NBVegita Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) Random thought... I find it funny that BDE now also owns Kazaa too...do they just love to eat up Priit's old work? Which isn't surprising being one of the guys(Kevin Bermeister) who co-founded altnet inc. also founded BDE, and the other altnet co-founder(Janus Friis) has also been a co-creator of Kazaa, Skype and Joost (with Priit and Niklas Zennström). Why that is convenient is that before Kazaa was sold to BDE, it partnered with Altnet inc to try and charge users for use of Kazaa (to make it more legit). BTW Altnet inc. is a division of BDE. Just thought I'd post this funny little circle of online love. Edited November 13, 2009 by NBVegita Quote
Hakaku Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 This seems oddly familiar, almost déjà vu. I'm surprised no one here brought up RapidShare. Here's the thread for historical reference - oh wait, it was this year: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=22995&st=0 Quote
Gravitron Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) Lynx, like I told the other guy, if you're okay with scamming people for personal gain (whichever it may be in whatever form it may be) then you are that. This is the source, reason and logic for my opinion.I believe you'd find that it is one that is shared by a vast majority of, both the intellectual and least-intellectual, population. Vegita, this is really all old news. They also had an attempt with Altnet to use that Silverplatter (formerly Horizon) company's Alloy (formerly DEx) peer2peer technology, making a Subspace clone over peering as proof of concept.Supposedly they were to showcase it in some industry event. Now the Rapidshare thing is a new one to me. Certainly, they may have wanted control and it seems like it, but I think that overall they could've been the resource-giant we've been lacking all along.Shrug. Hey, Polix, can I get that guy's email? Maybe he could help me realize my Uber-SS/INF cross MMO dream design. XD Hm..I am just now seeing this, and it is intriguing... Has anyone explainedto them that no Pay to Pay subspace version has ever worked? If it didnt work for *SONY*, it wont work for rapidshare. Sony is waaayy bigger then rapidshare will ever be.Aside the glaring type'Oh, he's also made a huge mistake.Infantry/Cosmic Rift aren't operated by Sony, per-sa, they're operated by SOE which is a, rather small comparatively, division within a division that is within (or was at the time) Sony's Motion Picture division. They also haven't allocated the games any significant resources, so you can't say they've done much for it. Rapidshare could've easily advertised SS up the wahzoo.Seems like a loss. Mais, meh... Wow...so much retarded bollocks inside that thread...this is bad comedy. Oh, and ultimately, anyway, they wouldn't have gone through with it even if we agreed to it because BDE wants a six figure (no...that's not 100k, you're missing a zero there) and no way rapidshare-guy would've paid that much. Heck, I doubt he'd have paid more than a couple thousands at best, he probably thought he could get it for that low a sum, too). Edited November 13, 2009 by Ori Klein Quote
PoLiX Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 Wow, I goto to work and the hell that begins... 1. Stop jacking my fucking thread. Keep your Gamersgate thing in its own thread, thnx.2. Before you go get in over your head and I have to dig someone out of another hole (2nd time this year even), please slow down. I only wanted to contact BDE to see what they could do for us with getting in contact with priit, and what limitations they hold on us with advertising, spreading the game, etc. And see what their opinion of Novaleaf's SubSpace is. I will tell you that they will agree to anything that makes them money off of us. But the problem with this whole Gamersgate idea... When people realize they paid $5 for something they could get for free (and probably download at a higher speed) from us directly, there is going to be some issues. The best thing for advertising we could do is anything we do not profit from, and anything with the big websites. I have recently e-mailed 2 mmo websites about advertising and got some interesting, though conflicting answers from them. 1 E-mailed me 2x with different prices, so trying to see wtf is up there. The problem is people getting too deeply involved with these companies, and feeding them false info. So once I sit down and give them how it is, they either don't reply, or get all angry asking why we wasted their time. IE: Once I made it very blatent to Rapidshare profit was not an option, they stopped communications. I give you full props for trying, but it will end in a big mess. Grav I'll ICQ you the e-mail later. Quote

Sorry, I thought your thread about contacting BDE was a good place to post that I'd contacted BDE And dont worry, i'm not making any moves P.S. Why is this notion of having the client available at cost such a big deal? Cant the consumer be expected to understand that for the exposure there is a cost associated with having the client hosted on DDS Sites... I still dont see such a huge deal with that... The consumer will say "Why did i pay $5 for something that is free elsewhere?" And we will say "Talk to the people that charged you" They'll go to the DDS site and say "Why did i pay money for something thats free elsewhere" and the DDS site will say "Because there is a cost associated with bringing the content to you whereas other organizations will cover that cost themselves" EDIT: OK ok i give... there's too much ugly competing interests involved with having the client hosted at cost - but i think we can achieve the same results with a similar setup. I mean.. having the client hosted for free on these sites seems like the best way to go... of course we'd have to pay them to do that, but ive got $1000 i can put towards that if anyone wants to help out.... EDIT2: Sorry... im hijacking your thread again ... *shoots self* Edited November 14, 2009 by TurboSlug22 Quote
Testtube Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 I hate how this place threatens people with closing threads. I mean this is a fucking message board. People are here to talk leave the freaking threads alone so much fucking censorship Quote
PoLiX Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 Meh, my mods know not to close them unless they really get outta hand. Threats just normally work with most the members here. And turbo its fine, really. Its sometimes hard to catch my sarcasm. Quote

So long no one is making a profit out of their ©s without their consent (cut) then no problem whatever we do. That's, IIRC, how the verbal agreement between their heads and Priit was communicated. Once I made it very blatent to Rapidshare profit was not an option, they stopped communications. We could probably allow them to exploit the built-in Ad Banner thing/LVZs, or put some banners on our community websites. This will be in return for their hosting costs and whatever further (dev team?) support they were willing to invest onto. I give you full props for trying, but it will end in a big mess.Probably, but what a rush/ride it'll be, huh? XD Quote

The consumer will say "Why did i pay $5 for something that is free elsewhere?" And we will say "Talk to the people that charged you"Because you are knowingly and willingly assist a rip-off and then divert any responsibility claiming to partake no part in it. This is about as immoral as unethical gets.I'd really love to have Hoch down here and explain it from his side of the practice.I don't know how the US Law works, but here we have an article called "(Acting) In Good Faith" and once you breach it, you're owing damages. That is to say that intentionally giving someone a poor deal or one that bust in their face well knowing it's what's going to happen will land you guilty as charged in any lawsuit. If you are footing the advertising/exposure bill, it is one thing. For another to do so, while the product is offered freely as is, would be downright jackassery. Quote
Gravitron Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 He asked. I answered. I cannot imbue conscience onto him, but I can explain why what he's doing is perceived by society as wrong. Quote
