering the new maps/models from MW2 into MW1 also. That would be hilarious. Edited November 19, 2009 by LiDDiS Quote
rootbear75 Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 That still doesnt change the fact that IF NO ONE'S ON THE SERVER THEN YOU CANT REALLY PLAY ANYWAYS. And yes I KNOW what dedicated servers are. I played on a bunch of them when Unreal Tournament came out (still do on occasion) It's just i never realized that people need to mod MW2.... i mean, what mods do you need? Quote
Samapico Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Mods are never a question of 'need' Quote
